The Golden Farce

The rain hit the stone. It was cold. It was wet. I stood by the window. My hand held the hilt. The iron was cold. I looked at the rose. It was black. It was crushed.

The door opened. Thomas walked in. He was wet. He was tired. He carried a lantern. The light was dim. He saw me. He stopped.

"Sir," he said. "The men are gone."

I did not answer. I looked at the flower. It was a hybrid. A red and white mix. It was my favorite. I had grown it. It was dying.

"Where did they go?" I asked. My voice was low.

"To the east," Thomas said. "To the castle."

I nodded. The castle was a stone box. It was high. It was old. I had guarded it for years. I had served the Lord. I had kept the peace. Or so they said.

"Are you safe?" I asked.

"I am safe," he said. He sat down. The chair creaked. He looked at me. His eyes were tired. They were brown. They were deep.

I looked at the rose again. The petals fell. One by one. They hit the floor. They made a small sound. A thud. A whisper.

Thomas looked at the floor. He saw the petals. He looked up. He saw my face. He saw my hand on the sword.

"Sir," he said. "What is wrong?"

I did not speak. I felt a pain in my chest. It was a dull ache. It was old. It was new. It was growing.

"Nothing," I said.

"Your face," Thomas said. "It is pale."

"It is the rain," I said. "It is cold."

Thomas stood up. He walked to me. He was close. I could smell him. He smelled of earth. He smelled of sweat. He smelled of life.

"Let me help," he said. His voice was soft. It was gentle. It was warm.

I shook my head. No. I could not let him help. I could not let him see. I was a guard. I was a man of law. I was a man of order. I had to be strong. I had to be right.

"The Lord sent a message," Thomas said. "He wants you there. Now."

I knew that. I had known it before. I had known it for days. I had felt it in the air. I had felt it in the stone. The Lord was angry. The Lord was afraid. The Lord was wrong.

"Why?" I asked.

"They say you failed," Thomas said. "They say you let the thieves pass."

I laughed. It was a dry sound. It was a hollow sound. It was a lie.

"I did not fail," I said. "I did what was right."

"Right?" Thomas asked. He tilted his head. He was confused. He was innocent. He believed in the system. He believed in the Lord. He believed in me.

"Yes," I said. "I did what was right."

Thomas looked at me. He did not believe me. Or he did not understand. I could not tell. I did not care. I cared about the rose. I cared about the pain. I cared about the truth.

The truth was simple. The truth was ugly. The truth was blood.

I looked at the window. The rain was still falling. It was heavy. It was loud. It was washing away the world. It was washing away the lies.

"Go," I said. "Go to the castle."

Thomas hesitated. He looked at the door. He looked at me. He looked at the rose.

"Sir," he said. "I will wait for you."

"No," I said. "Go."

He nodded. He picked up the lantern. He walked to the door. He stopped. He turned back.

"I love you," he said.

The words hung in the air. They were heavy. They were real. They were true.

I felt the pain spike. It was sharp. It was bright. It was fire.

I looked at him. I looked at his eyes. I saw myself. I saw the man I used to be. I saw the man I had lost. I saw the man I was becoming.

I reached out. I touched his face. His skin was warm. It was soft. It was alive.

"Go," I said.

He did not move. He stood there. He waited. He watched.

I let go. My hand fell to my side. I looked at the rose. The last petal fell. It was black. It was dead.

Thomas turned. He walked out. The door closed. The latch clicked. It was a final sound. It was a closing.

I was alone. I was still. I was calm.

I picked up the sword. It was heavy. It was old. It was mine. I had carried it for ten years. I had cleaned it every day. I had oiled it every week. It was part of me. It was my bone. It was my blood.

I looked at the flower. I picked it up. It was in my hand. It was crushed. It was broken. I held it tight. I felt the stems. They were sharp. They cut my palm. I did not care. I felt the blood. It was warm. It was red. It was life.

I walked to the door. I opened it. The rain hit my face. It was cold. It was wet. It was real.

I walked out. I walked into the dark. I walked into the night. I walked into the storm.

The road was long. The road was hard. The mud was deep. The stones were slippery. I slipped. I fell. I got up. I walked on.

I thought of Thomas. I thought of his face. I thought of his eyes. I thought of his words. I love you.

I thought of the Lord. I thought of his face. I thought of his voice. I thought of his orders. I thought of his lies.

I thought of the thieves. I thought of their faces. I thought of their hands. I thought of their blood. I had killed them. I had killed them to keep the peace. I had killed them to keep the order. I had killed them because they were wrong.

But they were not wrong. They were hungry. They were scared. They were like me. They were like us. They were human.

I had made a choice. I had chosen the law. I had chosen the Lord. I had chosen the system. I had chosen the lie.

And now I had to face it. I had to face the consequence. I had to face the end.

I reached the castle. It was a shadow. It was a monster. It was a jail. I saw the gates. They were open. I saw the men. They were waiting. They were armed. They were angry.

I saw the Lord. He was on the wall. He was in his armor. He was in his crown. He looked down at me. He looked cold. He looked hard. He looked empty.

"Come," he said. "Come up."

I climbed the stairs. They were stone. They were cold. They were long. I climbed. I climbed. I climbed.

I reached the top. I stood before him. I held my sword. I held the rose.

"You are late," he said.

"I am here," I said.

"You are guilty," he said.

"I am innocent," I said.

He laughed. It was a cold laugh. It was a cruel laugh. It was a dead laugh.

"Innocent?" he said. "You let them die. You let the peace break. You let the law fall."

"No," I said. "I let the truth rise."

He looked at me. He looked at my sword. He looked at the rose.

"Drop it," he said.

I did not move. I held the sword. I held the rose. I held my ground.

"Drop it," he said again. His voice was louder. His voice was harder. His voice was final.

I looked at him. I looked into his eyes. I saw the fear. I saw the doubt. I saw the weakness. He was not strong. He was not right. He was not the law. He was just a man. He was just a lie.

I raised the sword. I raised the rose. I held them out. I held them up. I held them high.

"I am done," I said.

He raised his hand. The men moved. The arrows flew. The stones fell. The air screamed.

I did not move. I did not fight. I did not run. I stood still. I stood firm. I stood true.

The arrows hit me. I felt them. I felt the pain. I felt the cold. I felt the blood.

I looked at the Lord. I looked at his face. I saw his fear. I saw his shame. I saw his end.

I looked at the rose. I crushed it in my hand. It was black. It was dead. It was gone.

I fell. I fell to my knees. I fell to the ground. I fell into the stone.

I looked up. The sky was dark. The rain was hard. The wind was loud.

I saw Thomas. He was at the gate. He was watching. He was crying. He was screaming.

I smiled. I smiled at him. I smiled at the world. I smiled at the truth.

I was free. I was whole. I was one.

The pain was gone. The fear was gone. The lies were gone.

I was the rose. I was the stone. I was the rain.

I was the end. I was the beginning.

I closed my eyes. I let go. I let go. I let go.

The rain fell. The stone held. The night came.

It was quiet. It was still. It was done.
