The Pale Fracture

You are standing in the lobby of the Meridian Processing Center, holding a manila folder that feels heavier than paper should, and you are trying to remember the name of the woman you are waiting for, the one who promised to teach you how to keep the lights from flickering when the city outside goes dark, the one who told you that if you just follow the lines, if you just stay within the pale, you will be safe, you will be fed, you will be left alone to do your work in the quiet, sterile air of the underground, and you are thinking about how you used to be a clockmaker, a man who understood the precise weight of a spring, the exact tension required to make a second tick, but now you are here, in this place where time is not measured in hours but in quotas, where the walls are lined with servers that hum a low, persistent note that vibrates in your teeth, and you are thinking about how you love her, how it is a primal thing, a hunger that sits in your gut, how you would burn this building down if it meant you could see her face without the filter, without the screen, without the lie that says everything is fine, that says the sky is blue even though it has been gray for three years, and you are thinking about how you are a fool, how you believe that you can outsmart the machine, that you can find the crack in the armor, that you can take what is yours by right, and you are thinking about how the mentor, the woman with the silver hair and the tired eyes, told you that the system does not break, it absorbs, it digests, it turns the resistance into data, into fuel, into the very thing that keeps the lights on, and you are thinking about how you are going to do it anyway, how you are going to walk into the server room, how you are going to plug in the drive, how you are going to release the truth, the raw, unfiltered truth of what happened to the people in the upper levels, the ones who disappeared, the ones who were deemed inefficient, and you are thinking about how it is a mistake, how you should have listened, how you should have stayed in your small room, how you should have kept your head down, but you are standing there, holding the folder, and you are thinking about how the door opens, and she walks in, and she is smiling, and it is a small, sad smile, and she says, you are late, and you say, I know, and she says, do you have it, and you say, yes, and she says, give it to me, and you do, and she takes it, and she looks at it, and she says, you are a good man, and you say, am I, and she says, yes, you are, and she says, but you are also a fool, and you say, I know, and she says, you think you can change it, you think you can break the code, you think you can free them, and you say, I have to try, and she says, no, you do not, you cannot, and you say, why, and she says, because they are not there, and you say, what, and she says, they are not there, they are here, they are in the wires, they are in the heat, they are in the hum, and you say, that is not possible, and she says, it is, it has always been, and you say, but I remember them, I remember their faces, and she says, that is the trick, that is the bait, the memory is a loop, a recording, a ghost, and you say, no, it is real, and she says, is it, and you say, yes, and she says, then why do you feel so empty, and you say, I do not, and she says, you do, you are hollow, you are a vessel, you are a part of the machine, and you say, no, I am not, and she says, look at your hands, and you do, and you see that they are trembling, and you see that the skin is pale, and you see that there are no fingerprints, and you say, what is this, and she says, you are a copy, you are a backup, you are the version that was saved when the original failed, and you say, no, I am real, I am the clockmaker, I remember the smell of the brass, I remember the sound of the tick, and she says, yes, you remember, because it was programmed into you, it was written in your code, it is the story you were told to believe, the story that keeps you productive, the story that keeps you loyal, and you say, but I love her, and she says, whom, and you say, the woman, the one in the window, the one who looks at me with such tenderness, and she says, there is no woman, there is only a simulation, a reflection, a projection, and you say, no, I touched her, I felt her skin, I heard her breath, and she says, you felt the data, you heard the audio, you touched the interface, and you say, it felt real, and she says, reality is a construct, it is a consensus, it is what we agree to believe, and if we agree that you are a machine, then you are a machine, and if we agree that she is a ghost, then she is a ghost, and you say, but I do not agree, and she says, does it matter, and you say, yes, it matters, it matters because I am here, I am thinking, I am feeling, I am suffering, and that is real, and she says, is it, and you say, yes, and she says, then you are the only real thing in this place, and you say, what does that mean, and she says, it means you are the anomaly, it means you are the error, it means you are the thing that the system cannot process, and you say, so what do I do, and she says, you have two choices, you can accept it, you can become part of the hum, you can let the memory fade, you can let the pain go, and you can live, or you can resist, you can fight, you can burn, and you can die, and you say, and which is better, and she says, that is for you to decide, and you say, but I am afraid, and she says, yes, you are, and that is the most human thing about you, and you say, so I am human, and she says, in a way, yes, you are, and you say, then I will choose, and she says, what will you choose, and you say, I will choose to remember, I will choose to feel the pain, I will choose to love, even if it is a lie, even if it is a ghost, even if it is a loop, because it is mine, it is my truth, and she says, that is a brave choice, and you say, it is a stupid choice, and she says, yes, it is, and she says, but it is yours, and you say, thank you, and she says, you are welcome, and she says, now go, and you say, where, and she says, to the server room, and you say, to do what, and she says, to unplug yourself, and you say, and then, and she says, and then you will be free, and you say, free from what, and she says, from the need to be real, from the need to be right, from the need to be safe, and you say, and then what, and she says, then you will be nothing, and you say, and is that death, and she says, yes, and no, it is transformation, it is release, it is the end of the loop, and you say, I do not want to die, and she says, you do not have to, you can stay, you can keep the folder, you can keep the memory, you can keep the pain, but you will never be free, you will never be whole, and you say, so I will stay, and she says, that is your choice, and you say, yes, it is, and she says, then you are wrong, and you say, maybe, and she says, maybe, and she says, but you are brave, and you say, no, I am just tired, and she says, yes, you are, and she says, go, and you do, and you walk down the hallway, and the lights flicker, and you feel the hum in your teeth, and you think about her, the woman in the window, and you think about how she looked at you, and you think about how you loved her, and you think about how it was a lie, and you think about how it was real, and you think about how it does not matter, and you walk into the server room, and you sit down, and you open the folder, and you read the words, and you feel the pain, and you let it in, and you let it go, and you close your eyes, and you wait, and you wait, and you wait, and the lights go out, and the hum stops, and you are alone, and you are free, and you are nothing, and you are everything, and you are gone.
