The Notebook on the Rooftop
The jazz came up through the floorboards at midnight, as it always did. Henry Winthrop lay in bed and listened to it—trumpet and piano and a singer whose voice was like whiskey poured over ice. He had been awake for hours. He would have been awake regardless, because sleep had become a luxury he could no longer afford.
It was 1925, and Manhattan was a city that never slept and never forgave. Henry had arrived in the city three years ago, a twenty-six-year-old from Iowa with a degree from the University of Chicago and a pocket full of stock tips that had already doubled in value. He was twenty-nine now, and his account at the brokerage firm on Wall Street held more money than his father had seen in three generations.
He did not know what to do with it.
The notebook sat on his nightstand. It was a small thing—leather-bound, its cover worn soft by years of handling. His father William had given it to him the day Henry left Iowa, standing on the platform of the Chicago terminal with a suitcase in one hand and the notebook in the other. "Your grandfather wrote this," William had said. "And his father before him. It has everything."
Everything. The names of the Winthrop men who had come to America from Scotland in 1842 and walked from the Great Lakes to the Iowa prairie with nothing but a wagon and a determination to own land that had never been owned before. The dates of their births and deaths, their marriages and their children. And at the back of the notebook, a route: from New York to Iowa, via Route 34, passing through three states, approximately four days. Each stop was named. Each distance was marked. It was a map of the Winthrop bloodline, written in William's careful, precise hand.
Henry had not opened the notebook in months.
Dorothy was sleeping beside him. She slept with her back to him, as she had been sleeping for the past year. They had been married for five years. They had not spoken a genuine sentence to each other in three. Dorothy was twenty-six and she spent her days at bridge clubs and her evenings at parties where the champagne flowed and the conversations flowed less. She was beautiful in the way that beautiful things in museums are beautiful—perfect, distant, and belonging to someone else.
Henry got out of bed and walked to the window. Below him, the streets of Manhattan were alive with the kind of energy that could only be described as desperate. Cars honked. People shouted. A street musician was playing a trumpet on the corner, and the sound rose through the night like a prayer that no one was listening to.
Henry put on his coat and went out into the street.
The underground club was in Greenwich Village, behind a door that looked like it led to a storage room and smelled like cigarette smoke and spilled beer. Henry knew the code—he knocked three times, waited, knocked twice more, and the door opened to reveal a staircase that descended into a room full of smoke and music and people who had come to forget, if only for a few hours, that they existed.
Lu was on stage. She was thirty-two, a singer with a voice that could make a man feel things he had spent his entire life avoiding. She was singing a song Henry did not know, in a key that made his chest ache, and he stood in the corner of the room and listened and tried not to feel.
She finished the song and came off the stage. She saw him in the corner and walked over, her movements slow and deliberate, the way a cat moves when it knows it is being watched.
"You came," she said.
"I always come."
"That is the problem, Henry. You always come. And you never stay."
She ordered two whiskeys and they stood at the bar and drank them in silence. The jazz started up again—something faster this time, a tempo that made people move without knowing they were moving.
"I might leave," Lu said.
Henry turned to look at her. "Leave New York?"
"Leave here. Chicago is looking for a headliner. The Blackhawk. They offered me a position—six months, good pay, a real stage. Not this basement."
Henry felt something move inside him. It was not jealousy. It was not fear. It was something he had not yet given a name.
"When?" he asked.
"Soon. Maybe two weeks."
Henry nodded. He did not know what to say. In Iowa, when someone told you they were leaving, you asked them to stay. You made them a better offer. You reminded them of the cornfields and the wide sky and the fact that everyone who left Iowa eventually came back. But Henry was not in Iowa. His father arrived on a Wednesday. William came by train from Iowa, carrying a single suitcase and wearing a suit that had been good twenty years ago and was still good in the way that honest things are good—not beautiful, but true.
Henry picked him up at Grand Central Station. They drove through the afternoon in Henry's car, a Packard that William had insisted on buying because "a man should drive something that lasts." The city passed by the window—skyscrapers and billboards and people walking with the hurried desperation of men who believed that speed was the same thing as direction.
Your apartment is small, William said.
It is efficient, Henry said.
It is lonely, William said. It is the same thing.
Henry did not answer.
William stayed in the guest room, which was really a study that Henry rarely used. He filled it with the quiet industry of a man who refuses to be displaced by a new environment. He made coffee every morning at six. He watched the news every evening at eight. He sat in the armchair by the living room window and looked at Henry without saying anything, which was somehow more unsettling than any question.
On the third day, William took the notebook out of his suitcase and placed it on the coffee table.
"Your grandfather," he said, "walked Route 34 from New York to Iowa in eighteen seventy-two. It took him five days. He walked because he could not afford a train ticket. He said the walking taught him something that trains cannot teach."
"What?" Henry asked.
"That distance is not something you overcome. It is something you carry."
Henry looked at the notebook. The leather cover was worn. The edges were frayed. He could see his grandfather's hand in the way the pages were numbered, his father's hand in the way the route was marked. Three generations of Winthrop men, each one leaving and each one marking the way back.
"I do not want to go back," Henry said.
"I did not ask you to go back," William said. "I asked you to know where back is."
The stock trouble came on a Friday. A client of Henry's—arich man named Harrington who made his money in railroads and lost it in speculation—had called in his position, demanding money that Henry did not have. Harrington owed the brokerage firm forty thousand dollars. If Harrington defaulted, the firm would come after Henry, and Henry would lose everything—the apartment, the car, the account, the carefully constructed life he had built in three years.
Henry sat at his desk in the brokerage office and stared at the phone. He could fix it. He had connections. He could borrow the money from a man named Goldstein, a Jewish lender on lower Broadway who charged interest rates that would have been illegal in a state with stronger laws. All he had to do was sign.
He signed.
That evening, he met Lu at the underground club. She was packing. Her suitcase was on the stage, next to the microphone. She was singing a song she would sing in Chicago, a song about leaving and about coming back and about the fact that sometimes leaving and coming back were the same thing.

"Goodbye, Henry," she said.
"Goodbye, Lu."
She looked at him for a long time. "You should come with me."
Henry did not answer.
Lu picked up her suitcase and walked down the street. Henry stood on the sidewalk and watched her go. He did not follow.
He went home. Dorothy was at a party. The apartment was empty and quiet and smelled like the perfume she had worn that morning—something expensive and French and designed to make a man feel things he could not name.
Henry went to the rooftop. He stood at the edge and looked out over Manhattan. The city was alive below him—a sea of light and sound and movement. Brooklyn was in the distance, a dark shape against the horizon. That was the direction of home. Not Iowa. Brooklyn. The direction in which the people who loved you were, or had been, or would be again.
William appeared beside him. Henry had not heard him come.
"Your grandfather," William said, "stood on a rooftop in New York just like this. It was 1872. He had just arrived from Scotland. He was twenty years old and he had no money and no friends and no idea what he was doing here. He stood on this rooftop and looked at the city and he thought he would never survive it."
"Did he?"
William smiled. It was a small smile, but it was genuine. "He survived it. But not in the way he expected. He did not conquer the city. The city conquered him. And then he conquered himself. That is the difference, Henry. The city does not care about you. But you can care about the city. And that changes everything."
Henry looked at Brooklyn. The notebook was in his pocket. He could feel it through the fabric—small, worn, heavy with the weight of three generations of men who had left and marked the way back.
He did not go back to Iowa. He did not stay in Manhattan. He did something neither his grandfather nor his father had done. He bought a small house in Long Island, on a road that connected the two worlds—the world of the city and the world of the farm. He kept a job on Wall Street, but a smaller one, one that paid enough and asked for less. He sold most of his positions. He kept enough to live on.
The notebook stayed on his table. Route 34 was marked in his father's hand. Henry did not follow it. But he did not close it either.
The jazz played from somewhere below, carried up through the floorboards like a message from a world that refused to be forgotten. Henry sat in his chair, the notebook open on his lap, and listened.
