The Golden Echoes

The rain hit the roof of the cart. It sounded like knuckles. I sat in the back. My wife, Elara, sat in the front. She did not look back. We were going to the highlands. We were going to the castle. We were going to die. Or so it seemed. I held my hand. It was cold. The skin was tight. The veins were blue. I looked at it. I saw the future. I saw the end. I was a scholar. I wrote books. I knew history. I knew how men fell. I did not know how I would fall. Not yet. The cart moved. The wheels spun. The mud was deep.

Elara spoke. Her voice was thin. It cut the air.

"Stop staring," she said.

I looked away. I looked at the trees. They were bare. They were black. They stood like judges.

"I am not staring," I said.

"You are," she said. "You are always staring."

She knew. She always knew. I was the man who thought too much. I was the man who trusted the wrong things. I trusted my mind. I trusted my words. I trusted the King. I should not have. The King was a wolf. He wore a crown. He sat on a throne. He ate the poor. He ate the weak. He ate the truth. I had written a letter. I had sent it. I thought I was brave. I was a fool.

The cart stopped. We were at the gate. The gate was stone. It was tall. It was old. It had seen many things. It had seen wars. It had seen plagues. It had seen love. It had seen betrayal. A guard stood there. He had a sword. He had a face like a stone. He looked at me. He looked at Elara. He did not smile.

"Who are you?" he asked.

I stepped out. My legs were stiff. My back hurt. I was fifty years old. I felt old. I felt tired. I felt afraid.

"I am Arthur," I said. "This is my wife."

The guard looked at Elara. He looked at my hand. He looked at my face. He knew. He did not say it. He did not need to. He knew what I was. He knew what I had done. He knew what the King wanted.

"Come in," he said.

We went in. The castle was dark. The corridors were long. The walls were cold. The torches flickered. The shadows moved. The shadows whispered. I held Elara’s hand. I held it tight. I was afraid she would leave. I was afraid she would hate me. I was afraid I had broken her.

We walked. We walked for an hour. We walked for two hours. The castle was a maze. It was a beast. It breathed. It lived. It wanted to swallow us. We reached the throne room. The room was large. The floor was marble. The air was still. The King sat on the throne. He was small. He was fat. He was red. He looked like a piece of meat. He looked like a child. He was not a man. He was a thing.

He spoke. His voice was high. It was shrill. It was ugly.

"Arthur," he said. "You are here."

"I am here, Your Majesty," I said.

"Did you write the letter?" he asked.

"Yes," I said.

"Did you send it?" he asked.

"Yes," I said.

He laughed. The laugh was dry. It was like a crack. It was like a bone breaking.

"You are a fool," he said. "You think words are power. You think ink is blood. You are wrong. Words are nothing. Power is iron. Power is fire. Power is me."

I looked at Elara. She stood by the door. She did not move. She did not speak. She looked at the King. She looked at me. Her eyes were dark. Her eyes were deep. I could not read them. I could not see the bottom. I saw only the surface. I saw only the fear. I thought she was afraid of me. I thought she was ashamed of me. I thought I had ruined her life. I thought I had dragged her into the mud. I thought I had killed her.

"I did it for the people," I said. My voice was low. My voice was steady. I was proud. I was sure. I was wrong.

"For the people?" the King said. "The people do not care. The people eat. The people sleep. The people die. They do not read. They do not think. They do not care about your books. They care about their bellies. They care about their skins. They care about their lives. You took their lives. You gave them fear. You gave them pain. You are a monster."

I looked at Elara. She turned. She walked to me. She stopped. She looked up. She was close. I could smell her hair. It smelled of lavender. It smelled of home. It smelled of safety.

"Elara," I said. "I am sorry. I should not have gone. I should have listened. I am sorry."

She looked at me. She smiled. It was not a happy smile. It was a sad smile. It was a kind smile.

"You are not a monster," she said.

The King looked up. He looked at us. He looked confused. He looked angry. He stood up. He was small. He was short. He looked tiny. He looked weak.

"Silence," he said. "Both of you. Silence."

He pointed at me. He pointed his finger. The finger was red. The finger was fat.

"Take him," he said. "Take him to the tower. Keep him there. Do not let him speak. Do not let him write. Do not let him think. Let him rot. Let him die. Slowly. Painfully. That is what he deserves."

The guards moved. They came for me. They grabbed my arms. They were strong. They were cold. They pulled me. I did not fight. I did not struggle. I let them pull me. I let them take me. I looked at Elara. She stood there. She did not move. She did not cry. She did not scream. She stood still. She watched me go. She watched me leave. She watched me die.

I was in the tower. The tower was dark. The tower was cold. The stone was damp. The air was wet. I sat on the floor. I sat in the corner. I pulled my knees to my chest. I closed my eyes. I waited. I waited for the pain. I waited for the end. I waited for the truth.

Time passed. Hours. Days. I did not know. I did not count. I did not care. I was alone. I was lost. I was empty. I was nothing.

Then I heard it. A sound. A soft sound. A whisper. I opened my eyes. The light was thin. The light was gray. The light was old. I saw a figure. It was small. It was thin. It was pale. It was Elara.

She was at the door. The door was open. She was holding a lantern. The light was yellow. The light was warm. She walked in. She walked slowly. She walked carefully. She came to me. She knelt down. She knelt in the dirt. She knelt in the cold.

"Arthur," she said.

I looked at her. I did not speak. I could not speak. My throat was tight. My heart was heavy.

"I am here," she said.

"Why?" I asked. My voice was a rasp. My voice was a whisper.

"Because I love you," she said.

I looked at her. I looked at her face. I saw the lines. I saw the shadows. I saw the fear. I saw the strength. I saw the truth. I saw it then. I saw it clearly. I had been wrong. I had been blind. I had been proud. I had been a fool. I thought she was weak. I thought she was afraid. I thought she was ashamed. I was wrong. She was strong. She was brave. She was the only one who was real. The King was a ghost. The castle was a lie. The world was a dream. Only she was real. Only her love was real.

I reached out. I took her hand. Her hand was cold. Her hand was rough. Her hand was real. I held it. I held it tight. I held it like a lifeline. I held it like a prayer.

"I am sorry," I said. "I am so sorry."

She shook her head. She shook it slowly. She shook it gently.

"Do not be sorry," she said. "Be here. Be now. Be with me."

I looked at her. I looked into her eyes. I saw the light. I saw the fire. I saw the life. I saw the echo. It was not a golden echo. It was a silver echo. It was a quiet echo. It was a true echo.

The guards came. They came with swords. They came with anger. They came with hate. They kicked the door. They came in. They saw us. They saw her. They saw me. They saw the hand.

"Get up," the guard said. "Get up, you traitor."

I stood up. I held Elara’s hand. I did not let go. I did not move. I did not speak. I looked at the guard. I looked at the King’s shadow. I looked at the wall. I saw the stone. I saw the cracks. I saw the age. I saw the time.

"I am not a traitor," I said.

"Get up!" the guard shouted.

I stood. I stood tall. I stood straight. I stood proud. I was not afraid. I was not angry. I was calm. I was clear. I was free.

The guard hit me. He hit me in the face. I felt the pain. I felt the blood. I tasted the iron. I did not fall. I did not cry. I did not beg. I stood. I stood with Elara. I stood with her hand. I stood with her love.

They took us. They took us to the yard. The yard was stone. The yard was cold. The sky was gray. The sky was low. The sky was heavy. The King was on the balcony. The King was in a robe. The King was in a crown. The King was in power.

He spoke. His voice was loud. His voice was clear. His voice was final.

"Cut his tongue," he said. "Cut her eyes. Leave them in the street. Let them rot. Let them see. Let them feel. Let them know. Let them fear."

The guards moved. They moved to me. They moved to Elara. They held us. They held us down. They held us tight. I felt the pain. I felt the cold. I felt the end.

I looked at Elara. She looked at me. She did not close her eyes. She did not turn away. She looked at me. She smiled. She smiled again. It was the same smile. It was the sad smile. It was the kind smile.

"I am here," she said.

I smiled back. I smiled with my eyes. I smiled with my heart. I smiled with my soul.

"I am here," I said.

The blade came. The blade was cold. The blade was sharp. The blade was real.

It cut.

The pain was white. The pain was hot. The pain was bright. The pain was everything. The pain was nothing.

I looked at the sky. The sky was gray. The sky was still. The sky was quiet. The sky was waiting.

I looked at Elara. Her face was white. Her face was still. Her face was quiet. Her face was waiting.

I did not feel the pain. I did not feel the blood. I did not feel the end. I felt the love. I felt the truth. I felt the echo.

The echo was not golden. It was not loud. It was not bright. It was soft. It was deep. It was true.

It was the only thing that mattered.

It was the only thing that remained.

It was us.
