The gate to the storage facility was supposed to be locked. It was not. Mike pushed it open with his shoulder, heard the metal grind, and walked in. The facility was called Queen's Self-Storage, which was a name that sounded like it had been chosen by someone who did not know what a queen was and had only heard the word in passing. The buildings were metal, grey and dented, arranged in rows that got narrower the further back you went, like the aisles of a church for people who had forgotten how to pray but still needed somewhere to put their stuff.

Mike had rented unit 47B because it was the cheapest one available, and the cheapest thing available was always the one that nobody wanted, and the one that nobody wanted was always the one that had something wrong with it. In Mike's experience, the something wrong was usually that the previous tenant had died and the family had not known what to do with his lawn mower and his collection of toolboxes and his boxes of things that had seemed important at the time and were now just things.

Unit 47B was empty except for a layer of dust that was thick enough to write in. Mike wrote nothing. He stood in the doorway and looked around, and then he closed the door and locked it and went home to his apartment, which was above a laundromat in Jackson Heights and smelled of detergent and the kind of loneliness that comes from living somewhere that is not your home but is also not anywhere else.

He did not think about the storage unit for three days. On the fourth day, he was walking back from the subway station, taking a shortcut through an alley he had never noticed before, which was possible because he had never had a reason to walk through that alley before, and he noticed the door.

It was set into the side of the storage facility's back wall, at the far end of the property where the metal buildings ended and the overgrown lot began. The door was iron, thick and rusted, and it had been welded shut. Not locked—welded. Someone had taken an arc welder to the seam between the door and the frame and run a bead of molten metal around the entire perimeter, fusing the door to the building in a way that suggested intent, urgency, and a desire to keep something in rather than keep something out.

Mike stood in front of the door for a moment. He was a man who had spent his life opening things—car doors, apartment doors, the doors of restaurants where he delivered food and the doors of offices where he picked up packages and the doors of people's lives that he was not invited into but was always standing near, close enough to see through the windows. Welded shut was something he had not encountered before, and it interested him.

He went home and got his crowbar.

The crowbar was not the right tool for the job, but it was the only tool he had, and the weld had been done poorly, or at least imperfectly—there were gaps in the bead, places where the metal had not fully fused, and Mike worked at those gaps for two hours, sweating in the June heat, his hands blistering, his back aching, until the door gave with a sound like a gunshot and fell inward onto concrete that had not been cleaned in years.

The space beyond was small. Maybe ten feet by ten feet, with a ceiling that was low enough that Mike had to stoop to walk inside. The air was cool and damp and smelled of old paper and something else, something organic and sweet, like fruit that had been left in a drawer too long. The walls were concrete, the floor was concrete, and the space was filled with things.

Not much. Not a treasure trove. Just enough to suggest that someone had lived here, or stored things here, or both, and then stopped doing whatever they were doing and never came back. There was a wooden chair with one leg shorter than the others. A cardboard box full of books whose titles had faded to illegibility. A piano, upright, its keys yellowed and some of them missing, its lid closed and latched with a padlock that had rusted shut. A stack of framed photographs, the glass cracked, the images behind them faded to shades of brown that made it impossible to tell who the people were or where they had been standing or what they had been smiling at.

Mike stood in the doorway and looked at everything, and then he started moving things.

He moved the chair first. Then the box of books. He carried them out to his car, which was parked in front of the storage facility and was the kind of car that had once been white and was now the colour of road salt, and he loaded them onto the passenger seat and drove to a recycling centre in Elmhurst, where he sold the books for three dollars and the chair for nothing because nobody wanted a chair with one leg.

He came back the next day and moved the piano. He could not sell it, but he could sell the metal in it—the strings, the frame, the tuning pins—and he found a scrap yard on Northern Boulevard that paid him forty-five dollars for the weight of it. He came back the day after that and moved the photographs. He could not sell those, but he kept them, stacked them in the corner of unit 47B, and looked at them when he had nothing else to do.

He was on his fourth day of moving things when Tony appeared.

Tony was a large man, which was not surprising in a neighbourhood where large men were common, but the way he moved was what caught Mike's attention. He walked with the confidence of a man who owned the ground he was standing on, which was not true—he was standing on other people's property, in a facility where every square foot was rented to someone who paid for it every month—but he moved like he owned it, and that was the kind of confidence that people in this neighbourhood learned early and protected fiercely.

"What are you doing?" Tony said. He was standing in the doorway of the hidden space, looking at Mike, looking at the things Mike had moved, looking at the things Mike had not moved yet.

"Moving stuff," Mike said.

"Whose stuff?"

"Does it matter? The place is empty. Nobody is using it."

Tony stepped inside. He was taller than Mike had expected, and wider, and he had a face that was round and red and seemed permanently surprised, as if he were always on the verge of saying something he would immediately regret. "This is my space," he said. "I have been using this space for two years."

"You never told anyone."

"I did not need to. It is mine."

Mike looked at him carefully. Tony was not lying. He believed, with the absolute conviction of a man who had convinced himself of something for long enough, that this space was his, and that belief was the only property deed he needed.

"It is locked," Mike said. "Welded shut. If it is yours, why is it welded shut?"

Tony's face changed. The surprise faded, replaced by something harder, something that had been forged in arguments and won and lost and won again until it had become the kind of hardness that people mistake for strength. "Because I did not want anyone to find it."

Mike nodded. He did not argue. He did not defend himself. He simply stood there, in the space that Tony believed was his and Mike believed was nobody's, and he waited to see what Tony would do next.

Tony did something unexpected. He walked past Mike, into the space, and he picked up one of the framed photographs. He looked at it for a moment, turned it over, and put it back down. Then he picked up a book from the stack, opened it, and closed it. Then he picked up a small wooden box from the corner, opened it, and looked inside.

"What is in the box?" Mike said.

"Nothing," Tony said. "Stuff. Old stuff. Stuff that does not matter."

He put the box down and turned to Mike. "You can take what you have already moved. But the rest stays."

"Fine," Mike said.

They stood in silence for a moment. The space was cool and damp, and the smell of old paper and sweet decay filled the air, and Mike thought about how strange it was that two men could stand in a room full of other people's forgotten things and have a conversation about ownership that had nothing to do with the things and everything to do with the men.

Then Tony's expression changed. The hardness returned, and with it came the look of a man who had just made a decision and was not going to change it.

"Go home," he said.

"Okay."

"Lock the door behind you. And do not come back."

Mike walked out. Tony followed. Mike closed the iron door. Tony reached past him and turned a key in a lock that Mike had not noticed, and then Tony walked away, his footsteps echoing on the concrete as he moved toward the main part of the storage facility, his large frame disappearing behind the row of metal buildings.

Mike stood outside the door for a moment. He did not have a key. He did not expect to find one. He got in his car and drove home.

He did not go back the next day. He went back the day after that, because going back was what he did, and because he had left things in there that he had not finished moving, and because the part of him that was curious was louder than the part of him that was wise.

The door was still locked. He tried the handle, and it did not move. He was about to turn away when he heard a sound from inside the space—a thud, like something heavy falling, and then a voice, muffled and angry, saying something that Mike could not understand.

He pressed his ear to the door. The voice came again, clearer this time: "Hello? Is someone there?"

It was Tony's voice.

Mike did not answer. He stepped back from the door, and then he heard the sound of metal on metal, like something being dragged across concrete, and then a crash, and then silence.

He stood there for a long time. He thought about calling the police. He thought about going home. He thought about the forty-five dollars he had made from the piano and the three dollars he had made from the books and the fact that he had not eaten dinner the night before and probably would not eat dinner tonight either.

He went home.

He was in his car, driving back to Jackson Heights, when he heard the sound. It was a knock on the window, soft at first, then harder, and when he looked over, he saw Tony standing outside his car, his face red and his eyes wide, and he was pointing at the storage facility, at the hidden door, and he was saying something that Mike could not hear because the window was up and Tony was not inside the car.

Mike rolled down the window. "What?"

"Get out," Tony said. "Get out of the car."

Mike got out. Tony grabbed his arm and pulled him toward the storage facility, and Mike went because fighting was not what he did, and because something in Tony's face told him that this was important, or at least important to Tony, and that was enough.

They reached the hidden door. Tony pushed it, and it opened. He pushed Mike inside, hard, and Mike stumbled, fell, and hit the concrete floor hard enough to knock the wind out of him. Tony stepped in after him, closed the door, and turned the key.

Mike heard the lock click. He heard Tony's footsteps receding. He heard the sound of Tony walking away, getting smaller, fading into the noise of the storage facility and the street beyond it.

Mike lay on the concrete for a moment. Then he got up. He was not hurt. He was not injured. He was simply locked in a room full of other people's forgotten things with a man who had decided that he did not want company.

He stood in the centre of the space and listened. The air was cool. The smell of old paper and sweet decay was stronger now, closer, and it filled his lungs with every breath. He walked to the walls and ran his hands along the concrete, feeling for cracks, for gaps, for anything that might lead somewhere.

There was nothing in the walls. But there was something in the ceiling.

He looked up. The ceiling was concrete, low and flat, and it met the walls at angles that were sharp and clean. But in one corner, near the far wall, the ceiling was different—it was slightly raised, as if there were a space above it, a夹层, a place where the building had been designed to have a second level that had never been finished.

Mike found a stack of crates in the corner and climbed onto them. He reached up and touched the raised section of the ceiling. It was wood, not concrete, and it was old and dry and slightly spongy under his fingers. He pushed, and it moved.

It was a panel, and it opened upward, revealing a narrow space above the ceiling, maybe two feet high, filled with dust and insulation and the kind of darkness that exists in spaces that light has not touched in decades.

Mike pulled his flashlight from his pocket and shone it into the space. The beam revealed a narrow passage, running the length of the room, and at the far end, a vent, its bars rusted but intact.

He pushed the panel fully open and climbed into the space above the ceiling. It was tight, maybe two feet high, and he had to crawl on his stomach, his hands and knees scraping against insulation that felt like wet paper. The passage was dark and smelled of dust and something else, something metallic and sharp, like the inside of an old refrigerator.

He crawled for what felt like ten minutes but might have been five. The passage ended at the vent, and the vent was larger than he had expected—maybe eighteen inches by eighteen inches, big enough for a thin man to squeeze through.

Mike pushed against the vent grille. The bars were rusted, but they were also old, and age had made them brittle. He pushed harder, and one of the bars bent. He pushed harder still, and it broke, then another, then another, until the grille was gone and the opening was wide enough to climb through.

Beyond the vent was a space that was not a vent at all—it was a ceiling crawlspace, the kind that exists in buildings that were designed with attics that were never finished, and the crawlspace sloped upward, and at the top of the slope, Mike saw light.

He climbed. The crawlspace was tight and dusty and filled with the kind of silence that exists in spaces that have not been occupied for a long time. He climbed until his hands were raw and his knees were bleeding and the light was close enough that he could see it was daylight, and then he reached a roof, and the roof had a skylight, and the skylight was open, and through the skylight, Mike could see the sky.

He pushed the skylight fully open and climbed out onto the roof, and from the roof, he could see the street, and from the street, he could see the exit of the storage facility, and from the exit, he could see Tony's truck, which was parked in front of the main gate, and Tony was not in it.

Mike climbed down from the roof, landed on the overgrown lot behind the storage facility, and walked to the main gate. It was unlocked. He pushed it open, walked out, and got into his car.

He drove home. He did not go back to the storage facility. He did not go back the next day, or the day after that, or the week after that. He went back three weeks later, when he had forgotten about Tony and the locked door and the space above the ceiling, and when he had nothing better to do.

The space was empty.

Not just empty of Mike's things—empty of everything. The chair, the books, the piano, the photographs, the wooden box, the crates, the dust, the smell of old paper and sweet decay—gone. The concrete walls were bare. The floor was clean, as if it had been pressure-washed. The iron door was still welded shut, but the weld had been cut and re-welded, and the key lock was gone.

Mike stood in the doorway and looked at the empty space, and he thought about Tony, who had come back, who had taken everything, who had cleaned the space and locked the door and left, and who had probably sold everything on Craigslist for a few hundred dollars that he would spend on something that did not matter.

Mike got in his car and drove home. He stopped at a thrift store on the way and bought a plastic hair clip for eight dollars. He did not have a daughter. He had bought it because it was eight dollars and he had sixteen dollars in his pocket and he wanted to do something with half of them that was not paying rent.

He sat on his sofa that evening, above the laundromat, above the sound of spinning drums and the smell of detergent, and he looked at the wall across from him. The wall had a crack in it, running from the ceiling to the floor, and the crack had been there when he moved in and would be there when he left, and he looked at it and thought about the space above the ceiling and the vent and the skylight and the roof, and he thought about Tony, and he thought about the man who had welded the door shut twenty years ago and the people whose things had been in the room, and he thought about nothing in particular, which was the kind of thinking that Mike did best.

Tomorrow, he thought, I should check another place.
