The Wistful Throne

The hall smells of stale ale and iron.

You stand at the center. The firelight catches the brass on your chest. It glints. It is bright. It is too bright. Around you, the men of the Iron Guard drink. They laugh. The sound is like grinding stones. They do not look at you. They look through you. They look at the fire. They look at their own hands. You are the captain. You are the shield. But tonight, you are a statue.

Edward sits across from you. He holds a glass of dark rum. He does not drink. He watches you. His eyes are wet. They are not from the smoke. They are from something else. Something old. Something that has eaten him from the inside out.

"Drink, Thomas," he says.

His voice is soft. It cuts the air.

"I cannot," you say.

"Then break it."

He looks at the glass. Then he looks at you. "Break the glass, Thomas. Break it like you break the enemy. Show them you are still here. Show them you are not the ghost."

You look at the glass. It is fragile. It is thin. It holds the dark liquid. It holds the reflection of the fire. It holds the reflection of your face. Your face is wrong. The skin is tight. The eyes are sunken. You are fifty. You feel eighty. The years have not passed. They have piled up. They have buried you.

You do not touch the glass.

"You are tired," Edward says.

"I am full," you say.

"You are empty," he corrects. "I see it. I have always seen it. You carry the weight. You carry the blood. You carry the names of the dead. You carry them in the brass. You carry them in the steel. But you cannot carry them in your heart. Your heart is a locked room. I have the key. I have always had the key. And I will not turn it."

The room is silent. The laughter has stopped. The men are watching. They are waiting. They are hungry. They want to see the captain fall. They want to see the iron bend.

"Who is the traitor?" you ask.

The question hangs in the air. It is heavy. It is sharp.

Edward smiles. It is a sad smile. It is a tired smile. "I am," he says.

The words land. They do not bounce. They sink. They sink into the floor. They sink into the silence.

"I am the traitor," he repeats. "I sold the plans. I sold the fort. I sold the city. I did it for gold. I did it for survival. I did it because I was afraid. I was afraid of the dark. I was afraid of the cold. I was afraid of you."

He looks at you. His eyes are clear. They are steady. "I am afraid of you, Thomas. I have always been afraid of you. You are too strong. You are too pure. You are too much. I am not. I am small. I am weak. I am human. And I wanted to be like you. I wanted to be the steel. But I am the rust."

You do not move. You do not breathe. The fire pops. A spark flies up. It dies in the smoke.

"Why tell me now?" you ask.

"Because the time is up," he says. "The enemy is coming. The gates are open. The walls are breached. They will be here in an hour. In an hour, the city is gone. And you will die. You will die alone. You will die with the weight. And I cannot let you die with the weight. I have carried it with you. I have carried it for twenty years. I have carried it in my hands. I have carried it in my blood. I have carried it in my sleep. I cannot carry it any longer. I must give it to you. I must let you put it down."

You look at him. You look at the glass in his hand. You look at the brass on your chest.

"You do not have my permission," you say.

"I do not need your permission," he says. "I need your release."

He stands up. He walks toward you. His steps are slow. They are deliberate. He does not look at the other men. He does not look at the fire. He looks only at you.

"Stop," you say.

Your voice is low. It is quiet. It is the voice of a man who has forgotten how to speak.

"I am stopping," he says. "I am stopping the wheel. I am stopping the clock. I am stopping the war. Not by fighting. But by dying. Not by killing. But by surrendering. I surrender to you. I surrender to the truth. I surrender to the end."

He reaches out. He touches the brass on your chest. His hand is cold. It is rough. It is the hand of a man who has held a knife. It is the hand of a man who has held a child. It is the hand of a man who is dying.

"Break it," he whispers.

You look at the brass. You look at his hand. You look at the room. The men are standing. They are silent. They are afraid. They are watching. They are waiting.

You know what he wants. You know what he has wanted for years. You know what you have wanted for years. You want to be free. You want to be light. You want to be nothing. You want to be the empty space where the weight was.

But you are a warrior. You are a shield. You do not break. You do not yield. You do not surrender. You endure. You hold the line. You hold the pain. You hold the truth. You hold the secret. You hold the guilt. You hold the love. You hold the hate. You hold the fear. You hold it all.

"I will not break it," you say.

Edward’s face crumbles. It is not a scream. It is a sigh. It is a long, low sigh that goes on and on. It is the sigh of a man who has run out of breath.

"Then I will," he says.

He pulls the knife from his belt. It is short. It is dark. It is sharp. He holds it in his right hand. He holds it in his left. He brings it together. He snaps the blade. It breaks. The shards fly. One hits your cheek. One hits the floor. One hits the fire.

He drops the hilt. He drops the blade. He steps back.

"I am free," he says.

He walks to the door. He opens it. The cold air rushes in. It is the smell of snow. It is the smell of death. It is the smell of the end.

"Thomas," he says. He does not look back. "Do not follow me."

He steps out. The door closes. The cold rushes in. The fire dies. The room goes dark.

You stand in the dark. You stand in the silence. You stand in the cold.

You touch your cheek. There is blood. It is warm. It is red. It is alive.

You touch the brass. It is cold. It is hard. It is unbroken.

You are still here.

You are the shield.

You are the weight.

You are the end.

The men move. They are silent. They are fast. They are ready. They are the Iron Guard. They are the last line. They are the wall.

You pick up the sword. It is heavy. It is old. It is yours.

You walk to the door. You open it.

The snow is falling. The city is burning. The enemy is coming.

You step out.

You do not run. You do not fight. You do not speak.

You walk.

You walk into the dark.

You walk into the cold.

You walk into the end.

You are the wistful throne.

You are the empty place.

You are the thing that remains.

You are the thing that breaks.

You are the thing that holds.

You are the thing that dies.

You are the thing that lives.

You are the thing that is.

You are Thomas.

You are the shield.

You are the weight.

You are the end.

You are the beginning.

You are the silence.

You are the sound.

You are the light.

You are the dark.

You are the truth.

You are the lie.

You are the love.

You are the hate.

You are the fear.

You are the hope.

You are the despair.

You are the joy.

You are the sorrow.

You are the anger.

You are the peace.

You are the war.

You are the peace.

You are the end.

You are the beginning.
