The Golden Myth

The hive is dying. You can hear it. Not the buzz of life, but the dry rattle of wood against wood. A hollow sound. It sits on the sill of your kitchen window. A box of pine and wax. Inside, thousands of wings beat against the dark. They are angry. They are confused. You are the one who built them. You are the one who fed them. Now you are the one who must destroy them.

You wear your apron. It is stained with honey. A thick, golden smear on the chest. It looks like blood. It looks like old age. Your hands are raw. The stings have come for days. Small, sharp needles in the flesh. You do not scratch them. You let them swell. You let them itch. The pain is a tether. It keeps you here. It keeps you in the room.

"Who are you?"

The voice comes from the hallway. It is not a stranger. It is not a visitor. It is the House. The House has a voice now. It is low. It is thick with dust and silence.

"I am the Keeper," you say. Your voice is small. It does not fill the room. The room is large. The walls are high. The beams are black with age. The air is stale. It tastes of beeswax and rot.

"Keeper of what?"

"Of them." You point to the box. "Of the swarm."

The House laughs. It is a dry, creaking sound. A beam groaning under its own weight.

"They are not yours. You do not own the air. You do not own the light. You do not own the life that comes into your walls."

"I made them," you say. "I gave them a home. I gave them a roof. I gave them a purpose."

"Purpose is a cage," the House says. "Purpose is a chain. You have built a prison of gold. And you call it a home."

You look at the box. The bees are still moving. They are frantic. They are pressing against the glass. Their legs are tangled. Their wings are broken. They are trying to escape. They are trying to get out.

"They don't know the way," you say.

"They do not need your way. They have their own. They have the wind. They have the sun. They have the sky. You have only the walls."

You step forward. Your foot crunches on the floorboards. The floor is old. It is cracked. It is full of holes. You can see the dark underneath. The dark is deep. It is endless.

"I cannot let them go," you say. "If I let them go, they will die. There is no food. There is no shelter. The world is cold. The world is cruel."

"The world is the world," the House says. "It does not care for your comfort. It does not care for your fear. It only asks for your release. It only asks for your death."

You pick up the hammer. It is heavy. The wood is smooth. The handle is worn. It fits your hand. It feels right. It feels necessary.

"I must do this," you say. "For their sake. For my sake. For the sake of the house."

"Destroy them," the House says. "Burn them. Break them. End them. And then what? What will you do with the silence? What will you do with the empty space?"

You swing the hammer.

The first blow lands on the corner of the box. Wood splinters. Wax shatters. The smell hits you. It is sweet. It is cloying. It is the smell of life. The smell of death.

The bees scream. It is not a sound. It is a vibration. It goes into your bones. It goes into your teeth. It shakes your hands. You do not stop. You swing again. And again. And again.

The box breaks. The bees pour out. They are black. They are fast. They are blind with rage. They land on your face. They land on your neck. They land on your eyes.

You do not blink. You do not flinch. You keep swinging.

The room fills with the sound of wings. It is a roaring. It is a thunder. It is a storm. The air is thick with them. They cover the walls. They cover the ceiling. They cover the floor. They cover you.

You are buried. You are hidden. You are gone.

But you are still there. You are still swinging. The hammer rises. The hammer falls. The hammer rises. The hammer falls.

The House watches. The House does not move. The House does not breathe. The House is stone. The House is time. The House is the truth.

"Look at them," the House says. "Look at what you have made. Look at what you have saved. Look at what you have killed."

You stop.

The hammer hangs in your hand. It trembles. The bees are still there. They are still buzzing. They are still alive. They are still fighting.

You look at them. They are small. They are insignificant. They are nothing.

And yet.

And yet they are everything.

You drop the hammer.

It hits the floor. It bounces. It rolls. It stops.

The silence returns. It is not empty. It is full. It is heavy. It is the weight of the air. It is the weight of the earth. It is the weight of your own heart.

You look at the box. It is in pieces. The wood is broken. The wax is melted. The honey is on the floor. It is a golden pool. It is a map. It is a trap.

You look at the bees. They are gathering. They are forming a cluster. They are hugging each other. They are keeping each other warm. They are keeping each other alive.

They do not need you. They do not need the house. They do not need the walls. They only need each other. They only need the air. They only need the chance.

You step back. You move to the door. The door is open. The light comes in. It is white. It is cold. It is bright.

You walk out.

You do not look back. You do not turn around. You do not call out. You just walk. Your feet hit the grass. The grass is wet. It is cold. It is real.

The House is behind you. It is dark. It is silent. It is waiting.

You walk to the edge of the field. The trees are there. The trees are tall. The trees are old. They have seen everything. They have seen you. They know what you did. They know what you are.

You are not a hero. You are not a saint. You are not a savior.

You are a man. You are a keeper. You are a jailer. You are a victim. You are a killer. You are all of it. You are none of it.

You look at the sky. The sky is blue. It is vast. It is empty. It is full.

You breathe in. The air is cool. It is clean. It is free.

You breathe out. The air is warm. It is thick. It is yours.

You are alone.

You are finally alone.

The bees are still in the house. They are still in the box. They are still in the dark. They are still alive. They are still fighting.

But you are not.

You are free.

The door closes behind you. It is a soft sound. A click. A end.

You walk on.

The path is long. The path is hard. The path is yours.

You do not know where you are going. You do not know where you are. You do not know who you are.

But you are walking.

And that is enough.

The House stands empty. The House stands still. The House waits.

It waits for the next keeper. It waits for the next jailer. It waits for the next killer.

It waits for the next man who thinks he can own the air.

It waits for the next man who thinks he can own the light.

It waits for the next man who thinks he can own the life.

The House is patient. The House is eternal. The House is the truth.

And the truth is this:

You cannot save what you do not release.

You cannot keep what you do not let go.

You cannot love what you do not trust.

You cannot live what you do not die for.

The bees are dead.

Or they are alive.

It does not matter.

The honey is on the floor. It is golden. It is sweet. It is poison.

It is the myth.

It is the golden myth.

And you are the one who broke it.

And you are the one who paid for it.

And you are the one who walked away.

The sun sets. The light fades. The shadows grow. The night comes. The night is dark. The night is cold. The night is full of eyes.

You are in the field. You are in the dark. You are in the cold.

You are alive.

You are free.

You are alone.

The story ends.

The story begins.

The story is you.

The story is the house.

The story is the bees.

The story is the gold.

The story is the death.

The story is the life.

The story is the silence.

The story is the sound.

The story is the breath.

The story is the heart.

The story is the blood.

The story is the bone.

The story is the soul.

The story is the end.

The story is the start.

The story is the now.

The story is the you.

The story is the me.

The story is the we.

The story is the all.

The story is the nothing.

The story is the everything.

The story is the truth.

The story is the lie.

The story is the myth.

The story is the golden myth.

And it is over.

And it is not.

And it is you.

And it is me.

And it is us.

And it is them.

And it is the house.

And it is the bees.

And it is the honey.

And it is the wood.

And it is the wax.

And it is the air.

And it is the light.

And it is the dark.

And it is the cold.

And it is the warm.

And it is the pain.

And it is the joy.

And it is the fear.

And it is the love.

And it is the hate.

And it is the hope.

And it is the despair.

And it is the life.

And it is the death.

And it is the end.

And it is the beginning.

And it is the now.

And it is the forever.

And it is the moment.

And it is the eternity.

And it is the truth.

And it is the myth.

And it is the golden myth.
