The Faded Bouquet
You walk the stone path in the grey dawn. The mist clings to the roots of the oaks. It is wet. It is cold. Your cloak is heavy. It is stitched with silver thread. The thread glints in the weak light. You are the Warden of the Veil. You serve the Abbey of St. Jude. The bells do not ring today. The air is still. It holds its breath.
You enter the refectory. The table is long. The wood is dark. It is scarred by centuries of knives. The Abbot sits at the head. He is old. His face is a map of lines. He does not look up. He stirs his tea. The spoon clinks against the porcelain.
"Margaret," he says. His voice is dry. It is like leaves scraping stone. "You are late."
"The fog," you say. Your voice is steady. It is your armor. "I lost my way."
He looks at you then. His eyes are pale. They are the color of winter ice. "The fog is not lost, Margaret. It is a curtain. And you are the hand that lifts it."
You sit. The chair creaks. It is a small sound. It feels loud. The other monks are not there. They are in the fields. They are in the chapel. You are alone with the Abbot.
"Did you see them?" he asks.
"Who?"
"The ones in the dark. The ones who whisper."
You shake your head. "I saw nothing but the mist."
He smiles. It is a thin smile. It does not reach his eyes. "The mist hides much, daughter. But it does not hide the truth. Not from me. Not from you."
He places a object on the table. It is a small box. It is made of bone. It is white. It is smooth. He pushes it toward you.
"Open it," he says.
Your hands tremble. You do not know why. You reach for the box. The bone is warm. It is warm as skin. You lift the lid.
Inside is a necklace. It is made of black glass. The beads are round. They are perfectly round. In the center is a pendant. It is a single eye. It is carved from obsidian. It is wet. It looks wet. It looks alive.
"What is this?" you ask.
"It is the Eye of Silence," he says. "It was given to the last Warden. It was given to her mother before her. It has been in our family for a thousand years. It is your birthright, Margaret."
You stare at the eye. The eye stares back. You feel a pull. It is in your chest. It is a hook in your heart. You want it. You need it. It is yours. It has always been yours.
"Put it on," he says.
You pick it up. The glass is cold. It is colder than the air. You put it around your neck. It rests on your collarbone. It feels heavy. It feels right.
"Feel it," he says.
You close your eyes. You listen. The room is quiet. Then you hear it. It is a whisper. It is in your ear. It is not a voice. It is a thought. It is your own thought, but twisted.
*You are not the Warden. You are the vessel. You are the door. They are coming. They are hungry. They have been waiting for you. You are the key. You are the lock. You are the blood. You are the sin. You are the lie.*
You open your eyes. The Abbot is watching you. He is not smiling now. He is frowning.
"What did you see?" he asks.
"Nothing," you lie. The word tastes like ash. "I saw nothing."
"Nothing?" he asks. His voice is sharp. It cuts the air. "You are the Warden. You must see. You must hear. That is your duty. That is your sin."
"I am the Warden," you say. "I do what is asked."
"No," he says. He stands up. The chair scrapes back. It is a harsh sound. "You are the gate. And you are failing. The veil is thinning. The darkness is seeping through. You must seal it. You must sacrifice."
"I will not sacrifice," you say.
"You must," he says. "The power demands a price. The Eye demands a life. Not yours. Not yet. But someone's. The corruption must be stopped. The evil must be purged. You have the power. Use it."
"I will not kill," you say.
"You are not killing," he says. "You are saving. You are cleansing. Is that not good? Is that not right?"
The words ring in your head. *Good. Right. Saving. Cleansing.* They sound like a prayer. They sound like a command.
"I need time," you say.
"You have no time," he says. "The night is coming. The fog is thick. The creatures are close. If you do not act, we are all lost. The Abbey will fall. The town will burn. The world will end."
He points at you. His finger is long. It is white. It is bone.
"Do it," he says.
You stand up. You leave the room. You walk down the hall. The stones are cold under your feet. You walk to the chapel. The doors are open. The candles are out. The dark is absolute.
You go to the altar. You kneel. You pray. But the words do not come. You reach for the necklace. The obsidian eye is warm. It is burning now.
*Do it. Do it. Do it.*
The whisper is loud. It is in your blood. It is in your bones.
You see him. He is standing in the dark. He is a monk. He is young. His name is Thomas. He is your ally. He is your friend. He is holding a knife. He is shaking. He is crying.
"Margaret," he whispers. "I am sorry. I am so sorry. He made me. He made me do it. I don't want to."
"Thomas," you say. Your voice is soft. It is the only thing that is real. "Stop."
"I can't," he says. "The power. It is in me. It is in the eye. It is in you. I can't stop it."
He raises the knife. His hands are shaking. The blade glints in the dark. It is a sliver of light. It is a sliver of death.
You look at the necklace. You look at the eye. You understand then. The eye is not a tool. It is a mirror. It reflects the user. It amplifies the user. If you use it for good, it is good. If you use it for evil, it is evil. The Abbot is not evil. He is afraid. He is old. He is tired. He wants to save the world. But he is using the wrong way. He is using fear. He is using violence.
The line between good and evil is not a line. It is a blur. It is a mist. It is the fog outside.
You stand up. You walk toward Thomas. You do not reach for a weapon. You reach for his hand. You take the knife. You pull it from his grip.
"Give it to me," you say.
Thomas looks at you. His eyes are wide. They are full of terror. They are full of hope.
"I can't," he says. "He will know. He will punish me. He will punish you."
"I know," you say.
You hold the knife. The metal is cold. It is heavier than the necklace. You look at the Abbot. He is standing in the doorway. He is watching. His face is stone.
"Do it," he says. "Kill him. Kill the corruption. Kill the weakness. You are the Warden. You are strong."
You look at Thomas. You look at the Abbot. You look at the knife. You look at the necklace. The eye is burning. The whisper is screaming.
*Kill him. Kill them. Save yourself. Save the world. You are the monster. You are the savior. You are both. You are neither.*
You raise the knife. You point it at the Abbot.
"No," you say.
The Abbot blinks. "What?"
"I will not kill," you say. "I will not sacrifice. I will not be the weapon."
"You are failing," he says. "You are weak."
"I am human," you say. "I am not a tool. I am not a gate. I am a person."
You turn to Thomas. You put the knife in his hand. You wrap your fingers around his. You force his grip to tighten.
"Drop it," you say.
"I can't," he says.
"Drop it," you say. Your voice is loud. It is not a command. It is a plea. It is a prayer. "Drop it, Thomas. Let it go. Let the power go. We are not the ones who must decide. We are not the ones who must judge."
The Abbot steps forward. "You will doom us all."
"Maybe," you say. "Maybe we will burn. Maybe we will fall. But we will not be monsters. We will not be cruel. We will be human. And that is enough."
You look at the necklace. You pull it off. You hold it in your hand. The obsidian eye is dark. It is dead.
You crush it.
The glass breaks. The pieces cut your hand. Blood drips onto the stone floor. It is red. It is bright. It is life.
The whisper stops. The dark fades. The air changes. It is still. It is quiet. But it is clean.
The Abbot stares at you. His face is slack. He looks small. He looks old. He looks lost.
"What have you done?" he asks.
"I have let go," you say. "I have let go of the power. I have let go of the fear. I have let go of the lie."
Thomas drops the knife. It clatters on the floor. He falls to his knees. He is weeping. He is breathing. He is alive.
The doors of the chapel open. The morning light comes in. It is grey. It is pale. But it is light.
The fog is lifting. The oaks are visible. The stone path is clear.
You are still the Warden. But you are no longer the gate. You are the keeper of the threshold. You do not open it. You do not close it. You just stand there. You watch. You wait.
The Abbot walks past you. He does not look back. He walks into the light. He walks into the world.
You stay in the chapel. You stay in the dark. You stay with Thomas. You hold his hand. You hold your bleeding hand.
The pain is sharp. The pain is real. The pain is yours.
You are not the monster. You are not the savior. You are the shadow. You are the silence. You are the space between the words.
And that is enough.
You close your eyes. You listen. There is no whisper. There is only the wind. There is only the birds. There is only the life.
You are free. You are bound. You are both.
The story ends. The story begins. The fog lifts. The light comes. You are still here. You are still you.
And that is enough.
