The Gilded Illusion
ACT I: THE VALET
The church of St. Bartholomew sat at the edge of Greenwich Village the way a painting sits at the edge of a room: as something that makes the room look more expensive than it actually is. Margaret Hale attended there on Wednesdays and Sundays because Wednesdays were quiet and Sundays were social, and between the two she had enough to manage.
She found the pouch in the vestry on a Wednesday, when the church was nearly empty and the only person besides her was Father Quinn, who was bent over a potted plant in the corner and had not noticed her enter. The pouch was velvet, dark green, tied with a silver cord. Inside, wrapped in tissue paper, were eight gold sovereigns. They were old, pre-1932, with the profile of George V facing left and the date stamped so faintly that you had to hold them up to the light to see it.
Margaret had never seen gold coins before. In her life, money had been an abstraction: a line in a checkbook, a number on a bank statement, a limit on a credit card. She had never held it, never felt its weight or its temperature. But here, in the quiet of a country church on a Wednesday afternoon, she was holding eight sovereigns that were worth perhaps four hundred pounds and felt like eight small suns.
She took them home in her handbag, wrapped in a handkerchief, and placed them on the mantelpiece in the drawing room, where they caught the afternoon light and threw it back in warm golden flashes. Charles, her husband, was in Geneva for a week on business. He would be gone until Saturday. The house was hers. The coins were hers to decide what to do with.
She did not decide. She looked at them for an hour and then went to bed and slept with the image of gold light on the mantelpiece behind her eyelids.
ACT II: THE VISITOR
Victor Crane lived at number 42 The Lane, two doors down from the Hales. He was a widower of about fifty, dressed always in dark colors that made him look like a shadow that had learned to walk. He had no children. He had no pets. He had a garden, which was full of roses that he never picked and a bench on which he sat every evening at seven o'clock and watched the street.
Margaret had spoken to him perhaps six times in the four years they had been neighbors. Each conversation had followed the same pattern: a greeting, a comment about the weather or the roses, and a sense, on Margaret's part, that something about him was slightly wrong, like a picture hung a degree off-level that your eye keeps trying to correct.
He visited her on the Friday afternoon that Charles was still in Geneva and the sovereigns were still on the mantelpiece. He came to borrow a cup of sugar, which was a lie. Margaret knew it was a lie because she had seen him in the village that morning buying a bag of sugar from the grocer. But she let him in because it was polite, and because her house felt too large and too quiet when Charles was away, and because six conversations with a man you barely know is enough to make you curious about what the seventh might be.
They sat in the drawing room. He asked about Charles. She said he was in Geneva. He asked about the roses. She said they were doing well. He asked if she needed anything. She said no. And then he looked at the mantelpiece.
"What are those?" he said.
Margaret turned. The sovereigns were still there, catching the light. She felt a sudden, irrational urge to cover them with a cloth.
"Nothing important," she said.
"They look like gold," Victor said.
"They're coins," Margaret said.
"From the church?"
She looked at him sharply. "How did you—"
"I've been to St. Bartholomew," Victor said. "It's a beautiful church. Very old. Very quiet. Good place for finding things."
He said it with a smile that was not unkind. It was the smile of a man who knows something you don't know and is deciding whether to tell you. He decided not to. He finished his tea. He left. He told her he would see her at the roses.
That night, Margaret counted the sovereigns. Eight. She placed them back on the mantelpiece. She closed the drawing room door and went to bed and dreamed of gold falling through the sky.
ACT III: THE DOUBT
The first shop was the florist on Lane End Road. Mrs. Patel, who ran it, was a woman of about sixty with kind eyes and hands that smelled of soil and rose oil. Margaret bought a bouquet of peonies for six pounds and handed Mrs. Patel a sovereign. Mrs. Patel took it, bit it between her teeth the way old shopkeepers do, and handed it back with a smile.
"Beautiful coin, madam," she said. "Where did you get it?"
"A church," Margaret said. And she left with her peonies and a five-pound note and a feeling in the back of her throat that she couldn't identify.
The second shop was the bookshop on The Lane. Mr. Finch, the proprietor, was a thin man with thick glasses and a habit of touching the spines of books as if he were checking for a pulse. Margaret bought a novel for four pounds and handed him two sovereigns. He took one. He bit it. He held it up to the light. He held it up to the light again.
"This is remarkable," he said. "Where on earth did you get this?"
"A church," Margaret said. And she left with her novel and a five-pound note and a feeling that was no longer in the back of her throat but in her stomach, where it sat like a stone.
The third shop was the jeweler on Hatton Garden, because by then Margaret had decided that she needed to know. She needed to know whether the coins were real, and the only person who could tell her was a man who handled gold for a living.
Mr. Abernathy looked at the sovereign through a loupe, turned it over three times, weighed it on a small scale, and set it down. He looked at Margaret over the top of his glasses.
"Madam," he said, "this coin is genuine. It was minted in 1923. It contains 0.2354 troy ounces of gold. At today's price, that's approximately one hundred and twelve pounds in gold content alone. The numismatic value is considerably higher."
He looked at the remaining seven sovereigns in Margaret's hand. "Are there more?"
She nodded.
"Bring them all," he said. "I'd like to see them."
She brought them all the next day. Mr. Abernathy examined each one. They were all genuine. They were all 1923. They were all worth more than Margaret made in a month.
"That's eight hundred pounds," he said. "Roughly. Possibly more."
Eight hundred pounds. A number so large it had no meaning in the context of Margaret Hale's life, where money was a line in a checkbook and a limit on a credit card and a feeling of quiet anxiety that lived behind her ribs like a second heartbeat.
She took the sovereigns home. She placed them on the mantelpiece. She looked at them in the afternoon light. And for the first time, she noticed something she had not noticed before: the light they threw back was wrong. Not fake-wrong. Not counterfeit-wrong. But something else. As if the gold itself was uncertain about being gold.
ACT IV: THE MIRROR
Margaret began to see the coins differently.
In the morning light, they looked like gold. In the afternoon, they looked like brass painted gold. By candlelight, they looked like the real thing and not the real thing simultaneously, as if the light itself was confused about what they were. She held them up to the mirror in the hall and saw her own face reflected behind the coins, distorted and doubled, and wondered whether she was the one who was confused or whether the coins were.
Victor Crane visited again. He brought a bottle of port and sat in the drawing room and talked about the weather and the roses and the church and the nature of finding things that someone else had lost. Margaret listened. She asked him, casually, what he thought about gold.
"It's just metal," Victor said. "The value is in the story. A coin is only worth what the story says it's worth. Take the story away and it's just a circle of metal. You could melt it down and it would be the same. It's the story that makes it precious."
"Even if the story is false?" Margaret said.
"Especially if the story is false," Victor said, and he smiled that smile that was not unkind.
She went to the hall mirror again. She held a sovereign up to her face. In the glass, the coin and her face were superimposed, the gold profile of George V overlapping her own features, and for a moment she could not tell where she ended and the coin began.
She put the coins in a drawer. She locked the drawer. She threw away the key.
She dreamed of gold falling through the sky. She dreamed of Victor Crane standing in the garden at number 42, holding a bag of sovereigns in one hand and a bag of tin in the other, and she could not tell which bag was which. She dreamed of herself, standing in the church vestry on a Wednesday afternoon, reaching into a green velvet pouch and finding it empty, and reaching again, and again, and each time finding it empty, until the pouch itself was empty, and she was empty, and the church was empty, and the world was empty, and the only thing that was not empty was the sound of her own breathing, which sounded, in the silence, exactly like the sound of gold coins falling onto a wooden floor.
She woke at three in the morning. She got out of bed. She went to the drawing room. She opened the drawer. She took out the sovereigns. She held them up to the candlelight. They looked like gold. They looked like tin. They looked like both and neither, and in that moment, standing in the dark with eight sovereigns in her hand and her own reflection in the hall mirror watching her from across the room, Margaret Hale understood that she would never know which they were, and that the not knowing was the point, and that the point was everything.
