The Pale Exile

You stand in the hall. It is white. The walls breathe. Not metaphorically. They expand and contract. The air tastes of iron and old paper. You are a soldier. Your uniform is clean. It is too clean. It does not fit. You are thin. You have not eaten in three days. The hunger is a sharp tooth in your gut. You ignore it. Duty is a blade. You hold it tight.

This is the Ministry. Or so they called it. It is no longer a building of stone. It is a flesh. A living architecture of bone and membrane. The ceiling is high. Veins pulse in the plaster. The light is pale. It comes from nowhere. It is the color of a bruise. You look at your hands. They shake. You do not look at them again.

You remember your brother. Thomas. He is here. Or he was. He disappeared into the walls six months ago. They said he defected. They said he joined the other side. You believed it. The system is perfect. The system does not make mistakes. If Thomas is gone, he is a traitor. You repeat this. It is a mantra. It keeps the rage at bay. Rage is heavy. You cannot carry rage and the hunger both. You drop the rage. You keep the duty.

A door opens. It is not a door. It is a mouth. It smiles. The teeth are long. They are yellow. You walk in. You must walk in. The floor is soft. It sinks under your boots. It whispers. It knows your name. It knows your sins. You do not answer. You walk.

The room is vast. It is a mirror. Every surface reflects you. But the reflections are wrong. In one mirror, you are old. In another, you are a child. In the third, you are dead. You look away. You look at the center of the room. There is a desk. It is made of ribs. Behind the desk sits a figure. It is wearing your uniform. It is wearing your face.

It is not Thomas. It is you. A version of you. A future you. Or a past you. The figure does not move. It waits. The hunger grows. It is a fire. It licks your throat. You need food. You need water. You need the truth.

"Hello," you say. Your voice is dry. It cracks.

The figure does not speak. It watches. The walls tighten. The air thins. You feel your lungs burn. You take a step. The floor ripples. It is trying to swallow you. You stop. You stand still. You are a statue. You are a ghost.

You think of your sister. Eleanor. She is in the city. She is safe. She is waiting. You promised her you would return. You promised her you would bring Thomas home. You failed. You are a failure. The word is a stone in your chest. It is heavy. It is cold.

The figure stands. It moves slowly. Its joints crack. It walks toward you. It does not run. It does not fight. It approaches with a grace that is terrifying. It is you, but it is not you. It is what you could have been. It is what you chose not to be.

It stops. It is close. You can smell it. It smells of rain. It smells of home. It smells of Thomas.

"You believed them," the figure says. Its voice is your voice. It is soft. It is sad.

"I had to," you say. "The law."

"The law is a lie," it says. "The law is a cage. You built the cage. You locked yourself in it. You locked him in it."

"No." The word is a shout. It echoes. The mirrors shatter. Glass flies. It cuts your face. You do not feel it. You do not care. "He left. He chose to leave. He betrayed us."

"Did he?" The figure tilts its head. "Or did you make him betray you? By being here? By being this? By being nothing?"

You stare at it. You see yourself. You see your eyes. They are hollow. They are empty. You see the hunger. It is not just for food. It is for meaning. It is for love. It is for the brother you lost. It is for the sister you left.

The room changes. The walls recede. The floor hardens. The air clears. You are in a cell. It is small. It is dark. There is a bed. There is a table. There is a window. It is high. It is barred. Outside, it is night. The stars are out. They are bright. They are cold.

You are not in the Ministry. You are in a prison. A real prison. A concrete prison. You have been here for weeks. You do not know how long. Time is a loop. You wake. You eat. You sleep. You wake. You are alone.

You look at your hands. They are not shaking. They are still. They are strong. You grip the edge of the table. The wood is rough. It is real. It is solid. You are here. You are real.

The door opens. Light floods in. It is harsh. It is white. A man enters. He is tall. He is thin. He wears a gray suit. He holds a file. He looks at you. He does not smile. He does not frown. He is neutral. He is the system.

"Thomas Ashworth," he says. "You are being released."

You do not move. You do not speak. You watch him. He walks to the table. He places the file down. He opens it. He reads from it.

"Your brother has been cleared," he says. "The charges are dropped. The evidence was fabricated. The testimony was coerced. You were the victim of a conspiracy."

You hear the words. They are water. They are air. They are nothing. You do not feel relief. You do not feel joy. You feel a hollow. A deep, dark hole.

"Why?" you ask. Your voice is low. It is a whisper.

The man looks up. He is surprised. He adjusts his glasses. "Why what?"

"Why did I not know?"

"You were in protective custody," he says. "We needed to verify the evidence. It took time. You were safe. You were protected."

"Protected from what?"

"From the truth," he says. "And from yourself."

You laugh. It is a short, dry sound. It is a cough. You stand up. Your legs are weak. You lean on the table. The man watches you. He is afraid. You can see it. He is afraid of you. He is afraid of the man in the mirror.

"Thomas is dead," you say.

The man blinks. "What?"

"Thomas is dead. He died in the walls. He died in the Ministry. I saw him. I watched him fade. I watched him become part of the building. And I did nothing. I let it happen. I let the system eat him. And I called it duty."

The man reaches for the phone. "Sir, I need to call a doctor—"

"Stop," you say. You are calm. You are clear. The hunger is gone. The fire is out. You are cold. You are ice.

"You are in shock," the man says. "You have been here for two months. You are delusional. There is no Ministry. There is no living building. There is only this cell. And you. And me."

"Is that true?" you ask. "Is that the truth?"

"I am a federal agent," he says. "I deal in facts. I deal in reality. This is reality."

You look at him. You look at his suit. It is clean. It is pressed. It is perfect. It is a lie. You look at his eyes. They are empty. They are hollow. They are the same as yours.

"You are the traitor," you say.

The man freezes. "What?"

"You betrayed him. You betrayed my sister. You betrayed the truth. You built the cage. You locked me in it. You let the system consume him. And you called it justice."

"I had no choice," he says. His voice breaks. It is a crack. It is a fracture. "The orders came from above. We had to contain it. We had to protect the public. Thomas was... he was a risk. He saw too much. He knew too much. We had to neutralize the threat."

"You killed him," you say.

"We contained him," the man says. "He is gone. He is part of the infrastructure. He is part of the foundation. It is efficient. It is necessary."

You look at the window. The stars are still there. They are indifferent. They do not care. They do not judge. They are light. They are distance.

You walk to the door. The man does not stop you. He is paralyzed. He is terrified. You walk out. You walk down the hall. The hall is long. It is gray. It is empty. You walk. You walk until the door opens. You step outside.

It is day. The sun is bright. It is warm. It is real. You are in a city. It is a Western city. It is a place of stone and steel. It is a place of life. It is a place of death. You look around. People are walking. They are busy. They are alive. They do not know. They do not care.

You find a bench. You sit. You close your eyes. You breathe. You feel the air. It is cold. It is crisp. It is yours. You are free. You are alone. You are empty.

You think of Eleanor. She is waiting. She is in the city. She is safe. You will go to her. You will tell her. You will tell her the truth. You will tell her that the system is a monster. You will tell her that Thomas is part of it. You will tell her that you are part of it.

You open your eyes. You stand up. You walk. You walk toward her. You walk toward the end. You walk toward the light. You walk toward the dark. You walk. You walk. You walk.
