The Pale Garden
The house became a convalescent home in October 1939. Officers from Dunkirk arrived on stretchers and in silence, some with legs gone, some with everything intact except the particular quality of attention in their eyes — the way a man looks at a wall when he has already said goodbye to the rest of the world.
Eleanor stayed. She told her mother they could not leave — the house was too big, the roads too congested with refugees — but the truth was simpler and more humiliating: she was afraid to move, afraid that if she packed a single suitcase she would discover she had nowhere to go, that her degree in botany and her garden and her father's copy of Capability Brown were not a foundation but a costume, and she had been playing dress-up while the actual world burned.
She dressed up for the soldiers anyway. She learned to change bandages and boil water and mix tinctures from a first aid manual she read cover to cover until the pages went soft at the edges. She did not flinch when she had to cut away the fabric stuck to a wound. She held a man's hand while he died of gangrene in Room 7 and did not let go until his pulse had stopped counting.
This is useful*, she told herself. *This is what matters. But at night, when the house was quiet and the officers slept and the only sound was the dripping of a tap in the kitchen she had promised to fix, she would walk out into the garden and press her palms into the soil where the roses had been planted. The earth was cold and damp and full of worms — indifferent, patient, unchanged by any war.
*This is what matters*, she repeated. But the words felt thinner each time, like paint stretched too far over a bare wall.
