The Hollow Guide (Expanded)

The bayous of Louisiana were a labyrinth of weeping willows and black water that seemed to swallow the very light of the sun. Silas and Elias, brothers bound by blood but divided by a lifelong rivalry, paddled their skiff through the muck. They were hunting the "Sunken Vault," a legendary cache of Spanish gold lost during a forgotten hurricane.

Their journey ended abruptly when their boat capsized in a sudden, violent whirlpool. They were dragged under, the current pulling them into a subterranean grotto. They were saved by a blind man who moved through the darkness with an eerie, fluid grace. He called himself the Curator.

"You are the first guests I've had in a century," the Curator whispered, his sightless eyes fixed on something behind them.

For days, the Curator guided them through the tunnels. He spoke of the gold, but he described it as a parasite that fed on the desires of those who found it. Silas and Elias didn't listen. They only saw the glimmer of gold coins embedded in the cavern walls.

As they reached the central chamber, the greed became a physical force. Silas saw a crown of gold and lunged for it, knocking Elias into a pit of caustic sludge. Elias screamed, clawing at the walls, but Silas only laughed, his eyes wide and vacant.

"I am the only one who deserves this!" Silas shrieked.

The Curator stepped forward, his voice now a booming resonance that shook the cavern. "The vault is not a place of wealth, but a place of reflection."

The gold began to melt, flowing across the floor like liquid mercury. It didn't form coins or crowns; it formed mirrors. Silas looked down and saw not a king, but a shriveled, wretched creature with a heart made of stone.

The Curator smiled, a thin, cold line. "You didn't find the gold, Silas. The gold found you."

The mirrors rose up, encircling Silas in a seamless sphere of polished metal. He was trapped in a world where he could see nothing but his own hideousness, forever. The Curator turned and vanished into the dark, leaving the same silence that had claimed so many before.

The silence was absolute, a heavy shroud that pressed against the eardrums. Silas screamed, but the mirrors only reflected the scream back at him, amplified and distorted. He began to pace the small circle, his footsteps echoing like the ticking of a clock counting down to an end that would never come. He remembered the way Elias used to laugh, the way they had shared a single blanket in the winter of their youth. Now, those memories were just more mirrors, showing him exactly what he had traded for a crown of mercury.

He tried to scratch his way out, but the metal was impenetrable. He grew thin, his skin clinging to his bones, until he looked exactly like the creature in the mirror. He realized then that the Curator had not trapped him; the greed had. He was the architect of his own prison, the jailer and the prisoner all in one.
