The Wistful Show

The hall breathes.

It is a breath of old stone and newer gold. You stand at the edge of the dais. The chandeliers drip light like honey.

Look down.

You hold the seal.

It is cold. It is heavy. It is a square of obsidian, polished to a mirror finish. In its center, a single word is etched. *Truth*.

No. Not a word. A symbol. A glyph. A trap.

You are the Archivist.

The court looks at you.

They do not see you.

They see the seal.

The Queen sits high. Her face is a mask of porcelain. She waits. The air is thick. It tastes of dust and ambition.

You lift the seal.

Your hand shakes.

Why does it shake?

You know what it holds.

Everyone knows what it holds.

But no one knows the cost.

That is the secret.

That is the curse.

"Speak, Archivist," the Queen says.

Her voice is silk over steel.

"I speak," you say.

Your voice is thin.

It is a wire stretched too tight.

The court leans in.

They want the story.

They want the tale of the fallen king.

They want the proof of the treason.

You have the proof.

You have the seal.

But the seal is alive.

It pulses against your palm.

A warm beat.

A wet beat.

It is not stone.

It is a heart.

It is the heart of the man you loved.

No.

Not the man.

The idea.

The memory.

You press the seal against your chest.

It burns.

"Show us," the Queen commands.

"I cannot."

The court murmurs.

A ripple of sound.

Like water in a dry well.

"The seal," the Queen says.

"It is locked."

"Open it."

"I will not."

The Queen’s eyes narrow.

They are black pits.

Deep.

Endless.

"You are dismissed."

The words hang in the air.

They are heavy.

They are final.

You step back.

Your heels click on the marble.

Each click is a heartbeat.

You walk away.

The hall watches you.

The chandeliers follow you.

The light is a chain.

You reach the door.

You push it open.

The night is cold.

It bites your face.

You step into the dark.

The door closes behind you.

The seal is still in your hand.

It beats.

Thump.

Thump.

Thump.

You walk through the gardens.

The hedges are tall.

They are black walls.

The moon is a pale eye.

It watches you.

You stop.

You look at the seal.

The glyph glows.

It is red.

It is bright.

It is blood.

You remember.

You remember the night it was given to you.

The King was dying.

His skin was gray.

His eyes were clear.

He held your hand.

He was weak.

He was strong.

"Keep it," he whispered.

"Keep the truth."

"You must not show it."

"Why?" you asked.

"Because they will kill you."

"They will kill us all."

"You must hide it."

"You must forget it."

You did not forget.

You kept it.

You kept the seal.

You kept the pain.

Now the pain is here.

It is in your hand.

It is in your heart.

You look at the garden wall.

There is a crack.

A small crack.

You kneel.

You press the seal against the stone.

The stone absorbs it.

The glow fades.

The heat cools.

You sit on the grass.

The grass is damp.

It is cold.

You feel the earth.

It is solid.

It is real.

You look at your hand.

Your hand is empty.

The seal is gone.

The pain is gone.

You are empty.

You are light.

You are free.

But you are wrong.

You are so wrong.

The seal is not gone.

The seal is you.

The truth is you.

You stand up.

Your legs are weak.

You walk back to the palace.

The doors are open.

The court is still there.

The Queen is still there.

She looks at you.

She smiles.

It is a cold smile.

It is a sharp smile.

"You have the seal," she says.

"No," you say.

"Yes."

"I gave it to the stone."

"The stone gave it to me."

The Queen waves her hand.

Two guards step forward.

They are tall.

They are silent.

They take your arms.

You do not fight.

You do not struggle.

You are tired.

You are so tired.

They drag you to the center of the hall.

The Queen stands.

She walks down the steps.

She stops before you.

She is close.

You can smell her perfume.

It is lilies.

It is death.

"Open the seal," she says.

"I have no seal."

"You have the knowledge."

"Knowledge is not a thing."

"Knowledge is a power."

"Power is a curse."

"Open it."

You close your eyes.

You breathe.

You reach inside.

You find the hole.

The place where the seal was.

It is empty.

It is dark.

But it is warm.

You open your eyes.

You look at the Queen.

You speak.

You do not use words.

You use the seal.

You use the memory.

You show her.

You show her the King.

You show her the night.

You show her the betrayal.

You show her the blood.

You show her the lie.

The Queen’s face changes.

The mask cracks.

The porcelain breaks.

Her eyes widen.

Her mouth opens.

She sees it.

She feels it.

The pain.

The truth.

The seal.

It is not in your hand.

It is in her mind.

It is in her soul.

She falls.

She falls to her knees.

The court screams.

The guards drop you.

The Queen is on the floor.

She is shaking.

She is crying.

She is broken.

The hall is silent.

The chandeliers sway.

The light flickers.

You stand in the center.

You are alone.

You are free.

But you are not happy.

You are not sad.

You are empty.

You look at your hands.

They are clean.

They are still.

You look at the Queen.

She is a ruin.

She is a ghost.

You walk away.

You walk to the door.

You walk out into the night.

The moon is still there.

It is still watching.

You walk into the dark.

You walk into the cold.

You walk into the silence.

You do not look back.

You do not think back.

You do not feel back.

You are the seal.

You are the truth.

You are the curse.

You are free.

And it is enough.

The night is deep.

The stars are bright.

You are small.

You are large.

You are nothing.

You are everything.

You walk.

You walk.

You walk.

The road is long.

The road is dark.

The road is yours.

You walk.

You walk.

You walk.

The seal is gone.

The truth is gone.

You are gone.

And yet.

And yet.

You are here.

You are here.

You are here.

The wind blows.

It is cold.

It is clean.

You breathe.

You live.

You die.

You live.

The story ends.

The story begins.

You walk.
