The Distant Temple
The fog rolls in at dawn. It tastes of salt and rust. You walk the pier. The wood is slick. Your boots slip. You grip the railing. The iron bites your palm. You are here. You are always here. The city behind you is a blur of grey shapes. It does not matter. What matters is the water. It is black. It is deep. It knows your name. It has always known your name.
You are Elias. You were Thomas. You are neither. You are the space between. You carry a satchel. It is heavy. Inside is a book. The pages are soft. They are warm. They breathe. You touch the cover. It hums. A low vibration. A warning. You know why you are here. You know what you seek. The Temple. It is not a building. It is a state of mind. It is a place where the mind breaks and reforms. You have read the texts. You have studied the rites. You believe you are ready. You are wrong. You are always wrong. That is the first lesson.
The ferry comes. It is small. It is wooden. The driver is a man with eyes like stones. He does not speak. He takes your coin. He points to the boat. You step in. The planks creak. The fog thickens. The city fades. The water rushes past. It is silent. There is no sound. Only the lap of the waves. Only your own heart. It beats fast. It beats hard. It is afraid. You tell it to stop. It does not listen.
The boat stops. There is no dock. There is no shore. There is only a door. It stands in the mist. It is made of bone. It is white. It is clean. You look at it. It looks at you. The driver is gone. You are alone. You walk to the door. Your hand shakes. You reach out. You touch the wood. It is warm. It is soft. It yields. You push. The door opens.
You step through.
The world changes. The air is still. The light is gold. It is thick. It coats your skin. You see a path. It winds upward. The ground is glass. It reflects the sky. The sky is blue. It is too blue. It is wrong. You walk. Your feet make no sound. The silence is heavy. It presses against your ears. You hear a voice. It is soft. It is sweet. It is close.
"Welcome, Elias."
You turn. A woman stands there. She is tall. She is thin. Her hair is white. Her eyes are dark. She smiles. It is a sad smile. It is a kind smile. You recognize her. You do not know how. You have seen her in dreams. You have seen her in books. She is the Guide. She is the Keeper. She is the Trap.
"You have come for the truth," she says. Her voice is like wind. It is like water. It is like time.
"I have come for the Temple," you say. Your voice is small. It is weak. It is yours.
"Same place," she says. "Same thing."
She turns. She walks ahead. You follow. The path is long. It is steep. The glass under your feet is cold. It is sharp. You feel the pain. It is distant. It is real. The woman does not look back. She walks with grace. She walks with purpose. She does not hurry. She does not stop. You struggle. You breathe hard. Your legs burn. Your lungs ache. You want to stop. You want to sit. You want to rest. You do not. You keep walking.
The path ends. You are at a cliff. Below is the void. It is black. It is infinite. You look down. You see your face. It is old. It is tired. It is broken. You look up. The woman is gone. There is only a stone. It is smooth. It is round. It sits on the edge. You walk to it. You sit. The stone is warm. It is alive. You put your hand on it.
The world dissolves.
You are in a room. It is white. It is empty. There is a table. There is a chair. There is a man. He sits in the chair. He is bound. He is blindfolded. He is you. The other you. The real you. The one who stayed behind. The one who believes. The one who hopes.
"Look," says a voice. It is your voice. It is not your voice. It is the voice of the book.
You look. You see the past. You see your father. He is drinking. He is shouting. He is breaking things. You see your mother. She is crying. She is hiding. She is afraid. You see your friends. They are laughing. They are mocking. They are pointing. They are calling you a fool. They are calling you a liar. They are calling you a ghost.
You see the work. You see the years. You see the libraries. You see the archives. You see the dust. You see the ink. You see the obsession. You see the hunger. You wanted to know. You wanted to understand. You wanted to fix it. You wanted to save it. You wanted to be right.
The vision changes. You see the future. You see the city. It is burning. It is falling. It is dying. You see the people. They are screaming. They are running. They are dying. You did not stop it. You could not stop it. You were too busy looking for the Temple. You were too busy seeking the truth. You were too busy being right.
The vision changes again. You see the woman. The white-haired woman. She is standing in the fire. She is smiling. She is holding the book. She is reading it. She is eating it. She is digesting it. She is becoming it.
"Is this the truth?" you ask. Your voice is loud. It echoes. It shakes the room.
"No," says the voice. "This is the cost."
You look at the man in the chair. The blindfolded man. The real you. He is trembling. He is weeping. He is begging. "Let me go," he says. "I don't know what I did. I don't know what I am. Let me go."
You look at the man. You look at the fire. You look at the woman. You understand. The Temple is not a place. The Temple is a sacrifice. The Temple is a death. To know the truth is to kill the self. To see the void is to lose the light. You have sought the Temple. You have found it. It is you. It is always you.
You stand up. Your legs are strong. Your mind is clear. The fog is gone. The light is bright. It is blinding. It is beautiful. It is terrible. You look at the man in the chair. You look at his eyes. They are open. The blindfold is gone. He sees you. He sees the truth. He sees the end.
"Who are you?" he asks.
"I am the price," you say.
You walk to the table. There is a knife. It is long. It is silver. It is sharp. You pick it up. It is heavy. It is warm. It is yours. You look at the man. He is afraid. He is proud. He is you. You love him. You hate him. You pity him. You understand him. You forgive him.
You raise the knife.
The room shakes. The walls crack. The light breaks. The fire roars. The woman screams. It is a song. It is a prayer. It is a curse. You are the curse. You are the prayer. You are the song.
You bring the knife down.
The pain is white. The pain is silent. The pain is nothing.
You fall.
You wake up.
You are on the pier. The fog is thick. The water is black. The sun is rising. It is red. It is small. It is cold. You are sitting on the wood. Your satchel is empty. The book is gone. You reach for it. You feel nothing. You look at your hand. It is clean. It is dry. It is yours.
The ferry is gone. The door is gone. The woman is gone. The Temple is gone. You are here. You are alone. You are free. You are broken.
You stand up. Your legs are stiff. Your body is cold. The city is waking up. The streets are empty. The shops are closed. The birds are singing. It is a normal day. It is a quiet day. It is a beautiful day.
You walk to the end of the pier. The water is calm. It is still. It reflects the sky. The sky is grey. It is flat. It is empty. You look at your reflection. You see your face. It is young. It is fresh. It is new. It is not your face. It is the face of a stranger. It is the face of a ghost. It is the face of a man who has seen the truth.
You remember the man in the chair. You remember the pain. You remember the fire. You remember the woman. You remember the book. You remember the knowledge. It is gone. It is gone. It is gone.
You feel a hollow space in your chest. It is a hole. It is a void. It is a temple. You did not find the Temple. You became the Temple. You are the container. You are the vessel. You are the empty room.
You look at the water. You see a shape. It is dark. It is moving. It is coming closer. You look closer. It is a face. It is your face. It is smiling. It is waving. It is sinking. It is gone.
You turn away. You walk back to the city. Your steps are light. Your mind is clear. You do not remember why you came. You do not remember what you sought. You do not remember who you were. You only know that you are here. You only know that you are free.
The city is loud. It is busy. It is alive. People are walking. Cars are driving. Voices are calling. You blend in. You are one of them. You are no one. You are everyone. You are the fog. You are the water. You are the silence.
You walk past a cafe. You smell coffee. You smell bread. You smell life. You stop. You look at the window. You see a woman. She is white-haired. She is thin. She is smiling. She is drinking tea. She is reading a book. She looks up. She looks at you. She nods. She smiles. It is a sad smile. It is a kind smile.
You nod back. You smile. It is a real smile. It is a small smile. It is a quiet smile.
You walk on. The sun is higher. The fog is thinner. The air is crisp. The world is real. The world is solid. The world is here. You are here. You are alive. You are free.
You do not know why you are happy. You do not know why you are sad. You do not know why you are afraid. You do not know why you are calm. You do not know why you are you. You do not need to know. You do not want to know. You have paid the price. You have made the sacrifice. You have found the truth.
The truth is that there is no truth. The truth is that you are free. The truth is that you are alone. The truth is that you are enough.
You walk into the city. The doors open. The lights turn on. The day begins. You are part of it. You are nothing. You are everything. You are the temple. You are the prayer. You are the silence.
The fog lifts. The sun shines. The water glitters. The world turns. You walk. You live. You breathe. You are here.
