The Pale Tale
You wake in the cold.
The office is empty. The fluorescent lights buzz. It is a low, sick sound. You are sitting at your desk. Your hands are still. They are locked around a piece of paper. The paper is white. The ink is black. The letters are sharp. They are not your handwriting. They are the company logo. It is a stylized eye. It is looking at you.
You do not remember falling asleep. You remember the meeting. You remember the silence. You remember the weight of the room. You remember the words. They were small words. They were precise words. They cut deep.
You open your eyes. The light is too bright. You blink. The world is hard. The edges are sharp. You look at your hands. They are clean. They are pale. They are not trembling. This is wrong. You should be trembling. You are not.
You stand up. The chair scrapes against the floor. The sound is loud. It echoes. You walk to the window. The city is below. It is gray. The cars are moving. The people are moving. They do not see you. You are behind glass. You are safe. You are alone.
You look back at the desk. The paper is still there. You pick it up. The paper feels cold. It feels dead. You read the words.
*Termination of Employment. Effective Immediately. Violation of Trust Protocol 4. Breach of Confidentiality. Misrepresentation of Data.*
You read it again. Your mouth is dry. Your tongue feels like sand. You do not understand. You did not breach. You did not misrepresent. You checked the numbers. You checked them three times. You checked them with a colleague. You checked them with the software. You checked them with your heart.
You put the paper down. You sit back in the chair. The chair is cold. The air is cold. The silence is loud.
Your phone rings.
You look at it. It is Daniel.
You pick it up. You put it to your ear. You do not speak. You breathe.
"Are you there?" Daniel asks. His voice is thin. It is tight. He is afraid.
"I am here," you say. Your voice is flat. It is empty.
"Did you read it?" he asks.
"Yes."
"Listen. I need you to listen to me. We made a mistake. A big mistake. The system flagged it. The algorithm flagged it. It thought you altered the logs. It did not check the manual override. I told them. I told them you did not do it. I told them you are clean. I told them you are the best we have. But they did not listen. They did not want to listen. They wanted to cut the loss. They wanted a scapegoat. It was not you. It was the system. It was them. Not you."
You close your eyes. You see the meeting. You see the faces. You see the head of the department, Mr. Sterling. He looked at you. He did not look at you. He looked through you. He looked at the data. He looked at the loss. He looked at the money.
"I know," you say.
"Do you?" Daniel asks. "Do you believe me? I am telling you the truth. I am your friend. I have been your friend for five years. I have backed you. I have covered for you. I have fought for you. I am still fighting for you. But they have already sent the email. They have already locked the doors. They have already erased your access. You are out. You are done. I am sorry. I am so sorry. I tried. I tried so hard."
You want to scream. You want to throw the phone. You want to break the glass. You do not. You sit still. You breathe in. You breathe out.
"Thank you, Daniel," you say.
"You are welcome. I will call you. I will help you find another job. I will vouch for you. I will not let them bury you. I will not let them win. You are not a criminal. You are a professional. You are a good person. Remember that. Do not let them make you a monster. Do not let them make you a ghost. You are real. You are here. You are strong. Okay? Okay? I have to go. Goodbye."
The line goes dead.
You hold the phone. The screen is black. It is a mirror. You see your face. You look old. You look tired. You look broken.
You look at the paper again. The logo. The eye. It is watching you. It is judging you. It is saying you are guilty. It is saying you are bad. It is saying you are nothing.
You fold the paper. You put it in your pocket. You pick up your bag. You pick up your coat. You walk to the door. You do not look back. You open the door. You step out.
The hallway is long. The floor is shiny. It reflects the lights. It reflects you. You walk. Your shoes click. Click. Click. Click.
You pass the break room. You pass the conference room. You pass the cubicles. They are empty. The chairs are pushed in. The computers are off. The desks are clean. There is no trace of life. There is no trace of you.
You reach the elevator. You press the button. The doors open. You step in. The doors close. You are alone.
You ride down. The numbers change. Ten. Nine. Eight. Seven. Six. Five. Four. Three. Two. One.
The doors open.
You step out. The lobby is bright. The glass doors are wide. The street is outside. The noise rushes in. It is loud. It is chaotic. It is alive.
You walk out. You walk down the steps. You walk into the street. The air is cold. It hits your face. It is sharp. It is real.
You walk. You do not know where you are going. You do not know where you are. You walk past the shops. You walk past the cafes. You walk past the people. They look at you. They see a man. They see a suit. They see a face. They do not see the paper in your pocket. They do not see the eye. They do not see the betrayal.
You stop. You are in front of a park. It is small. It is quiet. The trees are bare. The leaves are brown. The ground is dry.
You sit on a bench. The wood is cold. It bites into your back. You put your head in your hands. You do not cry. You do not shake. You are still. You are empty.
A dog barks. A child laughs. A car honks. The world continues. It does not stop for you. It does not care about you. It moves. It spins. It turns.
You take out the paper. You look at it. The ink is fading. It is blurring. The words are becoming shapes. The shapes are becoming light. The light is becoming nothing.
You realize something.
You realize you have been watching yourself for years. You have been looking at the screen. You have been looking at the data. You have been looking at the numbers. You have been looking at the rules. You have been looking at the expectations. You have been looking at what you are supposed to be.
You have never looked at what you are.
You have been a mirror. You have reflected the company. You have reflected the system. You have reflected the fear. You have reflected the doubt. You have been a mirror of their anxiety. You have been a mirror of their greed. You have been a mirror of their coldness.
And now the mirror is broken.
You look at the shards in your mind. They are sharp. They are jagged. They cut you. But they are not you. They are glass. They are metal. They are ink. They are not flesh. They are not bone. They are not blood.
You are not the data. You are not the code. You are not the error. You are the person who holds the paper. You are the person who breathes. You are the person who feels the cold.
You stand up. The bench is left behind. It is empty. You are full.
You walk to the edge of the park. You look at the city. It is vast. It is indifferent. It is beautiful. It is terrible.
You do not run. You do not hide. You do not fight. You do not conquer. You do not win.
You let go.
You let go of the need to be right. You let go of the need to be trusted. You let go of the need to be seen. You let go of the need to be safe.
You drop the paper.
It falls. It flutters. It lands on the ground. The wind picks it up. The wind takes it. The wind carries it away.
You watch it go. You watch it disappear into the gray. You watch it vanish.
You do not look for it. You do not chase it. You do not mourn it.
You turn away. You face the street. You face the world.
You take a step.
Your foot touches the pavement. It is solid. It is real. It is there.
You take another step.
Your heart beats. It is slow. It is steady. It is yours.
You walk. You walk into the crowd. You walk into the noise. You walk into the life.
You are alone.
But you are not lonely.
You are part of the flow. You are part of the movement. You are part of the breath of the city. You are one drop in the ocean. You are one note in the song. You are one spark in the dark.
You do not need to be the center. You do not need to be the eye. You do not need to be the truth.
You just need to be.
You walk.
The sun is coming out. It is pale. It is soft. It is warm. It touches your face. It dries the cold from your skin. It lights up the street. It lights up the people. It lights up you.
You are seen.
Not by the company. Not by the system. Not by the mirror.
You are seen by the light.
You are seen by the air.
You are seen by the ground.
You are seen by yourself.
You smile.
It is small. It is quiet. It is real.
You walk on.
The street stretches out before you. It is long. It is open. It is free.
You do not know where you are going.
You do not need to know.
You are going.
You are alive.
You are here.
You are enough.
The wind blows.
The city breathes.
You breathe with it.
You are part of it.
You are safe.
You are home.
Not in a house.
Not in a job.
Not in a title.
In your body.
In your breath.
In your step.
In your silence.
In your soul.
You walk.
The day is bright.
The day is new.
The day is yours.
You take a deep breath.
You hold it.
You release it.
You walk.
The shadows are long.
The light is low.
The world is turning.
You are turning with it.
You are part of the turn.
You are part of the life.
You are part of the story.
Not the pale tale.
The true tale.
The living tale.
The breathing tale.
The you tale.
You walk.
You are free.
You are whole.
You are here.
