The Distant Affair

The rain fell on the cobblestones like a curse. You walk through the city of Ashworth. The stone is wet. The air is cold. You carry the book. It is heavy. It is old. The leather cover is cracked. You hold it tight against your chest. Your name is Elias. You are a scholar. You study the old texts. You know the words. You know the history. But you do not know the truth. Not yet.

The castle looms above the town. It is a place of power. The walls are high. The windows are narrow. You climb the steps. Your legs ache. You are tired. You have been walking for days. The road was long. The rain did not stop. You reach the gate. The guard looks at you. His eyes are cold. He does not speak. He steps aside. You enter.

Inside, the hall is vast. The torches burn low. The shadows dance on the stone floor. You see the King. He sits on the throne. He is old. His face is a map of pain. He watches you. He does not smile. He waits. You bow. Your head touches the floor. You do not look up. You are afraid. You are a scholar. You are not a soldier. You are not a king. You are just a man with a book.

"Speak," the King says. His voice is rough. It sounds like grinding stone.

You stand up. You open the book. You show him the pages. The ink is faded. The words are clear. You read the first line. Your voice is quiet. The hall is silent. The only sound is the rain on the windows.

"Is this true?" the King asks. He leans forward. His hand rests on the arm of the throne.

"I do not know," you say. "The text is ambiguous. The meaning is lost to time. I can only translate the words. I cannot judge the intent."

The King’s face hardens. "You are a coward," he says. "You hide behind the text. You hide behind the past. We are in the present. The enemy is at the gate. The fire is coming. We need a weapon. We need a sacrifice."

You look at the book. You look at the King. You feel a chill. You remember your wife. Her name is Clara. She died last winter. The fever took her. You held her hand. You watched the light leave her eyes. You promised her you would find the truth. You promised her you would bring back the heart of the city.

"I will find it," you say.

The King points to the window. "Go to the garden. The rose bush is there. It is white. It is the last of its kind. Cut it down. Bring me the stem. I will use it to open the seal. The magic will flow. We will survive."

You nod. You turn and walk out of the hall. The air outside is colder. The rain has stopped. The clouds are breaking. The moon is visible. It is a thin sliver of light. You walk to the garden. The path is slick. The grass is wet. You see the rose bush. It stands in the center of the garden. It is white. It is perfect. It glows in the moonlight. It looks like a ghost.

You approach it. Your hand trembles. You reach for the stem. It is thin. It is brittle. You remember Clara. She loved roses. She planted this one. She said it was a symbol of peace. She said it was a symbol of hope. Now the King wants it destroyed. He wants to use its essence for war. He wants to use it for power.

You cut the stem. The sound is sharp. It snaps in the cold air. The petals fall. They land on the wet grass. They look like snow. You hold the stem. It is cold. It is dead. You bring it back to the hall.

The King takes the stem. He smiles. It is a cruel smile. He places it on the altar. He lights the torch. The fire spreads. The stem burns. The smoke rises. It smells of ash and loss. The King raises his hand. The air shimmers. The magic comes. It is dark. It is hungry. It flows into the King. He stands up. He is taller. He is stronger. His eyes glow with a yellow light.

"Thank you," he says. His voice is different now. It is deeper. It is louder. "You have saved us. You have given us the power to crush the enemy."

You look at the altar. The stem is gone. There is only ash. You feel a emptiness in your chest. It is a hollow place. It grows. It spreads. You look at the King. He is no longer human. He is a vessel for the magic. He is a monster.

"You lied," you say. Your voice is steady. You do not know why. You feel calm. "The book does not say that. The text says the sacrifice must be willing. It must be given in love. It must be pure. You forced it. You stole it."

The King laughs. It is a terrible sound. "Love is a weakness. Power is the only truth. I am the King. I take what I need."

He turns to you. His eyes are yellow. He points at you. "And now, you must join me. Your mind is sharp. Your knowledge is valuable. You will serve the magic. You will be my advisor. You will help me rule."

You step back. Your heart beats fast. You look at the door. It is closed. The guards are there. They hold their swords. They watch you. They wait for the King’s command.

"I will not serve you," you say.

The King’s face twists. "You have no choice. The magic is in you now. It touched you when you cut the rose. You are bound to me."

You look at your hands. They are shaking. You feel a pull in your head. It is a sharp pain. It is a burning sensation. The magic is inside you. It is trying to take you over. It is trying to make you obey. You fight it. You close your eyes. You think of Clara. You think of her face. You think of her voice. You think of the promise you made.

You open your eyes. You look at the book. It is in your hand. You do not remember taking it. You look at the King. He is walking toward you. He is moving slowly. He is enjoying the hunt.

You open the book. You read the last line. You have never read it before. You have always missed it. It is on the final page. It is small. It is written in a different hand.

"The heart of the city is not in the rose. It is in the one who holds the truth. To save the city, the scholar must give up the truth. He must forget. He must let go. The magic feeds on memory. To break the bond, you must lose what you love most."

You understand. The truth is the only thing that holds you back. The truth is the anchor. If you forget, the magic will leave. If you forget, the King will lose his power. But if you forget, you will lose Clara. You will lose her memory. You will lose her love. You will be empty.

You look at the King. He is close now. His hand is outstretched. His fingers are long. They are black. He smells of smoke and death.

You close the book. You hold it to your heart. You whisper her name. Clara. You say it over and over. You feel the words leaving you. They fade. They become smoke. You feel the pull in your head weaken. You feel the burning stop.

The King screams. He falls to his knees. The yellow light in his eyes dies. He collapses. The guards rush to him. They are afraid. They do not know what to do.

You stand there. You are alone. The hall is silent. The rain starts again. It falls on the windows. It sounds like a whisper.

You walk to the door. You open it. The night is cold. The air is fresh. You walk out into the garden. The rose bush is gone. There is only a patch of earth. The stem is ash. The petals are gone.

You walk out of the castle. You do not look back. You walk down the hill. The town is below. The lights are dim. The people are sleeping. They do not know what happened. They do not know that they are saved. They do not know that you paid the price.

You walk until your legs give out. You sit on a stone wall. You look at the sky. The moon is full now. It is bright. It is cold.

You try to remember Clara. You try to see her face. You try to hear her voice. You reach for her. You grab for her. But there is nothing. There is only air. There is only silence.

You forgot. You forgot everything. You forgot her name. You forgot her face. You forgot your love. You forgot your pain. You are empty. You are free.

The King is dead. The magic is gone. The city is safe. But you are broken. You are a hollow shell. You have no past. You have no future. You have only the present. And the present is empty.

You stand up. You walk into the town. You do not know where you are going. You do not know who you are. You are just a man. You are just a scholar without a book. You are just a ghost in the rain.

The rain falls. It washes the street. It washes the stone. It washes the memory of the rose. It washes the memory of the King. It washes the memory of you.

You walk on. The night is long. The road is dark. You do not look back. You cannot look back. There is nothing to see. There is only the road. And the rain. And the silence.

You are alone. You are free. You are lost.

The story is over. The truth is gone. The sacrifice is made. The redemption is empty. It is a victory without joy. It is a peace without rest. It is a life without love.

You close your eyes. You feel the cold. You feel the wet. You feel the weight of your own body. You feel nothing else.

You walk into the dark.
