The Pale Circus
The gate was broken.
I stood before it. Rain slicked the cobblestones. The air smelled of wet wool and iron. I held the sword. It was heavy. A relic. A path. A boundary. I was the King’s Guard. Or so the men said. They looked at me with fear. And hunger.
I am old now. Or perhaps I am young. Time is a blur. I remember the weight. The cold. The hunger in my belly. It gnawed. Like a rat. I did not eat for three days. My hands shook. But I held the sword tight. It was my anchor. My mirror. I saw myself in the steel. Pale. Silent.
The village was dead. Not dead. Quiet. The houses stood like broken teeth. The people were gone. Or hidden. I walked the streets. My boots made no sound. I was a ghost. A shadow. I sought the Lord. Lord Ashworth. He lived in the manor. A white stone beast on the hill.
I heard voices. Inside the barn. I drew my blade. The metal sang. A low note. I pushed the door open.
Three men sat there. Mud on their faces. They held bowls of broth. The steam rose. It curled like smoke. They looked at me. They did not run. They smiled.
"Who goes there?" one asked. His voice was rough. Like gravel.
"I am the Guard," I said. My voice was thin. A wire.
"We know you," the man said. He pointed a fork at me. "You are the Pale One."
I did not answer. I looked at the others. They were soldiers. Or were they? They wore rags. No armor. No shields. Just knives. Small ones. Hidden in belts.
"Give us the sword," the first man said.
I stepped forward. The floorboards creaked. "It is not yours."
"Everything is ours," the second man said. He laughed. A dry sound. "The King is far. The law is far. We are here. We are the law."
I gripped the hilt. My knuckles turned white. I thought of the hunger. The cold. I thought of the children in the village. They had no bread. They had no fire. I had left them. I had gone to the manor. I had sought justice. I had sought the Lord. But the Lord was a myth. A story.
"I will not give it," I said.
The third man stood. He was tall. Lean as a whip. He held a knife. It glinted in the dim light.
"Then you die," he said.
He stepped forward. I raised the sword. The steel caught the light. It was beautiful. It was terrible. It was me. I saw my face in it. No. I saw no face. Only the reflection of the rain. The rain outside. The rain inside.
The tall man swung. I parried. The clash rang out. Sharp. Clear. It echoed in the barn. The broth spilled. It ran across the floor. Black. Like oil.
I fought. I did not think. My body moved. Old muscle memory. I had fought for years. For the King. For the law. For the idea. But the idea was empty. Hollow. Like the barn. Like the houses.
The knife grazed my arm. Pain. A hot line. I did not flinch. I drove the sword forward. It pierced the first man’s chest. He gasped. He fell. The broth splashed on his face. He looked surprised. Confused.
The other two retreated. They backed against the wall. The tall man raised his knife again.
"You do not understand," he said. His breath came in short bursts. "We are not enemies. We are the same. We are the poor. The forgotten. You are just... louder."
I looked at him. I saw my shadow in his eyes. Deep. Dark. I saw the hunger. I saw the fear. I saw the love. A destructive love. A love for the community. A love for the collective. It consumed them. It consumed me.
I lowered the sword. Slowly. The tension in the room snapped. The air changed. It grew cold.
"Why?" I asked.
He shrugged. "Justice," he said. "The King’s justice is a lie. It feeds on us. We take what is given. We survive. That is our justice."
I looked at the dead man. The blood pooled. It mixed with the broth. A dark river. I felt nothing. No triumph. No anger. Only a deep, heavy silence.
"I am the Guard," I said again.
"You are a ghost," the tall man said. He spat on the floor. "Go back to your gate. Guard your broken gate. It is all you have."
I turned. I walked out. The rain hit my face. Cold. Sharp. I did not wipe it away. I walked to the manor. The white stone beast. It loomed over me. The door was closed. Locked. I knocked. No one answered. I knocked again. Hard. The sound was hollow.
I sat on the step. The stone was wet. I held the sword across my knees. I looked at the village below. The lights were out. The fire was gone. The people were gone. Or they were hiding. In the dark. In the fear.
I remembered the gate. The broken gate. It was a path. A boundary. I had held it. I had defended it. But what was I defending? Nothing. Air. A shadow.
The tall man was right. We were the same. The Guard and the rebels. The King and the poor. We were all trapped. In the house. In the body. In the time.
I stood up. My legs were weak. I looked at the sword. The steel was dark. The rain ran down it. I sheathed it. The click was final.
I walked back to the village. I did not go to the manor. I went to the barn. The body was still there. The other men were gone. Fled. Like rats.
I looked at the dead man. His eyes were open. Fixed on the sky. I covered them. A gentle motion. A final act. I sat beside him. I waited.
The rain stopped. The clouds broke. A sliver of moon appeared. Pale. Thin. It lit the barn. It lit the blood. It lit me.
I thought of the children. I thought of the bread. I thought of the fire. I had sought the Lord. I had sought the high justice. The pure justice. But the justice was here. In the mud. In the blood. In the silence.
It was a tragedy. A beautiful tragedy. The wheel turned. The blade turned. I turned.
I stood. I picked up the sword. I walked out into the night. I did not look back. I walked to the gate. The broken gate. I stood in the center. I raised the sword. Not to fight. To point. To mark.
I was the boundary. I was the path. I was the ghost.
The wind blew. It tore at my cloak. I did not move. I was the stone. I was the iron. I was the silence.
The village slept. The hunger slept. The fear slept.
I held the sword. I held the night.
I was the Guard.
I was the Pale One.
I was the end.
And the beginning.
The moon rose. It was full. It was bright. It was cruel.
I smiled. A small smile. A sad smile.
I walked away. Into the dark. Into the rain. Into the life.
The gate was broken.
I was whole.
