The Distant Threshold
The lantern in my hand is not mine, and yet it burns with a heat that I feel in the marrow of my bones, a fire that has no fuel, no wick, no glass, only a pale, trembling light that refuses to die, refusing to acknowledge the centuries of dust and silence that have settled upon the streets of Oakhaven, a town that exists in the amber of memory, preserved in the resin of a time when the air was thick with the scent of woodsmoke and unwashed wool, where the cobblestones were worn smooth by the feet of men who have long since returned to the earth, leaving behind only the echo of their laughter and the heavy, oppressive weight of their judgments, which still hang in the air like fog, clinging to the eaves of the houses, seeping into the cracks of the doorframes, whispering their accusations to anyone who dares to walk these streets at this hour, when the moon is a pale eye watching over the sleeping town, and the only sound is the distant, rhythmic thumping of the river against the stone embankment, a heartbeat that belongs to no one, a pulse that keeps the town alive even as it suffocates it, and I am the one who walks, I am the one who carries the light, not because I chose to, but because I was born with it, or perhaps because I stole it, or perhaps because it was given to me as a punishment, a mark of my sin, a brand that cannot be washed away, no matter how hard I scrub, no matter how many times I wash my hands in the cold, clear water of the river, the stains remain, the guilt remains, the feeling that I am an intruder in my own life, a ghost haunting the halls of my own flesh, and I know, I have always known, that I am the one they are looking for, not because of what I did, but because of what I am, a creature of the night, a thing that does not belong in the day, a shadow that has taken on the shape of a man, and yet I walk, I walk with the lantern, I walk through the streets that know me, that have seen me grow from a boy into a man, that have watched me make my mistakes, that have seen me fall, and now they watch me rise, or do they think I am rising, or do they see only the fall, the endless, spiraling fall into the pit of my own making, and I hear the voices, they are always there, they are part of the fabric of the town, woven into the very stones, they whisper, they hiss, they scream, they cry out in the night, they say I am a thief, I am a liar, I am a monster, they say I took something that was not mine, they say I broke the rules, they say I am unworthy of the light, but I do not listen, or perhaps I do, I listen to every word, I absorb every accusation, I let them sink into me like water into dry earth, and I carry them, I carry the weight of their words, I carry the weight of their eyes, I carry the weight of their silence, and it is heavy, it is so heavy that I can barely lift my feet, barely lift my arms, barely lift the lantern, and yet I do, I keep walking, I keep the light burning, because if I let it go, if I let the darkness take me, then I am truly gone, and I am not ready to be gone, I am not ready to be forgotten, I am not ready to be erased from the memory of this town, even if that memory is only a curse, even if that love is only a chain, I am not ready to die, not yet, not until I have found the one who can see me, the one who can look past the mask, past the guilt, past the shadow, and see the man beneath, the man who is trying, the man who is suffering, the man who is afraid, and I know he is here, I know he is watching, I know he is the only one who understands, the only one who has carried a weight like this, the only one who has walked a path like this, and I call out to him, I call out into the night, I call out to the darkness, I call out to the silence, and I wait, I wait for the answer, I wait for the recognition, I wait for the moment when the truth is revealed, not by a judge, not by a jury, not by the town, but by me, by the one who knows, by the one who has always known, and then it happens, the moment comes, the air changes, the light shifts, the shadows lengthen, and I see him, I see him standing at the end of the street, I see him holding the other half of the lantern, I see him looking at me, I see him smiling, I see him nodding, and I know, I know with a certainty that shakes me to my core, that he is the one, that he is the witness, that he is the judge, that he is the savior, and I run to him, I run with all my strength, I run with all my heart, I run with all my soul, and I throw myself into his arms, I throw myself into the light, I throw myself into the truth, and I feel the weight lift, I feel the burden gone, I feel the chains break, I feel the silence shatter, and I hear the voices, they are no longer whispering, they are no longer hissing, they are no longer screaming, they are singing, they are singing a song of release, a song of freedom, a song of redemption, and I join them, I add my voice to theirs, I add my light to theirs, and together we burn, together we shine, together we rise, and the town of Oakhaven, the town of stone and shadow, the town of memory and curse, is transformed, it is changed, it is saved, by the light, by the truth, by the choice, by the decision to let go, by the decision to be seen, by the decision to be free, and I am free, I am finally free, I am no longer the prisoner, I am no longer the sinner, I am no longer the shadow, I am the light, I am the truth, I am the man, and I stand, I stand in the center of the square, I stand in the light, I stand in the truth, and I look out, I look out at the town, I look out at the people, I look out at the world, and I see them, I see them clearly, I see them for who they are, I see them for what they have done, I see them for what they are capable of, and I forgive them, I forgive them for their ignorance, I forgive them for their fear, I forgive them for their cruelty, I forgive them for their silence, and I forgive myself, I forgive myself for my mistakes, I forgive myself for my sins, I forgive myself for my pain, and I let go, I let go of the past, I let go of the guilt, I let go of the fear, I let go of the need for approval, I let go of the need for love, I let go of the need for meaning, and I am left, I am left with nothing, I am left with only the light, I am left with only the truth, I am left with only myself, and it is enough, it is more than enough, it is everything, it is the only thing that matters, it is the only thing that is real, it is the only thing that is true, and I smile, I smile at the light, I smile at the truth, I smile at myself, and I walk, I walk away, I walk into the night, I walk into the future, I walk into the unknown, I walk into the dark, but I am not afraid, I am not alone, I am not lost, I am found, I am home, I am free.
