PART I
The morning I came to America, the air smelled like salt and diesel and hope. I stood on Ellis Island at nineteen years old, holding my mother's hand and listening to the inspector call names in a language I barely understood. The line moved slowly. People whispered to each other in Yiddish and Russian and Italian. I said nothing. I was tired from the boat and afraid of the man with the pencil who would decide whether I was allowed to stay.
They let me stay. My mother cried. My father straightened his shoulders like a man who had just been promoted. We walked out of Ellis Island and into a city that was louder and faster and more terrifying than anything I had ever known.
New York in 1905 was a city of immigrants. Everyone had come from somewhere else, and everyone was trying to become someone new. My family settled on the Lower East Side, in a tenement on Orchard Street where six of us lived in two rooms and the hallway smelled of cabbage and coal smoke and other people's lives.
My father got a job in a garment factory on the Bowery. He worked twelve hours a day for seven dollars. I was too young to work legally, but nobody asked questions if you said you were older and your hands looked strong enough to hold a needle.
I started at ten dollars a week. Ten dollars. I sent three dollars home to my parents every week and used the rest for food and rent and the occasional piece of fruit, which was a luxury I allowed myself once a week to remind myself that I was still human.
The work was brutal. The machines were loud and fast and indifferent to the fact that they were cutting through human fingers. I saw a girl named Rivka lose part of her index finger to a sewing machine in my first month. She didn't stop crying for an hour. The foreman told her to wrap it in a rag and keep working.
I kept working. And I kept thinking.
There was something happening in my head that I couldn't explain. It wasn't a voice. It wasn't a vision. It was more like a feeling—a sense that I had done this before, not as a child in Russia, but as someone else, somewhere else, some time else.
I would look at a pattern of fabric and suddenly know how to cut it more efficiently. I would watch a line of workers sewing and suddenly understand how to rearrange them to save twenty minutes an hour. I would read a newspaper article about a new machine in Europe and understand how to improve it.
I told myself it was just being young and paying attention. I told myself it was just hunger making me clever.

PART II
By 1907, I was making twenty dollars a week. By 1908, I was making thirty. I had saved enough to move my family out of the tenement and into a small apartment in Brownsville, which was still poor but had better light and a window that opened without breaking.
I started thinking about starting my own business. Not a factory—I didn't have the capital for that. Something smaller. Something that used the ideas in my head instead of the machines in the factory.
The idea came to me on a Tuesday in March 1908. I was walking home from work, passing a shop window that displayed children's clothes. The clothes were beautiful but expensive—custom-made for rich children. And I thought: why can't poor children have nice clothes too?
Not rags. Not hand-me-downs. Nice clothes. Simple clothes. Clothes that are made well and cost little.
I went home and drew a design on a piece of paper. A children's coat—simple cut, minimal waste, made from inexpensive fabric. I took the design to a tailor friend named Boris and asked him if he could make a sample.
He made three samples in a week. I took them to a wholesale dealer on Canal Street and showed him the samples and explained the idea. He laughed. Then he stopped laughing. Then he asked how many I could produce and how much they would cost.
I could produce two hundred a week. They would cost forty cents each. He offered me sixty cents each.
That was the beginning.
I rented a small room above a bakery on Rutgers Street and hired four women to work from home. I provided the fabric and the patterns and the supervision. The women sewed in their apartments and delivered the finished coats to the bakery every Friday.
It worked. The coats sold. I hired more women. I rented a bigger room. I hired more women.
By 1909, I had thirty women working for me. I was making two hundred dollars a month. I moved my family to a proper apartment with three rooms and a kitchen and a bathroom that we shared with one other family.
Sarah Gold worked for me. She was seventeen, Italian, with dark hair and dark eyes and a mind that worked faster than anyone I had ever met. She helped me design new patterns, improve the cutting process, and negotiate with fabric suppliers. She was the best employee I ever had.
We became friends. Then something more than friends. Then something less than lovers, because I wasn't ready for that, and she deserved more than a garment worker with big ideas and empty pockets.
PART III
The strike began in November 1909. It started with the women—twenty thousand garment workers, mostly young immigrant women, walked out of their factories and onto the streets. They carried signs that said "I Would Rather Starve as a Free Person than Be a Slave" and "Better the walls of a prison than the sweatshops of America."
They called it the Uprising of the Twenty Thousand. I called it the moment I had to choose who I was.
Tommy O'Brien came to my room one evening and told me about the strike. He was Irish, twenty years old, with a voice like gravel and a heart that was bigger than his brain. He asked me to support the strikers.
"I can't afford to," I said.
"You can't afford not to."
I thought about this. I thought about the thirty women who worked for me. Some of them were strikers. Some of them weren't. If I supported the strike, I would have to stop production. If I stopped production, I would lose money. If I lost money, I might lose everything I had built.
But if I didn't support the strike, I would be betraying the women who made my coats, and the women who made the coats in the factories, and the idea that a person's work has value beyond the price someone is willing to pay for it.
I supported the strike.
I closed my operation. I told the women to go home and picket. I gave them what little money I had left to buy food. I stood on the sidewalk with Tommy and the strikers and the police and the scabs and the reporters and the onlookers, and I held a sign that said "Garment Workers of the World, Unite."
The strike lasted until February 1910. It ended without a victory. The factories didn't sign union contracts. The wages didn't increase significantly. The conditions improved only marginally.
But something had changed. The women had learned that they had power. The public had learned that garment workers were human beings, not machines. And I had learned that building a business was easy compared to building a movement.
PART IV
The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory burned on March 25, 1911. One hundred and forty-six people died. Most of them were young immigrant women, the same women who had struck the year before. The doors had been locked from the outside to prevent stealing and unauthorized breaks. When the fire started, there was no way out.
Sarah was in the building that day. She survived—she had been sent to my room to deliver a batch of coats. When she came back, she saw the smoke. By the time she got back to the factory, it was too late.
She lost two friends. She lost her coworker Rose, who was sixteen and had a baby at home. She lost her friend Fannie, who had promised to send money to her mother in Italy next month.
I held Sarah while she cried. She didn't make a sound. She just shook, like a leaf in a hurricane, and tears ran down her face and onto my shirt, and I held her and said nothing because there was nothing to say.
After the fire, the city changed. Not overnight. Not completely. But enough. New laws were passed. Fire codes. Labor laws. Inspection requirements. The deaths at Triangle had been so public and so terrible that the city could no longer pretend it didn't know what was happening in its factories.
I continued my business. It was smaller now—ten women instead of thirty. I paid them better. I gave them breaks. I made sure the fire exits were unlocked.
Sarah went to night school. She wanted to be a teacher. I helped her study. She learned to read and write and do math, and she cried sometimes when she realized how much she had been denied by a system that valued her labor but not her mind.
We never became lovers. We became something better: two people who had survived the same fire and decided to keep walking.
I still have the feeling sometimes—the sense that I have done this before, that I have stood on this sidewalk, made this choice, held this woman's hand. I don't know where it comes from. I don't know if it's memory or intuition or just the strange way the human mind creates patterns in chaos.
It doesn't matter. What matters is that I was there. What matters is that I chose. What matters is that I kept choosing, day after day, to be a decent person in an indecent world.
