The Wistful Ashes

The air in Sector Four tastes of copper and stale ozone. You are sitting in the center of the room. It is a small room. Concrete walls. One window. The glass is thick. Outside, the sky is the color of a bruise. You do not look out. You look at your hands. They are shaking. The tremor is fine. It moves from your fingertips to your elbows. You breathe in. You breathe out. The rhythm is mechanical. In, four counts. Out, four counts. This is the only prayer you know.

You are a Senior Auditor. That is your title. You wear the grey uniform. It fits you well. It is always clean. It is always pressed. You have worn it for twenty years. You have not slept in a bed for three days. You have eaten only the grey paste from the dispenser. It tastes of nothing. It tastes of ash. You have been waiting for the transfer. You have been waiting for the truth.

The door opens. It slides sideways. There is no sound. Only a hiss of pressurized air. A man enters. He is tall. He wears the same grey uniform, but his collar is different. It has a gold trim. He is Director Hale. You have seen him on the screens. You have never met him. He looks at you. His eyes are cold. They are the color of ice. He does not smile. He does not frown. He is a mirror. He reflects nothing.

"Agent," he says. His voice is soft. It is low. It vibrates in the floor. "Sit."

You are already sitting. You do not move. You keep your hands in your lap. You watch your fingers. They are pale. The nails are short. You have cut them yesterday. You used the razor from the hygiene kit. The metal was cold. The blood was red. It looked shocking against the grey. You cleaned it. You scrubbed it. It is gone now.

Hale walks to the table. It is metal. It is round. He places a box on it. The box is black. It is small. It has no label. He places it in front of you. He sits down. He leans back. He crosses his legs. He looks at the box. Then he looks at you.

"Open it," he says.

You reach out. Your hand hovers over the box. The air above it feels warm. You open the lid. Inside, there is a single object. It is a vial. It is glass. It is clear. Inside the vial, there is a liquid. It is yellow. It is thick. It looks like honey. It looks like bile.

"What is this?" you ask. Your voice is steady. You are proud of it. You have trained your voice. It does not break. It does not waver.

Hale smiles. It is a thin smile. It does not reach his eyes. "It is the solution," he says. "It is the end."

You stare at the vial. You do not understand. You are a good agent. You follow the rules. You report the anomalies. You suppress the unrest. You keep the sector quiet. You have done everything right. You have sacrificed everything. You sacrificed your family. You sacrificed your name. You sacrificed your soul. You did it for the Order. You did it for the peace.

"Why?" you ask.

Hale leans forward. He rests his elbows on the table. He looks at you with pity. "You are tired, Agent. You are old. Your body is failing. Your mind is slowing. You are no longer effective. The system does not allow for decay. It does not allow for weakness."

"I am not weak," you say.

"You are tired," he says. "Look at your hands."

You look at your hands. The tremor has stopped. Your hands are still. They are pale. They are empty.

"This is a mercy," Hale says. "It is a release. You will feel no pain. You will feel no fear. You will simply stop. It is the highest honor. To serve until the end."

You look at the vial. The yellow liquid swirls inside. It catches the light. It looks beautiful. It looks deadly. You think of your brother. His name was Thomas. He was a good man. He was kind. He loved the flowers. He loved the rain. He did not believe in the Order. He believed in people. He was taken ten years ago. They took him to Sector One. They said he was ill. They said he needed treatment. You never saw him again. You never heard from him again. You assumed he died. You assumed he was executed. You did not report it. You did not speak of it. You kept your silence. You kept your secret. You were loyal.

You pick up the vial. The glass is cold. It feels heavy. It feels real. You uncork it. The smell hits you. It is sweet. It is cloying. It smells like rotting fruit. It smells like death.

"I don't want to," you say.

Hale stands up. He adjusts his tie. He looks at his watch. He is checking the time. He is impatient. "You do have a choice, Agent. But the choice is limited. You can drink. Or you can go to the Pit. The Pit is not a place. It is a state. It is eternal darkness. It is eternal cold. It is where the waste goes. It is where the broken go. You choose."

You look at him. You see the gold on his collar. You see the clean lines of his uniform. You see the perfection of his face. You realize something. You realize that he is not a man. He is a machine. He is part of the system. He is the wall. You are the stone that has been chipped away. You are the dust.

You think of Thomas. You think of his hands. He had rough hands. They were strong. He used to hold your hand when you were a child. He used to tell you stories. He used to tell you that the sky was not a ceiling. He used to tell you that the world was wide. He was wrong. The world is a box. The sky is a lie. The peace is a cage.

You look at the vial again. The liquid is still. It waits. It is patient. It is kind. It offers you rest. It offers you sleep. It offers you the end of the pain. The pain in your bones. The pain in your mind. The pain of remembering. The pain of forgetting.

You raise the vial to your lips. The glass touches your mouth. It is cold. You tilt your head back. The liquid flows down your throat. It burns. It burns like fire. It burns like acid. You cough. You sputter. You drop the vial. It shatters on the floor. The yellow liquid pools in the cracks of the concrete.

Hale does not move. He does not react. He watches you. His eyes are empty. He is waiting. He is calculating. He is processing.

You fall to your knees. You are gasping. Your chest heaves. Your throat is on fire. You feel the heat spreading. It moves to your stomach. It moves to your heart. You are dying. You are not dying. You are changing. You are transforming.

You look at Hale. He is still standing. He is still calm. He is still perfect. You realize that you made a mistake. You thought you were defying him. You thought you were choosing life. You were wrong. You are still part of the system. Your refusal is just another data point. Your death is just another statistic. Your rebellion is just another function.

You crawl toward the table. Your hands drag on the floor. The concrete is rough. It scrapes your skin. Blood wells up. It is red. It is bright. You reach for the shattered glass. You pick up a shard. It is sharp. It is jagged. You hold it in your right hand.

Hale steps closer. He reaches for your shoulder. His hand is cold. His fingers are strong. He grips you. He pulls you up. You are too weak. You fall. He catches you. He holds you. He holds you like a father. He holds you like a lover. He holds you like a god.

"Rest now," he says. His voice is gentle. It is soothing. It is a lullaby.

You look at his face. You see the fear in his eyes. It is small. It is hidden. But it is there. He is afraid. He is afraid of you. He is afraid of the choice you made. He is afraid of the chaos you represent. You are not a stone. You are a crack. You are a flaw. You are the end.

You raise the shard. You do not aim for his heart. You aim for his eyes. You want to see him see you. You want to see him understand. You want to see him know. You thrust the glass forward.

The sound is wet. It is soft. It is final.

You fall back. You lie on the floor. You look up. The ceiling is white. It is smooth. It is endless. You see the light. It is bright. It is pure. It is free.

You think of Thomas. You think of the flowers. You think of the rain. You are not in the box. You are in the sky. You are in the wind. You are in the ash.

The room is quiet. The air is still. The door opens. Men in grey enter. They carry a stretcher. They carry a bucket. They work quickly. They work efficiently. They do not look at you. They do not look at Hale. They are blind. They are deaf. They are part of the machine.

They lift you. They lift Hale. They put you in separate bags. They seal them. They are identical. They are grey. They are heavy.

They carry you out. They carry you to the elevator. They ride down. They walk through the corridors. The lights are fluorescent. The walls are concrete. The air is cold.

They reach the door. It is the door to the outside. It is the door to the world. They open it. The wind hits them. It is cold. It is sharp. It carries the scent of dust. It carries the scent of decay.

They walk to the truck. It is a large truck. It is black. It has no windows. It has no lights. It is a ghost.

They put the bags in the back. They close the door. The driver starts the engine. The engine roars. It shakes the ground. It shakes the air.

The truck drives away. It drives into the distance. It drives into the dark. It drives into the void.

You are in the bag. You are in the dark. You are in the silence. You are alone. You are free. You are ash. You are wind. You are gone.

The road is long. The sky is grey. The world is quiet. The machine turns. The machine eats. The machine forgets.

You are the memory. You are the scar. You are the truth.

The truck stops. The back door opens. The bags are dumped. They hit the ground. They roll. They stop.

The men walk away. They disappear into the mist.

The sun rises. The light hits the bags. The grey fabric glows. The ash rises. The ash drifts. The ash dances.

The ash covers the ground. The ash covers the road. The ash covers the world.

It is beautiful. It is sad. It is real.

You are the ash. You are the wind. You are the end.

The machine continues. The machine turns. The machine eats.

You are gone.
