The Wistful Silence

The rain hit the stone. It drummed. It hissed. It did not stop. I stood by the window. The glass was cold. It burned my face. I felt the chill. I felt the weight. The tower stood. It was old. It was mine. Not mine. It belonged to the King. It belonged to the Law. I am a servant. I am a shadow. The shadow knows. The shadow waits.

"You are late, Ser Rowan."

The voice came from the dark. It was dry. It was sharp. Master Thorne sat at the table. He wore black. He wore gray. He was a withered thing. He was a stone. I bowed. My knees ached. I had walked in the mud. I had walked in the cold.

"I apologize, Master."

"Apologies are for peasants." He tapped the table. *Click. Click.* "I need a name. I need a face. I need a soul to break."

I looked at him. I saw his eyes. They were flat. They were dead. But they saw everything. I felt a pull. It was deep. It was in my gut. It was not fear. It was hunger. I wanted to serve. I wanted to be good. I wanted to be clean. The tower loomed. It pressed down. The walls were thick. The walls were strong. The walls were a cage.

"Who is it?" I asked.

Thorne smiled. It was a thin smile. It did not reach his eyes.

"Thomas Bradshaw."

The name hit me. A stone in the chest. I knew it. I knew him. We had trained together. We had bled together. He was good. He was kind. He helped the poor. He fed the dogs. He was my friend.

"Why?" I asked.

"Because he is a traitor." Thorne’s voice was low. It was a whisper. It was a hiss. "He speaks against the King. He speaks against the Order. He must die. You will do it."

I shook my head. My hands shook. "No. I cannot. He is my brother in arms."

Thorne stood up. He was small. He was frail. But he was a storm. He walked to me. He put a hand on my shoulder. It was cold. It was heavy.

"You are not his brother. You are my sword. You are the hand of justice. Do you remember the vows? Do you remember the oath? You pledged your life. You pledged your soul. You are nothing without the Order. You are dust without the Law."

I looked at the floor. The stone was cold. The stone was hard. I thought of Thomas. I thought of his laugh. I thought of his hands. I thought of the garden. The roses were red. The blood was red. It is all the same.

"I need time," I said.

"You have until midnight. If he is not dead, you are. We are both dead. The tower falls. The secret leaks. You understand?"

I nodded. I could not speak. My throat was tight. My throat was iron. Thorne left. The door closed. The lock turned. *Click.* I was alone. I was with the dark. I was with the cold.

I walked to the edge. I looked down. The city was a sea of lights. The lights were stars. The stars were false. I felt the pull. It was strong. It was primal. It was love. Not love for a woman. Not love for a child. Love for the cause. Love for the silence. Love for the end. I wanted to be part of it. I wanted to be the hand that ends the pain. I was wrong. I knew I was wrong. But I felt it. It was a fire. It was a flood. It could not be stopped.

I went to my room. I locked the door. I sat in the chair. I waited. The clock ticked. *Tick. Tick. Tick.* It was a heartbeat. It was a countdown. I took out the dagger. It was sharp. It was clean. It was beautiful. I held it up. The light caught the blade. It sparkled. It sang. I wanted to sing. I wanted to scream. I did nothing. I watched.

Midnight came. The bell rang. *Boom.* It shook the walls. It shook my bones. I had not moved. I had not killed him. I sat there. I was a stone. I was a statue. The silence was loud. The silence was heavy. I felt the weight of my failure. I felt the weight of my life. It was too much. It was too heavy. I could not carry it. I had to give it up.

I opened the door. I walked to the gate. I walked into the rain. The rain was cold. The rain was wet. I walked to the square. The square was empty. The square was dark. I saw a figure. It was Thomas. He was there. He was waiting. He held a lantern. The light was soft. The light was warm.

"Rowan?" he said.

I did not speak. I walked to him. I stopped. I looked at him. He looked at me. He was afraid. I saw the fear in his eyes. I saw the hope. He thought I had come to save him. He thought I had come to join him. He was wrong. I was wrong. We were both wrong.

"I am here to kill you," I said.

His face fell. The light in his eyes died. He looked at the dagger. He looked at me. He did not run. He did not fight. He stood still. He was brave. He was good. He was my friend.

"Why?" he asked.

"I do not know," I said. "I do not know. I am a tool. I am a piece of wood. I am a stone. I have no will. I have no self. Only the Order. Only the Law."

He shook his head. "You are not a stone, Rowan. You are a man. You have a heart. You have a soul. Do not let them steal it. Do not let them make you a ghost."

I raised the dagger. My hand shook. My heart pounded. I could feel the blood in my veins. I could feel the life in me. It was hot. It was bright. It was alive. I looked at him. I saw his fear. I saw his trust. I saw his love. It was a mirror. It showed me who I was. It showed me who I wanted to be.

I lowered the dagger.

Thomas blinked. He did not move. He looked at me. He looked at the blade. He looked at my face.

"Rowan?" he whispered.

"I cannot do it," I said.

He stepped forward. He touched my hand. He took the dagger. He held it. He looked at me. He smiled. It was a sad smile. It was a kind smile.

"You are free," he said.

I felt a shock. It was a jolt. It was a release. The weight lifted. The cage opened. The walls fell. I was not a stone. I was not a tool. I was a man. I was alive. I was free. But I was alone. I was naked. I was empty.

"Go," I said. "Go now. They are coming. Thorne is coming. If they find you, you die. If they find me, I die. But I am already dead. You must live."

He nodded. He turned. He ran. He ran into the dark. He ran into the rain. He disappeared. I watched. I waited. The lights came. The footsteps came. The door opened. Thorne stood there. He was wet. He was cold. He looked at me. He looked at the empty square.

"Where is he?" Thorne asked.

"He is gone," I said.

Thorne stepped inside. He looked at me. He looked at the floor. He saw the drop of blood. It was mine. I had cut my hand. I had not realized. The blood was red. The blood was life.

"You failed," Thorne said.

"I did not fail," I said. "I chose. I chose to be human. I chose to be alive. I chose to love. Even if it kills me. Even if it destroys me. I chose."

Thorne stared at me. He saw the change. He saw the fire. He saw the truth. He raised his hand. He held a pistol. The barrel was black. The barrel was cold.

"Then you die," he said.

I did not flinch. I did not close my eyes. I looked at him. I looked at the gun. I felt the calm. I felt the peace. I felt the end.

"Shoot," I said.

He fired. The sound was loud. The sound was sharp. It was a bang. It was a burst. It was a silence. I felt the heat. I felt the pain. It was not pain. It was release. It was flight. I fell. I hit the stone. The stone was cold. The stone was hard. The rain fell on my face. The rain was warm. The rain was kind.

I looked up. The sky was gray. The sky was light. The tower stood. The tower was strong. The tower was a cage. But I was not in it. I was out. I was free. I was gone. I was a ghost. I was a memory. I was a silence.

The silence was deep. The silence was wide. The silence was mine. I closed my eyes. I listened. I heard the rain. I heard the wind. I heard the heart. It beat. It beat. It stopped. I was gone. I was here. I was everywhere. I was nowhere. I was the silence. I was the space. I was the breath. I was the end.

The rain stopped. The sun came out. The light was bright. The light was gold. The light touched my face. It was warm. It was soft. It was good. I smiled. I did not know why. I did not care. I was happy. I was free. I was dead. I was alive. It did not matter. It was all the same. The stone was cold. The soul was hot. The end was near. The end was now. I was at peace. I was at rest. I was at home. I was in the silence. The silence was wistful. The silence was full. The silence was everything.
