The Wistful Throne

The rain hits the tin roof like gravel. You count the drops. One. Two. Three. It is a habit. A rhythm. The shop is empty. The air smells of sawdust and stale coffee. You are alone. The clock on the wall ticks. It is loud. It is too loud. You are a woodworker. You make chairs. Good chairs. Strong chairs. But you are not a carpenter anymore. Not really. You are a man trapped in a box. The box is the town. The box is the guild. The box is the rules.

The guild is a beast. It eats time. It eats breath. It eats the color from your days. You have served it for thirty years. You obey. You file your reports. You pay your dues. You keep your head down. It is safe. It is dull. It is dead.

You remember the letter. It was on your bench. A thick envelope. No return address. Just your name. Your handwriting? No. A stranger’s. The ink was blue. The paper was cream. You opened it. Your hands shook. The paper was soft. It felt like skin.

*The throne awaits. Come at dawn. Bring your hands.*

No signature. No explanation. Just a command.

You thought it was a prank. A joke. The boys from the pub. They like to mess with you. You are the quiet one. The odd one. You do not drink. You do not talk. You just work. But the words burned. *Bring your hands.*

You went to the pub. You asked them. They laughed. They clinked their glasses. They said you were mad. They said the guild was your only king. They said there was no other throne.

You went back to the shop. You looked at your hands. They were rough. They were scarred. They were strong. They were yours.

The next day, you went.

It was dawn. The sky was grey. The fog was thick. You walked to the edge of town. The pines stood like sentinels. They were tall. They were dark. You walked until the town was behind you. You walked until the road was gone. You walked until you were lost.

You found it.

It was a clearing. The grass was wet. The trees formed a circle. In the center, there was a throne.

It was not a chair. It was a monument. It was made of oak. It was carved with vines. It was carved with faces. The faces were screaming. The faces were weeping. The faces were laughing. It was beautiful. It was terrible.

You sat down.

It fit. It fit perfectly. Your back was straight. Your knees were bent. Your hands rested on the arms. You felt a pull. A tug. It was in your chest. It was in your bones.

You are not alone.

A woman stands at the edge of the circle. She is small. She is grey. She is old. She wears a coat that is too big. She holds a cane. She looks at you. She smiles.

"You found it," she says.

Her voice is thin. It is like dry leaves.

"Who are you?" you ask.

"I am the keeper," she says. "I am the witness."

She steps forward. The grass crunches under her feet. She stops before the throne. She looks at your hands. She looks at your face.

"Do you know why you are here?" she asks.

You shake your head.

"You are here because you are tired," she says. "You are here because you are broken. You are here because you have given everything to the machine. And now, you want to take it back."

The machine. The guild. The rules. The system.

"It is a trap," you say.

"It is a door," she says. "It is a choice. You can sit. You can rule. You can change the way things are. You can break the mold. You can free the wood. You can free the hands."

You look at the throne. The wood is warm. It pulses. It beats. It has a heart.

"If I sit," you say, "what happens to them?"

"To the guild?" she asks. "To the men who make the rules?"

"They will hate you," she says. "They will fear you. They will try to stop you. They will use their power. They will use their lies. They will say you are a thief. They will say you are a thief."

You feel a cold knot in your stomach.

"I have nothing to gain," you say.

"You have everything to lose," she says. "But you have something to gain. You have your self. You have your truth. You have your freedom."

You look at your hands. You look at the throne. You look at the woman.

"I am afraid," you say.

"Good," she says. "Fear is real. Fear is human. If you are not afraid, you are not ready."

She turns away. She walks back into the trees. Her coat disappears into the mist.

You are alone again.

The throne waits.

You stand up. You walk to the edge of the circle. You look back at the town. You see the smoke from the chimneys. You see the lights in the windows. You see the life that is safe. The life that is dull. The life that is dead.

You turn back. You sit down.

The wood creaks. The vines twist. The faces on the throne change. They stop screaming. They stop weeping. They stop laughing. They become still. They become calm.

You feel the power. It is heavy. It is vast. It is cold. It is hot. It is everything and nothing.

You close your eyes.

You remember the first chair you ever made. It was for your mother. It was simple. It was plain. It was strong. It was love.

You remember the first time you joined the guild. You were young. You were hungry. You wanted to belong. You wanted to be good. You wanted to be right.

You remember the years. The long years. The grey years. The years of silence. The years of obedience.

You remember the pain. The pain in your back. The pain in your hands. The pain in your heart.

You remember the void. The empty space inside you. The space where your soul should be.

You open your eyes.

The woman is gone. The trees are still. The rain has stopped. The sky is clear. The sun is rising. The light is gold. The light is warm.

You are on the throne. You are the king. You are the ruler. You are the master.

But you are not happy.

You are not free.

You are a prisoner.

You are a prisoner of your own power.

You look at your hands. They are not rough. They are not scarred. They are smooth. They are soft. They are pale. They are weak.

You try to stand. You cannot. Your legs will not move. Your arms will not lift. You are stuck. You are fused. The wood is part of you. The vine is part of you. The throne is part of you.

You are the throne.

You scream. But no sound comes out. Your mouth is closed. Your throat is tight. Your lungs are full. You cannot breathe.

You remember the woman. You remember her smile. You remember her words. *You have something to gain.*

You were wrong. You had nothing to gain. You had everything to lose. You lost your hands. You lost your self. You lost your life.

You are a statue. You are a monument. You are a warning.

The rain begins again. It hits the tin roof of the shop. It hits the leaves of the pines. It hits the stone of the throne.

It falls. It falls. It falls.

You are wet. You are cold. You are alone.

You wait. You wait for dawn. You wait for rescue. You wait for death.

Nothing comes.

The days pass. The weeks pass. The months pass. The years pass.

The people in the town forget you. They say you ran away. They say you joined a sect. They say you went mad. They say you are dead.

They do not know. They do not care.

They go back to their work. They go back to their rules. They go back to their dull, safe, dead lives.

They do not know that you are watching. They do not know that you are listening. They do not know that you are waiting.

You are the guardian. You are the judge. You are the executioner.

You watch them make their chairs. You watch them cut their wood. You watch them file their reports. You watch them pay their dues.

You see the flaw. You see the crack. You see the lie.

You could stop them. You could break them. You could end it.

But you cannot.

You are part of the system. You are the heart of the beast. You are the engine that drives the machine.

You are the throne.

You are the throne that you sought. You are the throne that you found. You are the throne that you became.

It is a cruel joke. It is a bitter truth. It is a heavy burden.

You close your eyes. You wait for the end. You wait for the rain to stop. You wait for the sun to rise.

It does not come.

The rain never stops.

The sun never rises.

You are in the dark. You are in the cold. You are in the silence.

You are alone.

You are the throne.

You are the throne.

You are the throne.
