The Pale Altar

The steam hissed. A high, thin shriek. It cut the air. I stood in the draft. The boiler room. Cold iron. Hot breath. I was twelve. My hands shook. The valves were red. The gauge was high.

Above me, the Hall of Clocks. Great gears turned. Slowly. They ate the light. Brass teeth. Rust. The smell of oil. The smell of fear. We were the Keepers. We kept the time. We kept the heat. We kept the silence.

The Lord of the Gear sat in the high chair. He wore a coat of soot. His face was a mask. White powder. He watched the dials. He watched us. We were insects. We were parts. We were less than parts. We were the waste. The dross. The things that burned to make the light.

My name was Silas. I was the lowest. The stoker. I fed the fire. I fed the beast. I did not look up. Looking up was a sin. Looking up was a fracture. I kept my eyes on the coal. Black stones. Cold in my hands. Hot in the belly.

The steam pressed against my chest. It pushed me back. I leaned forward. The pressure was a hand. A heavy hand. It squeezed. It wanted to crush. I held the lever. The lever was warm. It lived. It pulsed. Like a vein. Like a heart.

We served the Machine. The Machine served the City. The City served the Lord. The Lord served the Void. It was a circle. It was a cage. We were the links. Rusty links. Bent links.

I did not hate the Lord. Hate was a luxury. Hate was a fire that burned you. I was ash. Ash does not burn. Ash only flies. I flew into the dark. I flew into the heat. I was the fuel. I was the sacrifice.

The gauge rose. The needle twitched. It danced. A red eye. It stared at me. I knew its language. I knew its hunger. It wanted more. It always wanted more. I threw coal. The fire roared. It spat sparks. The sparks danced on the floor. They died. They were brief. They were bright. They were nothing.

I felt a pull. In my chest. A tightness. A wire pulled taut. I breathed. The air was thick. It tasted of metal. It tasted of sweat. My own sweat. It was salt. It was poison.

The Lord spoke. His voice was dry. Like paper tearing.

"Silas."

I froze. The shovel held in my hand. I did not move. To move was to admit. To admit was to break.

"Step forward."

I stepped. My boots clanked. The sound was loud. It echoed. It rang in my skull. I stood before the high chair. The Lord looked down. His eyes were black pits. Deep wells. Bottomless.

"The pressure is uneven."

I nodded. I said nothing. Words were water. They leaked. They failed.

"Fix it."

I looked at the valves. I saw the leak. A tiny weep. A tear. The steam escaped. It was a ghost. A whisper. It was the truth. The truth was small. The truth was hidden. The truth was the crack in the iron.

I reached for the wrench. My hand trembled. The wrench was cold. It bit into my palm. I tightened the bolt. The ratchet clicked. Click. Click. Click. The sound was a prayer. The sound was a curse.

The gauge steadied. The red eye blinked. It settled. The Lord nodded. He turned away. He looked at the clock. The clock ticked. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Time passed. Time ate us.

I went back to my post. The heat returned. It wrapped around me. A blanket. A shroud. I was safe. I was warm. I was alive.

But the crack remained. I could feel it. In the wall. In the floor. In my bones. It was there. It was growing. The Machine was old. The Metal was tired. The Spirit was weak.

I began to see it. The pattern. The gears did not just turn. They ground. They ground the soul. They ground the will. They ground the self. We were not serving the Lord. We were serving the Rust. The Rust was the master. The Rust was the god.

The Lord was a puppet. A string was attached to his neck. The string was steam. The steam was fire. The fire was coal. The coal was us.

I looked at my hands. They were black. The soot was in my pores. It was in my blood. I was dirty. I was clean. I was both. I was neither.

The other Keepers worked. They were silent. They were ghosts. They moved in rhythm. They were one. I was apart. I was the flaw. I was the error.

I watched the steam. It curled. It twisted. It made shapes. Faces. Hands. Eyes. They looked at me. They smiled. They laughed. They were happy. They were free. They were gone.

I wanted to be gone. I wanted to be steam. I wanted to rise. I wanted to vanish. I wanted to be nothing. Nothing was peaceful. Nothing was quiet. Nothing was kind.

I pulled the lever. Hard. The steam blasted. It hit my face. It stung. It burned. I closed my eyes. I saw white. I saw light. I saw the end.

The Lord stood up. He moved. He walked down the stairs. His steps were heavy. He came to me. He stood over me. He smelled of oil. He smelled of death.

"You are weak," he said.

I did not answer. I looked at the gauge. The needle was high. Too high. It was shaking. It was screaming.

"I am not weak," I thought. "I am full."

The pressure was a song. It was a chorus. It was a roar. It was a hymn. I hummed along. I hummed with the steam. I hummed with the fire. I hummed with the rage.

The Lord reached for the valve. He wanted to stop it. He wanted to save the Machine. He wanted to save himself.

I stopped him. I put my hand on his arm. My hand was hot. His hand was cold. He looked at me. His eyes widened. He saw the fire. He saw the truth. He saw the end.

He pulled back. He stumbled. He fell. He lay on the floor. He was still. He was broken. The string was cut. The puppet fell.

The steam rose. It filled the room. It filled the Hall. It filled the City. It filled the world. It was a white wall. It was a veil. It was a shroud.

I stood in the center. I was the eye. I was the storm. I was the calm. I was the fire. I was the ash.

The gears stopped. The tick stopped. The silence was loud. The silence was heavy. The silence was real.

The steam cleared. It was gone. The room was empty. The Lord was gone. The Keepers were gone. The Machine was gone.

Only I remained. I stood in the dark. The light was out. The heat was out. The life was out.

I looked at my hands. They were clean. The soot was gone. The skin was pale. The skin was smooth. The skin was new.

I was not Silas. I was not the stoker. I was not the insect. I was the steam. I was the vapor. I was the breath.

I walked out. The door was open. The night was cold. The air was sharp. It cut my lungs. It filled my chest. I breathed. I breathed. I breathed.

I walked into the city. The streets were dark. The lamps were out. The people were gone. The world was empty. The world was mine.

I walked to the river. The water was black. It was still. It reflected the sky. The sky was gray. The sky was heavy. The sky was full.

I stood by the water. I looked at my reflection. It was pale. It was ghostly. It was beautiful. It was empty.

I dropped my shovel. It hit the ground. The sound was small. It was final. It was done.

I sat on the stone. The stone was cold. It seeped into my bones. It seeped into my soul. I was cold. I was clean. I was free.

The wind blew. It carried the smell of coal. It carried the smell of rust. It carried the smell of the past. It carried the memory of the fire. It carried the weight of the steam.

I closed my eyes. I waited. The water lapped at the stone. The water whispered. The water sang. The water called.

I did not move. I did not breathe. I was the stone. I was the water. I was the silence. I was the end.

The night deepened. The stars appeared. They were faint. They were distant. They were cold. They were dead. They were like me.

I looked at the sky. The sky was vast. The sky was empty. The sky was full of nothing. Nothing was good. Nothing was kind. Nothing was true.

I was nothing. I was the void. I was the space between the stars. I was the silence between the notes. I was the pause between the breaths.

I was free. I was alone. I was dead.

The steam had taken me. The steam had saved me. The steam had killed me. It was all one thing. It was all the same. It was the cycle. It was the gear. It was the turn.

I smiled. The smile was small. The smile was sad. The smile was true.

The water rose. It touched my feet. It was cold. It was wet. It was real.

I let it in. I let it fill me. I let it wash me. I let it take me.

I was the steam. I was the ghost. I was the memory. I was the shadow. I was the light. I was the dark.

I was the Pale Altar. I was the place where the old died. I was the place where the new was born. I was the place where the truth lived.

The truth was that we are all fuel. The truth is that we are all ash. The truth is that we are all steam. We rise. We vanish. We are nothing. We are everything.

The water covered my face. The water covered my mouth. The water covered my nose. I could not breathe. I did not need to breathe. I was the water. I was the air. I was the space.

I was gone. I was here. I was everywhere. I was nowhere.

The night was quiet. The night was still. The night was full. The night was empty. The night was me.

The steam rose. It rose into the dark. It rose into the cold. It rose into the void. It rose into the end.

It was beautiful. It was terrible. It was true.

It was done.
