The Blue Hour at the Ritz

ACT I

Lily Mercer arrived in New York with exactly thirty-seven dollars, a leather suitcase that had belonged to her mother, and a copy of Freud's Interpret of Dreams that she had bought from a second-hand bookdealer in Newark for forty cents.

She was twenty-four years old, which in 1926 made her either very young or very old depending on who you asked. She had come from a town in Ohio where the most exciting event of the year was the county fair and the most dangerous person was her father's second bottle of bourbon. She had come to New York because she had read a newspaper article about a woman who had become a psychoanalyst and she had thought: I can do that too.

It took her three weeks to find a room in a boarding house on Morningside Heights. It took her two months to enroll in a correspondence course in psychology from Columbia University. It took her six months to realise that nobody was going to take her seriously because she was from nowhere, looked like she could be mistaken for a typist, and had the kind of face that people smiled at without thinking.

She didn't mind. She had always been better at listening than at being smiled at.

The job came through a contact—a woman from her boarding house who knew a woman who knew a "certain gentleman" who needed "discreet psychological assistance." The pay was generous. The instructions were vague. The only rule was: make him fall in love with you.

Lily didn't ask who "him" was or what "you" was supposed to do. She had learned in her twelve years in Ohio that sometimes the thing you don't know is the thing that keeps you safe.

She met Julian Thorne on a Thursday in March. He was waiting for her in the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton, which was not a hotel she would have chosen for a first meeting. It was a place of marble and gold and men in evening dress who looked at her cotton blouse with the polite contempt reserved for people who couldn't afford the champagne.

Julian was sitting in a wingback chair by the window, reading a newspaper. He looked up when she approached and she felt something shift in her chest—not attraction, not exactly. Recognition. As though she had met him before, in another life, in another city, in a version of this conversation where neither of them was pretending.

"Ms. Mercer," he said. His voice was the colour of his eyes: dark, warm, unreadable. "I've been expecting you."

"Have you?" She sat down opposite him and opened her notebook. "That's convenient. I wasn't."

He smiled—a small, tired smile that didn't reach his eyes. "That's exactly what I was afraid of."

ACT II

The first session lasted three hours. Julian talked about his father, about the war, about the weight of inheriting a company built by a man who believed that strength was the same thing as cruelty. He talked about the nights when he couldn't sleep and sat by his window on the forty-second floor and watched the city lights and tried to understand why a man could have everything and still feel like he was drowning.

Lily listened. She took notes. She asked questions that she had learned in her courses—questions about childhood, about dreams, about the things that kept him awake. He answered them all, but his answers were guarded and polished, the answers of a man who had been trained since birth to say the right thing and mean the wrong one.

At the end of the session, he stood and looked at her with an expression she couldn't read.

"Do you know why I can't sleep, Ms. Hart?"

"Lily."

"Lily." He repeated her name carefully, as though tasting it for the first time. "Because I keep seeing a boy. Seventeen years old. He's wearing a dress. He's holding a photograph. He looks at me and he doesn't say anything and I can't shoot him and someone else does and I can't unhear the sound."

Lily set down her pen. Her hand was steady, but her chest was not.

"That's not insomnia, Mr. Thorne," she said quietly. "That's a conscience."

He looked at her for a long time. Then he sat down again and said: "Stay for dinner."

They ate at the hotel restaurant, and he told her about the war in a way that didn't involve the boy in the dress. He told her about the friends he had lost, the medals he had never worn, the way the champagne in this room tasted exactly the same as the mud in France. And Lily told him about Ohio, about her father's bottles, about the way she had read Freud on a bed that creaked when she turned over and had thought: maybe if I understand dreams, I can understand why my life is the way it is.

After dinner, he walked her to the door of the boarding house. It was past midnight, and the streets were quiet and the gas lamps cast long shadows on the pavement.

"Come back tomorrow?" he asked.

"I have a course to finish."

"You can finish it tomorrow."

She looked at him. He was standing in the lamplight, and for a moment he didn't look like a shipping magnate or a war hero or a man who owned half of Manhattan. He looked like a man who had never had anyone ask him how he was.

"Tomorrow," she said.

ACT III

The Ritz-Carlton was hosting a gala on a Saturday in May. The room was full of the kind of people who collected other people's lives the way other people collected stamps: as entertainment, not as understanding.

Lily wore a dress she had borrowed from the boarding house landlady—a simple black dress with a single strand of pearls that may or may not have been real. She stood near the edge of the ballroom with a glass of champagne she had no intention of drinking and watched Julian move through the crowd like a man who had learned to be exactly what people expected him to be.

He was charming. He was elegant. He was hollow.

She knew this because she had spent three months listening to him. She knew that his charm was a performance, his elegance a defence mechanism, his hollowness the result of a man who had been taught that vulnerability was a weakness from the day he was born.

She also knew that she was supposed to destroy him.

The message had come two days ago, typed on thick cream paper: *The time has come. Use what you've learned. Break him.*

She didn't know who had sent it. She didn't know what "what I'd learned" meant. All she knew was that someone had paid her to make Julian Thorne fall in love with her and then ruin him, and she was beginning to suspect that the person who had paid her knew far more about Julian than she did.

She found him on the terrace, away from the music and the laughter and the clinking of glasses. He was looking out at the city—the same city he had watched from his window every night for months—and his face was exactly as she had left it: tired, handsome, broken.

"They're having a wonderful time inside," he said without turning. "I can hear the orchestra."

"Are you going back in?"

"No." He turned to look at her. "I was waiting for you."

She felt something move in her chest—not the professional detachment she had cultivated, not the mission that had brought her here, but something raw and untrained and real.

"Julian," she said. "I need to tell you something."

He was quiet.

"It's not what you think. I'm not—" She stopped. Started again. "I was hired to be here. Someone paid me to come and— to make you trust me. And I did. And I'm sorry."

He looked at her for a long time. Then he said: "I know."

"What?"

"I know who hired you. I know why they hired you. I've known since the first session."

Her mouth went dry. "Then why—"

"Because I wanted someone to stay. Even if it was for the wrong reasons." He stepped closer. "Lily, do you know what the worst part of insomnia is? It's not the lack of sleep. It's the loneliness. When you can't sleep, when the world is dark and everyone else is dreaming and you are sitting alone with your thoughts, you realise that you have never—and I mean never—had anyone look at you and see you. Not the shipping magnate. Not the war hero. Not the heir to the Thorne fortune. You."

He paused. "You're the first person who's ever done that."

ACT IV

She didn't stay for the gala. She left with him, through the back stairs, past the kitchen and the service entrance and into the cool May night. They took the elevator to the top floor—his penthouse, which overlooked the city and the river and the dark shape of New Jersey on the other side.

They stood on the balcony. The sky was the colour of a bruise—blue and purple and the faintest hint of gold at the edges, the time that the French call l'heure bleue: the blue hour, when day and night are indistinguishable and the world feels like a dream.

"Do you dream, Lily?" he asked.

"Not really. I used to, before I came to New York. Now I just sleep. When I can."

"Freud said that dreams are the fulfilment of wishes."

"Did you read Freud?" She was surprised. "I thought you were more of a Nietzsche man."

"I read what I can find. In the dark, books are the only company that doesn't leave." He looked at her. "Do you have a wish, Lily Mercer? Something you want more than anything?"

She thought about it. She thought about the small room on Morningside Heights, the creaky bed, the correspondence course, the thirty-seven dollars that had become less every week. She thought about her father and his bottles and her mother's silence and the newspaper article that had brought her to this city.

"I wish," she said slowly, "for someone to tell me that it's okay to be from nowhere."

He took her hand. His fingers were warm and calloused—the hands of a man who had worked as well as commanded. "You're not from nowhere. You're from Ohio. And Ohio is not nowhere. It's the centre of everything. That's why people from there think they're the centre. It's a geographical fact."

She laughed. It was the first time she had laughed in months. Maybe years.

"Thank you," she said.

"For what?"

"For looking at me. For seeing me. For— for being real."

He squeezed her hand. "Lily, I have spent my entire life being everything other people needed me to be. I was a soldier. I was a son. I was an heir. I was a ghost. You're the first person who's asked me to be Julian."

She looked up at the sky—the blue hour, the in-between time, the moment when everything is possible and nothing is certain.

"Then be Julian," she said.

He didn't kiss her. He didn't need to. In the blue light of the Parisian sky—or whatever it was called in New York—they stood on the balcony of a building that was too tall and too expensive and too far from the ground, and he held her hand and she held his, and for a few minutes, in a world built on money and masks and inherited pain, two people were simply themselves.

It wasn't forever. It wasn't even forever tonight. But it was enough.

It had to be enough.
