The Faded Bouquet

You stand at the threshold. The door is heavy oak. It smells of varnish and old rain. You are leaving.

The garden outside is a ruin. The roses are black. The stems are snapped. They lie on the wet grass like broken bones. You look at them. You do not feel. You feel only the cold. It seeps into your marrow.

Behind you, the palace breathes. The walls are stone. The torches burn low. The air is thick with the scent of extinguished candles and fear. You are a scholar. You have spent your life in libraries. You have dusted the spines of dead men’s thoughts. You have traced the ink of forgotten kings. Now you are running.

They say you are a traitor. They say you sold the secrets of the court to the enemy. They say you opened the gates. They say you let the fire in.

You did not. You closed them. You bolted them. You held the lever until your hands bled. You told them no. You told them, *stay out*. You told them, *this is not yours to take*.

But they needed a scapegoat. The King is dead. His head is on a pike. The Queen is gone. Her room is empty. The dust motes dance in the shafts of pale light. They are waiting for you.

You turn back. You look at the garden one last time. The broken roses. The shattered petals. They are everywhere. They are in the mud. They are in the air. They are in your mouth. You taste copper. You taste earth.

You remember her.

Elara.

Her name is a song. It is a sharp thing. It cuts. It heals. It is both.

She was not a queen. She was a woman. She had ink on her fingers. She had eyes like deep water. She looked at you and saw the man beneath the scholar’s robe. She saw the fear. She saw the love.

You loved her. It was not a choice. It was a fact. It was as certain as gravity. As certain as death.

You held her face in your hands. Her skin was cool. Her breath was warm. You whispered to her. You told her you would save the books. You told her you would save the history. You told her you would save *us*.

She smiled. It was a sad smile. It was a knowing smile.

*You cannot save it*, she said. *You can only watch it break.*

You did not believe her. You believed in order. You believed in structure. You believed that if you catalogued everything, if you pinned every memory to the page, you could hold it together. You could keep it from falling apart.

You were wrong.

The order was a lie. The structure was a cage.

You walk forward. Your shoes are wet. The mud clings to you. It is heavy. It is real.

The palace looms behind you. It is a beast. It is a tomb. It has eaten the King. It has eaten the court. It is hungry for you.

You think of the archives. The long rows of shelves. The silence. The dust. You think of the manuscripts you saved. The scrolls you hid. You wrapped them in oilcloth. You sealed them in lead boxes. You buried them in the cellar.

You saved the words. You did not save the world.

Is that enough?

You do not know. You do not care.

You walk on. The road is long. It winds through the forest. The trees are tall. They are dark. They whisper. They judge.

You are alone. You are free.

Or are you?

Freedom is a cold thing. It is a sharp thing. It cuts deep. It does not heal. It only exposes.

You look at your hands. They are stained. They are dirty. They are human.

You remember the night. The fire. The screams. You were in the library. You held the door. You held it shut. The heat was a wall. The smoke was a snake. You coughed. You choked. You saw the faces in the flames. You saw the King. You saw the Queen. You saw Elara.

She was standing in the doorway. She was holding a candle. Her face was calm. Her eyes were wet.

*Go*, she said. *Run.*

You wanted to stay. You wanted to take her hand. You wanted to die with her. You wanted to burn with the books. You wanted to become ash.

But she pushed you. She pushed you hard. She pushed you out.

The door slammed. The lock clicked. The sound was final. The sound was a gunshot.

You ran. You ran until your lungs burned. You ran until your legs failed. You ran until the world was dark.

You have been running ever since.

You stop. You sit on a stone. The stone is cold. It is hard. It is still.

You look at your hands again. You see the ink. It is under your nails. It is in your veins. It is part of you.

You are a scholar. You are a keeper of things. You are a vessel.

But you are also a man. You are a lover. You are a survivor.

The sun rises. It is pale. It is weak. It does not warm. It only shows. It shows the ruin. It shows the path. It shows the truth.

You stand up. You brush the mud from your clothes. You walk on.

You do not look back. You cannot. If you look back, you will break. If you look back, you will die.

You must live. You must carry the weight. You must carry the memory. You must carry the ghost.

The ghost is Elara. The ghost is the palace. The ghost is the broken roses.

They are with you. They are always with you.

You walk into the mist. The mist is thick. It is white. It is silent.

You are lost. You are found.

You are free.

The cost is high. The price is paid.

You paid with your home. You paid with your love. You paid with your innocence.

You are lighter now. You are hollow. You are empty.

But you are here.

You are alive.

The road continues. It does not end. It only turns. It only climbs.

You climb. Your breath is shallow. Your heart is fast.

You think of the books. They are safe. They are buried. They are waiting.

One day, someone will dig them up. One day, someone will read them. One day, the truth will be known.

But that is not your day. That is not your life.

Your life is now. Your life is the road. Your life is the walk.

You walk. You breathe. You exist.

The mist clears. The world appears. It is gray. It is vast. It is indifferent.

You are small. You are dust. You are a speck.

But you are moving. You are going forward.

You are free.

And it hurts.

It hurts so much.

You smile. It is a small smile. It is a bitter smile.

You continue.
