The Wistful Crossroads
You wake in the static. It is not silence. It is a hum, low and thick, like the vibration of a cello string plucked in a room full of dust. You are standing in a field of gray reeds. They do not rustle. They stand rigid, pointing at a sky the color of old bruise. There is no sun. There is only a diffuse, pale light that comes from everywhere and nowhere. You know where you are. You know who you are. You are here because you left.
A figure stands ten paces away. He wears a coat that is too heavy for the air. His back is to you. You know the shape of his shoulders. You know the slight hunch in his spine. It is Elias.
"Hello," he says. He does not turn around.
"Elias," you say. Your voice sounds foreign in your mouth. Dry. Cracked.
"You are late," he says.
"I was not supposed to come here."
"Everyone comes here. Eventually."
You take a step forward. The reeds do not move. They are not plants. They are made of something else. Glass, perhaps. Or bone. They catch the gray light and hold it. You look down at your hands. They are young. They are smooth. You remember them being old, spotted with age, trembling when you reached for a cup of tea. Here, they are the hands of a man in his thirties. The hands you had when you left your country. The hands you had when you left him.
"Did you bring the map?" he asks.
"I left it in the car," you say. The lie is easy. It is the first thing you have said that feels real.
Elias turns. His face is familiar. It is the face you see in the mirror every morning. But it is sharper. Harder. The lines around his eyes are deep channels. He looks at you with a pity that makes your stomach turn.
"You always lie," he says. "It is your habit. It is your curse."
"I am not you," you say.
"Are you not?"
He takes a step closer. The distance between you shrinks. You feel a pull. A magnetic drag. It is not just in your body. It is in the air. The gray light seems to thicken around your neck.
"We are the same," he says. "We are the loop. We are the wheel."
"I am free," you say. Your voice shakes. "I left. I crossed the border. I built a new life. I married Sarah. I had the house in the suburbs. I was happy."
"Sarah," he says. The name hangs in the air. It sounds like a key turning in a lock. "You did not marry Sarah. You married the memory of her. You married the idea of leaving."
"That is not true."
"Look at your hands again."
You look down. They are still young. But there is a ring on your finger. A simple band. You did not put it there. You do not remember putting it there. You know who gave it to you. You know the weight of it. It is gold. It is warm.
"She is not here," you say.
"No one is here," Elias says. "Only us."
He raises his hand. He points at the horizon. The reeds end in a line of dark trees. Beyond the trees, there is a house. You know that house. It is the house in the suburbs. The one with the white picket fence and the oak tree in the front yard. It sits in the gray field like a toy. Like a lie.
"That is our home," you say.
"That is our prison," he says.
"Let me go," you say. "Let me go to her."
"Go," he says.
You turn. You run. The reeds do not part. They do not bend. You crash through them. They cut your arms. They do not bleed. There is no blood. There is only the gray light. You run until your lungs burn. You run until your legs give out. You fall. You are on your knees. The ground is hard. It is cold.
You look up. Elias is standing there. He is not ten paces away. He is right in front of you. He is holding your chin. His grip is firm.
"You cannot run from yourself," he says.
"I am not you," you say again. It is a mantra. It is a shield.
"Who else would you be?"
"I am the one who left," you say. "I am the one who chose the new life. I am the one who forgave you."
"Forgave me?" He laughs. It is a short, dry sound. "You did not forgive me. You erased me. You built a world where I did not exist. You built a world where the past did not hurt. But the past is a stone in your pocket. It is always there."
He lets go of your chin. He steps back.
"The house," he says. "It is waiting."
You stand up. Your legs are steady. The pain in your arms is gone. You look at the house again. It is closer now. You can see the light in the windows. It is warm. It is yellow. It is the only color in this gray world.
You walk toward it. You do not run. You walk. Your steps are slow. Deliberate. You are not afraid. You are tired. You are so tired of running. You are so tired of the lie.
You reach the front door. It is white. It is painted. The paint is peeling. You know the spot where the paint chips off. You know because you painted it yourself. You painted it on a Sunday. You were happy. You were so happy you forgot to eat.
You open the door.
Inside, it is warm. The smell of coffee is in the air. The smell of bread. The smell of her hair. You are in the kitchen. She is at the table. She is reading a book. She does not look up.
"Hello," she says. Her voice is soft.
"Hello," you say.
You sit down. The chair is solid. The table is solid. You reach for the coffee cup. Your hand does not tremble. You drink. It is hot. It is bitter. It is real.
"Did you have a good trip?" she asks.
"I was in a field," you say. "There were reeds. And a man."
"Which man?"
"Elias."
She closes her book. She looks at you. Her eyes are dark. They are deep. They are full of a sadness that you have never seen before.
"You met him," she says. It is not a question.
"He told me I am him," you say.
"He is right," she says.
The room changes. The light shifts. The walls of the kitchen fade. The table disappears. The book disappears. You are standing in the field again. The reeds are around you. The sky is gray.
Elias is standing there. He is not smiling. He is not frowning. He is just looking at you.
"You see it now," he says.
"I see nothing," you say. "I see a lie."
"You see the truth," he says. "There is no Sarah. There is no house. There is only the loop. You left because you could not live with the guilt. You built a fantasy to escape the pain. But the pain is you. The pain is the core. You cannot escape it. You can only carry it."
"Then why am I here?" you ask.
"Because you are ready," he says.
"Ready for what?"
"To stop running."
He extends his hand. It is an open hand. It is not a threat. It is an invitation.
"If you take my hand," he says, "you will accept it. You will accept that you are the one who broke us. You will accept that you are the one who is alone. You will accept the weight. And the wheel will stop."
You look at his hand. You look at the gray reeds. You look at the sky. You remember the coffee. You remember the warmth. You remember the lie.
You do not take his hand.
"No," you say.
Elias blinks. He looks surprised.
"Think about it," he says. "The weight is heavy. It will crush you."
"I know," you say.
"The fantasy is light. It is easy. You can go back. You can keep the house. You can keep her. You can keep the lie."
"I know," you say.
"Which do you choose?"
You close your eyes. You feel the cold. You feel the wind. You feel the hum of the static. You feel the ring on your finger. It is heavy. It is gold. It is real.
"I choose the truth," you say.
Elias nods. He does not smile. He steps forward. He takes your hand. His grip is warm. It is solid.
"You will suffer," he says.
"I know," you say.
"You will be alone," he says.
"I know," you say.
"You will never forgive yourself," he says.
"I know," you say.
He pulls you. The gray world dissolves. The reeds break apart. The sky cracks. Light floods in. It is not gray. It is white. It is blinding. It is the light of a new day.
You are standing in a room. It is small. It is empty. There is a window. It is night outside. You are holding a ring. It is gold. It is warm.
You put the ring in your pocket.
You walk to the door. You open it.
You step out into the street. The air is cold. It is crisp. It smells of rain. It smells of life.
You begin to walk. You do not know where you are going. You do not know who you are. You are alone. You are free.
The wheel stops.
