The Client's Game

The office smelled of stale cigarettes and rain. Leo sat behind his desk, the neon sign of the diner across the street blinking a rhythmic, sickly pink across his files. He was a man who dealt in secrets, and in Los Angeles, secrets were the only currency that never depreciated.

Then she walked in.

Elena. She wore a midnight-blue dress and a veil that hid half her face, but Leo would have known that silhouette in a blackout. Four years ago, she had vanished from his life without a word, leaving him with a broken heart and a drinking habit that almost cost him his license.

"I need your help, Leo," she said. Her voice was like velvet stretched over steel.

She wanted him to find a missing ledger—a book of accounts belonging to a dead senator. Leo knew the ledger was a death warrant, and he knew Elena was lying about why she wanted it. But as he looked into her eyes, he felt the old pull, the dangerous gravity of a woman who knew exactly how to dismantle a man.

For three days, they played a game of cat and mouse through the rain-washed streets of the city. Elena led him through a maze of high-society galas and waterfront warehouses, feeding him just enough truth to keep him hooked. Leo played the part of the dogged investigator, but he was actually the one being investigated.

On the final night, in a dimly lit apartment overlooking the Pacific, the truth came out. Elena hadn't hired him to find the ledger; she had hired him to be the fall guy. The ledger was already in her possession, and the "missing" person was a fabrication designed to lead the police straight to Leo's door.

"You always were too sentimental, Leo," she whispered, leaning in to kiss his cheek. The scent of her perfume was the smell of a trap closing.

As the sirens wailed in the distance, Leo didn't move. He looked at the woman he had once loved and realized that the Elena he remembered had died four years ago. This creature was something else—a predator who had used his nostalgia as a weapon.

He smiled, a cold, hard expression. He had already swapped the ledger for a fake.

"Check the bag, Elena," he said.

The look of shock on her face was the only payment he needed.
