The Distant Promise
The letter lay on the table. It was thick. It was black. It was final.
Elias stood by the window. The fog pressed against the glass. It smelled of wet stone and old iron. He held the seal in his hand. The wax was cold. It broke under his thumb. A sharp crack. A clean break.
He had served the Order for thirty years. He had kept the silence. He had kept the line. Now the line was gone.
"Did you sign it?"
The voice came from the shadows. It was low. It was rough. It was familiar.
Elias did not turn. "I did not."
"Then why is it here?"
"Because they sent it."
"Who sent it?"
"Them. The ones who watch. The ones who know."
The man stepped into the light. It was Silas. Silas was old. Silas was tired. Silas was a witness. He had watched Elias for decades. He had seen the blood. He had seen the fear. He had seen the love.
"You look well, Elias."
"I look dead."
"You look free."
"Freedom is a lie. It is a door that opens onto a pit. I chose the pit. I chose it long ago."
Silas sat down. The chair creaked. The wood groaned. It was an old chair. It was a faithful chair.
"Tell me what you know."
"I know too much. That is the curse. Knowledge is a weight. It crushes the spine. It breaks the heart. I wanted to save her. I wanted to save the cause. I wanted to believe that the darkness was a shield. It was not a shield. It was a cage."
"And she?"
"Is gone. She is gone into the dark. She is gone into the void. She did not fight. She accepted. She accepted the truth. She accepted the end."
Silas nodded. He nodded slowly. His face was a mask. His eyes were dry.
"I saw her. I saw her at the edge. I saw her step over. I saw her smile. It was a sad smile. It was a kind smile. It was the last kindness I would ever see."
Elias turned. He looked at Silas. His eyes were hard. His eyes were cold.
"You did nothing."
"I am a witness. I do not act. I only see. I only remember. I am the stone. I am the witness stone. I hold the memory. I hold the pain. I do not let it go."
"And you let me fall."
"I let you choose. I let you be you. I let you be the man you are. I let you be the monster you became."
"I am not a monster."
"You are a soldier. Soldiers are monsters. They are tools. They are broken tools. They are discarded tools. You were a good tool. You were a sharp tool. But you are broken now."
The room was silent. The fog moved outside. It moved like a ghost. It moved like a breath.
Elias walked to the desk. He opened the drawer. He took out the pistol. It was heavy. It was cold. It was black.
"What are you going to do?" Silas asked.
"I am going to finish the job."
"Which job?"
"The job that started this. The job that killed her. The job that killed us."
"You cannot go back. Time is a river. It only flows one way. You cannot swim upstream. You cannot stop the current. You can only drown."
"I will try. I will try to stop it. I will try to save what is left. I will try to burn it down. If I cannot save it, I will destroy it. I will not leave anything for them. I will not leave anything for the dark. I will leave only ash. I will leave only silence."
Silas stood up. He walked to the door. He paused. He looked back.
"Be careful, Elias. The dark is hungry. It eats the brave. It eats the good. It eats the loving. It eats everything. It leaves only the void."
"Then I will feed it. I will feed it my soul. I will feed it my life. I will feed it my pain. I will feed it my love. I will feed it everything."
Silas opened the door. The wind rushed in. It was cold. It was sharp. It bit at their faces.
"Goodbye, Elias."
"Goodbye, Silas."
Silas left. The door closed. The lock clicked. The sound was final. The sound was absolute.
Elias was alone. He was truly alone. The walls were bare. The air was still. The shadows were long. The shadows were deep.
He looked at the letter again. He held it up to the light. The ink was black. The ink was wet. The ink was fresh.
It was a command. It was an order. It was a death sentence.
It said: *Retreat. Surrender. Forget.*
It said: *You are no longer needed. You are no longer wanted. You are no longer part of the Order.*
It said: *You are a mistake. You are an error. You are a flaw.*
It said: *Cleanse the flaw.*
Elias laughed. The laugh was dry. The laugh was bitter. The laugh was empty.
They did not understand. They never understood. They thought love was a weakness. They thought loyalty was a chain. They thought knowledge was a burden.
They were wrong. Love was a fire. Loyalty was a shield. Knowledge was a sword.
He had held the sword. He had wielded the sword. He had cut the darkness. He had cut the lies. He had cut the truth.
Now he would cut himself.
He loaded the pistol. The sound was loud. The sound was clear. The sound was final.
He put the gun to his temple. The metal was cold. The metal was hard. The metal was real.
He closed his eyes. He saw her. He saw her face. He saw her smile. He saw her eyes.
Her eyes were bright. Her eyes were clear. Her eyes were full of light.
She was not in the dark. She was in the light. She was in the sky. She was in the stars.
She was safe. She was free. She was whole.
Elias was not safe. Elias was not free. Elias was not whole.
Elias was broken.
He pulled the trigger.
The sound was loud. The sound was sharp. The sound was final.
The room was silent. The fog was still. The light was dim. The dust was settling.
The body fell. The body hit the floor. The body made a sound. The sound was heavy. The sound was dull. The sound was real.
The blood spread. The blood was red. The blood was warm. The blood was life.
The blood was leaving. The life was leaving. The soul was leaving.
The soul was rising. The soul was floating. The soul was light.
The soul was moving. The soul was going. The soul was leaving the body.
The soul was leaving the room. The soul was leaving the house. The soul was leaving the earth.
The soul was going up. The soul was going through the roof. The soul was going through the walls.
The soul was going into the sky. The soul was going into the fog. The soul was going into the dark.
The dark was waiting. The dark was hungry. The dark was ready.
The dark took him. The dark swallowed him. The dark digested him.
The dark was full. The dark was satisfied. The dark was content.
The letter lay on the table. The letter was still. The letter was quiet. The letter was done.
The seal was broken. The seal was cracked. The seal was shattered.
The promise was broken. The promise was void. The promise was dead.
The distance was closed. The distance was gone. The distance was nothing.
The story was over. The story was done. The story was finished.
The words were written. The words were ink. The words were blood.
The words were truth. The words were lie. The words were both.
The reader saw. The reader felt. The reader knew.
The reader was alone. The reader was still. The reader was quiet.
The reader was part of it. The reader was part of the dark. The reader was part of the light.
The reader was part of the promise. The reader was part of the break. The reader was part of the end.
The story was not over. The story was continuing. The story was in the reader.
The story was in the mind. The story was in the heart. The story was in the soul.
The story was alive. The story was breathing. The story was beating.
The story was Elias. The story was Silas. The story was her.
The story was you.
The fog cleared. The sun rose. The light came. The light was bright. The light was warm. The light was new.
The house was empty. The house was quiet. The house was still.
The grass grew. The flowers bloomed. The trees swayed. The wind blew.
The world turned. The world moved. The world lived.
The dead were gone. The dead were forgotten. The dead were buried.
The living remained. The living continued. The living endured.
The promise was kept. The promise was broken. The promise was transformed.
The truth was seen. The truth was known. The truth was accepted.
The end was a beginning. The end was a start. The end was a new life.
The story ended. The story began. The story was eternal.
