The Golden Quest

The blood is hot. It is copper. It tastes of rust and old iron. You spit it into the dust. The floor is marble. White. Cold. The chandeliers swing. Glass rain. Shards.

You are holding the vial. It is heavy. It is glass. It is filled with a liquid that glows. Amber. Gold. Like honey. Like sun.

The man before you is large. He wears black. His face is a mask. He swings. You dodge. His fist hits the wall. Stone chips. White dust flies.

"Stop," he says. His voice is gravel.

You do not stop. You cannot. Your body remembers. The training. The years. You are a soldier. You are a guard. You are a servant of the Crown. Or so you thought.

The second man enters. He is younger. His face is pale. His eyes are wide. He holds a pistol. The barrel is black. The metal is cold.

"Drop it," the young man says.

You do not drop it. You tighten your grip. The glass cuts your palm. It does not matter. The pain is a tether. It keeps you here. In the room. In the moment.

"I will not," you say. Your voice is low. A rumble. Like distant thunder.

The first man laughs. It is a dry sound. Like leaves skittering on pavement. "You are a fool," he says. "Do you know what this is?"

You know. You know what it is. It is the last dose. The final cure. The salvation.

"It is for her," you say.

"Her?" The young man tilts his head. "Who is her?"

You do not answer. You circle. The marble floor is slick with blood. Your own. Theirs. It pools. It darkens. The light from the chandeliers is broken. Fractured. Prismatic.

The system called it a miracle. A breakthrough. A new age. They said it would end the sickness. The rot. The decay. They said it was a gift from the gods. They lied. It was a product. A commodity. And now, it is a weapon.

The first man lunges. You catch his arm. You twist. The joint pops. A wet sound. He screams. It is a high sound. Birdlike. You throw him. He hits the pillar. He slides down. He does not get up.

The young man fires. The bullet hits the floor. Sparks fly. White. Bright. You move. You are fast. Faster than the lead. You close the distance. The gun is in his hand. The barrel is aimed at your chest.

"Please," he says. His voice breaks. It is thin. A wire about to snap. "You don't understand. They will kill you. They will kill everyone. If you take this away."

"Who is they?" you ask.

"The Council. The High Table. The ones who rule." He points the gun. His hand shakes. "They need it. For the state. For the people."

"People," you repeat. The word is strange. It is heavy. It is hollow. "What people?"

"Everyone," he says. "The masses. The commoners. They need the medicine. They are dying. You know they are dying."

You know. You saw them. In the streets. In the alleys. The coughing. The shaking. The eyes that saw nothing but the end. You saw your daughter. You saw her face. It was small. It was pale. It was fading.

"I know," you say.

"Then give it to them," the young man says. "Let them decide. Let the system work."

The system. The word is a stone. It sits in your stomach. It is cold. It is hard.

"Who decided?" you ask. "Who chose who gets it? Who chose who dies?"

The young man does not answer. His eyes dart. He looks at the door. It is open. Beyond it, there is darkness. And then, light. The light of the corridor. The light of the court.

More men come. They wear red. The color of anger. The color of blood. They hold batons. They hold clubs. They are silent. They are efficient. They are the face of the state.

"Move," the young man says. He backs away. He is afraid. He is a child. He is a witness. He sees. He sees what you have done. He sees what you are.

You look at the vial. The liquid swirls. It is beautiful. It is terrible. It is life. And death.

You remember the lab. The sterile white. The hum of the machines. The beakers. The tubes. The data. The numbers. They were so clean. So precise. They told you it was for the greater good. They told you the cost was acceptable. They told you the sacrifice was necessary.

You remember the signature. Your name. Ink on paper. Permanent. You signed it. You agreed. You thought you were saving the world. You thought you were a hero.

You were a tool. A blade. A hand.

The men in red are close now. Five. Ten. They surround you. The young man is gone. He ran. He left you. He is safe. He is far. He will tell the story. He will say you were a traitor. He will say you stole the future.

You look at the floor. The blood is drying. It is brown. It is dark. It is part of the marble now.

You hold the vial up. The light catches it. It glows. It burns. It is a star in your hand. A small, trapped sun.

You think of her. Your daughter. Eleanor. Her name is a song. A lullaby. She is in the room next door. She is sleeping. She is sick. The rot is in her lungs. The rot is in her blood. She is fading. Like the light in this room. Like the hope in your heart.

They said the medicine would be distributed. Fairly. Equally. They said the algorithm would decide. They said the system was just.

But you saw the list. You saw the names. The powerful. The rich. The connected. They were at the top. Your daughter was at the bottom. She was a number. A statistic. A cost.

You are a soldier. You follow orders. You protect the state. You enforce the will. But the will is broken. The will is rotten. The will is a lie.

You look at the vial. You look at the men. You look at the blood.

You have a choice. You can fight. You can run. You can give it to them. You can let the system take it. You can let the algorithm decide. You can let Eleanor die.

Or.

You can break it.

The thought is quiet. It is soft. It is like a leaf falling. It is like a breath held.

If you break it, it is gone. It is destroyed. It cannot be used. It cannot be hoarded. It cannot be sold. It cannot be stolen. It is free. It is nothing. It is dust.

The men step forward. "Drop it," the leader says. His voice is flat. Emotionless. "Drop it or be removed."

Removed. The word is clinical. It is cold. It is dead.

You smile. It is a small smile. It is sad. It is real.

"No," you say.

The leader nods. The men raise their batons. The sound is a hiss. A threat. A promise.

You look at the vial one last time. The amber liquid is still. It is waiting. It is hoping. It believes it is the answer. It believes it is the savior.

It is a lie.

You close your hand. You squeeze. The glass cracks. A thin line. A fracture. A tear.

You squeeze harder. The pain in your palm is sharp. It is bright. It is clear.

The vial shatters.

The sound is loud. A crash. A shatter. A break. The liquid spills. It flows. It runs. It soaks into the marble. It stains the white. It turns the stone gold.

The men freeze. They stare. Their eyes are wide. Their mouths are open. They do not move. They do not breathe.

The gold spreads. It is beautiful. It is tragic. It is the end.

You open your hand. The shards are in your palm. They cut. They bleed. You do not care. You hold the pieces. You hold the remnants of the miracle. You hold the fragments of the lie.

The leader steps forward. He looks at the gold on the floor. He looks at you. He looks at the blood. He looks at the shards.

"Destroy it," he says. "Kill him."

The men move. They are fast. They are violent. The batons swing. You do not fight. You do not run. You stand. You are still. You are calm. You are heavy.

The first blow hits your shoulder. It is hard. It is crushing. You feel the bone give. You feel the body break.

The second blow hits your head. The world spins. The light blurs. The sound fades. You fall. You hit the floor. You land in the gold. You land in the blood.

You look up. The ceiling is high. The chandeliers are swinging. The glass is rain. The light is broken.

You see the young man. He is in the doorway. He is watching. He is weeping. He sees the gold. He sees the blood. He sees you. He sees the truth.

He is the witness. He is the memory. He will remember. He will speak. He will tell the story. He will say you were a hero. He will say you were a fool. He will say you were a saint. He will say you were a criminal.

It does not matter.

You are in the gold. You are in the blood. You are in the marble. You are part of the floor. You are part of the foundation. You are part of the lie.

The men stand over you. They are silent. They are confused. They do not understand. They expected resistance. They expected fear. They expected a fight.

They got stillness. They got peace. They got an end.

The leader looks at you. He looks at the gold. He looks at the young man. He sighs. It is a long sound. It is a tired sound.

"Clean it up," he says. "Dispose of the body. Seal the room. File the report."

He turns. He walks away. His steps are heavy. They echo. They fade.

The men follow. They disappear into the dark. Into the corridor. Into the system.

You are alone.

The light is dim. The air is still. The gold is spreading. It is creeping. It is consuming. It is beautiful.

You think of Eleanor. You think of her face. You think of her breath. It is shallow. It is weak. It is almost gone.

You did not save her. You could not save her. The medicine was a trap. The system was a cage. The hope was a lie.

But you broke it. You broke the lie. You broke the chain. You broke the cycle.

You died for nothing. Or did you?

The gold touches your hand. It is warm. It is alive. It is a mirror. It reflects your face. It reflects your soul. It reflects the truth.

The truth is simple. The truth is heavy. The truth is blood.

You close your eyes. The dark is soft. The dark is kind. The dark is home.

The last thing you see is the light. The last thing you feel is the warmth. The last thing you hear is the silence.

The silence is golden.

The silence is red.

The silence is yours.
