The Wistful Saga
The road broke the world in half. I walked on the western edge. The grass was high. It whispered. My sister, Elara, walked ahead. She carried the box. The box was heavy. It was not wood. It was stone. Cold stone. I touched her arm. She did not look back.
"Stop," she said. Her voice was dry. Like dead leaves.
"Why?" I asked.
"It is too heavy."
I looked at the box. It was small. A shoebox. Black. No nails. No seams.
"I can carry it," I said.
"No."
She walked on. The sun was low. The light was red. We were far from home. Home was a ghost. We were exiles. The land here was wild. It had no name. The trees were twisted. They watched us. I felt their eyes.
I was not strong. My lungs burned. The air was thin. I coughed. Blood on my lip. I wiped it away. Elara did not care. She only cared for the box. She hugged it to her chest. Her face was pale. Her eyes were dark. She had not slept. I had not slept. We had been walking for days. The map was useless. The compass spun.
"Elara," I said.
She stopped. She turned. Her face was a mask.
"What?"
"Let me help."
"No."
"I am your brother. I am all you have."
Her jaw tightened. "You are a burden. Your sickness. It is a stain."
I flinched. The words cut deep. But I said nothing. I stood still. The wind blew. It tore at my clothes. I was cold. I was hungry. But I was loyal. I had promised. I had sworn. When Father died, I made the vow. I would carry her. I would keep her safe. Even if she hated me. Even if the world was against us.
The forest thickened. The light died. We were in a valley. Mist rose from the ground. It touched our ankles. It was cold. It smelled of rot. Elara shuddered. She looked at the box. Her hands shook.
"I cannot open it," she whispered.
"You do not have to," I said.
"I must. It is waking up."
I frowned. "What do you mean?"
She did not answer. She kept walking. The mist swallowed us. I could not see her face. I only heard her footsteps. Clop. Clop. Clop. The rhythm of her steps. The rhythm of my heart.
We found a cave. It was dark. It was dry. We sat down. Elara placed the box on the ground. She sat beside it. She did not speak. I stared at her. She stared at the void. The darkness was absolute. I felt afraid. I felt small.
"Elara," I said.
"Silence," she said.
I waited. The silence was loud. It screamed. I thought of our mother. She had laughed. She had sung. She was gone. We were gone. I thought of the life we lost. The fire. The smoke. The screams. I had saved Elara. I had saved the box. I had lost everything else.
"Why do you hate me?" I asked.
Her eyes opened. They were wet. "I do not hate you. I am afraid of you."
"Of me?"
"Of what I did to you."
I did not understand. I shook my head.
"You are not well," she said. "You are changing."
I touched my face. My skin felt tight. My bones felt brittle. I was sick. The fever had taken me. But I was still me.
"I am your brother," I said again. "Always."
Elara looked at the box. "It is listening to you."
I laughed. It was a dry sound. A cough. "It is a box. It is empty."
Elara stood up. "It is not empty."
She lifted the box. She held it over her head. Her muscles strained. Her face turned red.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"I must put it back," she said.
"Put it back where?"
"The place where it belongs."
I stood up. I walked toward her. I reached for her arm. "Elara, stop. It is too heavy. You will hurt yourself."
She shook me off. Her strength was surprising. She was frail. But her will was iron.
"You are weak," she said. "Your sickness makes you weak. You cannot carry the truth."
The truth. What truth? I did not know. I only knew the pain in my chest. I only knew the love in my heart. I loved her. I loved her with a fire that consumed me. I would die for her. I would kill for her. I would burn the world for her.
She walked away. She went into the dark. I followed. I could not stay. I could not let her go. The cave was deep. The air was stale. I heard her breathing. It was fast. It was ragged.
"Elara!" I called.
No answer.
I walked faster. I tripped. I fell. My leg screamed. I crawled. I saw a light. It was blue. It pulsed. It was the box. It glowed. The stone was transparent. Inside, there was a light. A soft, blue light. It moved. It breathed.
I approached it. Elara was kneeling. She had opened the lid. The light spilled out. It touched her face. She looked peaceful. She looked beautiful. But she looked dead. Her eyes were closed. Her mouth was open.
"Elara," I whispered.
She did not move.
I touched her hand. It was cold. Ice cold.
I looked at the box. The light was fading. The blue turned to gray. Then to black. The stone cracked. It shattered. The pieces fell to the ground. They dissolved. Like dust. Like ash.
I stared at the empty space. There was nothing. No monster. No ghost. No treasure. Just air. Just silence.
I looked at Elara. She was gone. She had vanished. Only her clothes remained. They lay on the ground. Empty. Like shells.
I stood up. My legs shook. I looked around. The cave was empty. The mist was gone. The sun was rising. It was morning. I was alone.
I walked out of the cave. The world was bright. The birds sang. The grass was green. It was beautiful. It was terrible.
I realized then. I had been wrong. I had misunderstood. I thought I was saving her. I thought I was protecting her. But I was the disease. My obsession with her was the poison. My need to hold on was the cage. I had trapped her in my grief. I had trapped her in my memory. I had kept her alive in my mind while her body withered.
The box had not been a container. It had been a mirror. It reflected my sickness. It reflected my selfish love. I had wanted her to suffer with me. I had wanted her to share my pain. I had wanted to be the savior. The hero. But I was only a prisoner. And she was my jailer.
I looked at the place where she had stood. I felt a pain. A deep, hollow pain. But it was different. It was clean. It was light. I let it go. I let go of the anger. I let go of the blame. I let go of the need to be needed.
I walked on. The road was long. The sun was warm. I did not look back. I did not carry anything. My hands were empty. My heart was empty. But it was free.
I reached the edge of the forest. The trees ended. The open plain began. It stretched out to the horizon. It was vast. It was silent. I was small. I was alone.
I sat down. I closed my eyes. I listened to the wind. I listened to my breath. I was alive. I was breathing. I was here.
I thought of Elara. I thought of her face. I thought of her voice. I smiled. It was a sad smile. But it was real. I would carry her memory. But I would not carry her body. I would not carry her pain. I would let her rest. I would let her go.
I stood up. I walked toward the sun. The light was golden. It touched my face. It warmed my skin. I felt the heat. I felt the life.
I was not a hero. I was not a victim. I was a man. A broken man. But I was free.
The journey was over. The exile was over. I had found my way. Not home. But to myself.
I walked. The steps were slow. The steps were steady. The world turned. The day ended. The night came. The stars appeared. They were bright. They were cold. But they were beautiful.
I slept under the sky. I dreamed of nothing. I woke with the dawn. I walked on. The road was endless. But I was not afraid. I had nothing left to lose. I had nothing left to gain. I had only the road. And the wind. And the silence.
I was free.
