The Wistful Mirror
The road was wet. It glistened under the gray sky. Maren walked. Her boots were heavy. Leather creaked. She carried a satchel. It was black. It was soft. Inside lay the Gown. It was silk. It was red. It moved like blood. It breathed.
She walked north. The trees were bare. The wind bit. It cut her cheeks. She did not shiver. She could not. The cold was a fact. Like the stone. Like the time. Time was a thief. It took her hands. It took her face. It took her name. Maren was a name. A shell. She was the walk. She was the weight.
The castle loomed. It was stone. It was old. It stood against the fog. It did not invite. It demanded. Maren climbed. The steps were steep. Her lungs burned. Air was thin. She reached the gate. Iron. Cold. She knocked.
The door opened. A guard stood there. He was tall. He was still. His eyes were flat. He wore armor. Steel. It clinked.
"State your purpose," he said.
"I seek the Queen," Maren said. Her voice was low. It was dry.
"You know the law," the guard said. "No entry. No light. No sound."
"I bring a gift."
The guard looked at the satchel. His eyes narrowed. He stepped aside. The door groaned. It opened inward. Darkness spilled out. It smelled of dust. It smelled of rot.
Maren stepped in. The door closed. The lock engaged. A heavy thud. The sound was final.
She was in the hall. The floor was marble. It was cracked. The walls were high. Paintings hung there. Faces. They watched. They smiled. They did not blink. The light was dim. Candles burned. They flickered. Shadows danced. They reached for her.
Maren walked. Her heels clicked. Tap. Tap. Tap. The sound echoed. It was a heartbeat. It was a warning.
She reached a door. Wood. Oak. It was carved. Lions. They roared in stone. She pushed. It swung open.
A room. It was round. It was white. Walls. Floor. Ceiling. No corners. Light came from nowhere. It was bright. It was sharp. It hurt her eyes.
A woman sat there. She was on a chair. She was still. She was beautiful. Her skin was pale. Her hair was silver. It fell like water. She wore a crown. Gold. It was heavy. It weighed on her brow.
The Queen.
Maren stopped. She stood in the doorway. Her breath was shallow. She felt the Gown. It pulsed. It wanted out. It wanted to be seen. It wanted to be worn.
"Who are you?" The Queen asked. Her voice was soft. It was far away.
"Maren," she said.
The Queen tilted her head. Her eyes were dark. They were deep. They held nothing. They held everything.
"You carry a weight," the Queen said.
Maren looked down. Her hand was on the satchel. Her fingers were stiff. She pulled it open. The silk slid out. It floated. It hovered. It was red. It was alive. It moved without wind. It formed a shape. A dress. A body. A self.
The Queen leaned forward. Her face was still. But her eyes changed. They widened. They shone.
"What is it?" she whispered.
"It is time," Maren said. "It is you."
The Gown rose. It wrapped around Maren. It touched her skin. It was warm. It was hot. It burned. It did not hurt. It felt like recognition. Like memory. It settled on her shoulders. It covered her chest. It hid her hands. It hid her face.
Maren was gone. The Gown was there. It stood in the light. It moved. It turned. It faced the Queen.
The Queen stood up. She moved to Maren. She reached out. Her hand was cold. She touched the silk. She smiled. It was a sad smile. It was a tired smile.
"You are beautiful," the Queen said.
"I am old," Maren said. Her voice came from the Gown. It was muffled. It was deep.
"Old?" The Queen laughed. It was a dry sound. "I am old. You are new. You are now."
The Queen touched the face of the Gown. The silk rippled. It formed an eye. It looked at the Queen. It looked at Maren.
"I know you," the Queen said. "I have seen you. In the mirror. In the glass. You were young. You were bright. You were full."
Maren felt the truth. It was a stone. It sank. It settled in her gut. She had been young. She had been bright. She had been full. She had walked away. She had chosen the path. She had chosen the silence. She had chosen the cold.
Why?
The memory came. It was sharp. It was bright. A room. A mirror. A girl. She looked at her reflection. The reflection looked back. It smiled. It winked. It said, *Run.*
Maren had run. She had run for years. She had run from the face. She had run from the name. She had run from the light. She thought she was free. She thought she was safe. She was wrong.
The Gown tightened. It constricted. It squeezed. It was not a dress. It was a cage. It was a skin. It was the self she had rejected. It was the self she had abandoned.
"Let go," the Queen said. Her voice was gentle. It was kind. It was final.
"I cannot," Maren said. "I am afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
"Afraid of the end."
The Queen stepped back. She pointed to the wall. There was a mirror. It was large. It was old. It was cracked. But it was clear.
"Look," the Queen said.
Maren turned. The Gown turned with her. She looked into the glass.
She saw herself. She saw the Gown. She saw the face. It was not young. It was not old. It was true. It was Maren. Her eyes were tired. Her cheeks were thin. Her hair was gray. But it was her. It was the real her. The one she had hidden. The one she had buried.
The Gown was not a gift. It was a burial shroud. It was a prison. It was the weight of knowing. Knowing who you are. Knowing what you have lost. Knowing what you have become.
Knowledge was a curse. It was a chain. It was a fire.
Maren felt the heat. It rose. It climbed. It burned her throat. It burned her lungs. She wanted to scream. She could not. The Gown held her. The Gown held her tight.
The Queen watched. She did not move. She did not speak. She waited.
Maren looked at her reflection. She saw the fear. She saw the pain. She saw the truth. It was ugly. It was beautiful. It was real.
She thought of the road. She thought of the rain. She thought of the cold. She had been so sure. She had been so certain. She had believed that if she walked, she would find peace. She had believed that if she carried the Gown, she would be whole.
She was wrong.
The Gown was not a part of her. It was a part of the past. It was a part of the Queen. It was a part of the curse.
Maren closed her eyes. She stopped fighting. She stopped pulling. She stopped resisting. She let the Gown tighten. She let the heat rise. She let the truth burn.
She opened her eyes. The Gown was gone.
She was standing in the room. She was naked. She was shivering. The silk was on the floor. It was dark. It was still. It was dead.
The Queen was gone. The chair was empty. The light was dim. The candles had burned out.
Maren looked at the mirror. She saw her reflection. It was still there. It was still real. It was still true.
She touched her face. It was cold. It was real. She touched her hair. It was gray. It was real.
She was old. She was tired. She was alone.
But she was free.
The door opened. The guard stood there. He looked at her. He saw her naked. He saw her shivering. He saw her alive.
He stepped aside. The door was open. The night was outside. The rain had stopped. The stars were out. They were cold. They were bright.
Maren walked. She walked to the door. She stepped out. The air hit her. It was sharp. It was clean. It was real.
She looked back. The castle stood. It was dark. It was silent. It was a stone.
She turned. She walked north. The road was wet. It glistened. The trees were bare. The wind bit.
She did not carry a satchel. She did not carry a Gown. She carried nothing. She was light. She was empty. She was full.
The path was long. The night was deep. She walked. Her boots were heavy. Leather creaked.
She did not look back. She did not need to. The past was dead. The mirror was broken. The truth was free.
She walked into the dark. She walked into the cold. She walked into the end.
The stars watched. They did not blink. They did not care. They were old. They were eternal. They were indifferent.
Maren was small. She was human. She was real.
She walked.
The road went on. It did not end. It did not stop. It simply was.
She walked.
The cold was a fact.
Like the stone.
Like the time.
She walked.
