The Harlem Roulette
The basement on 125th Street smelled like sweat and gin and possibility.
That's the only way I can describe it — possibility. Like the air itself was charged, crackling, waiting for someone to say something true. The room was packed shoulder to shoulder: dancers in sequined dresses, musicians tuning instruments that had seen better decades, gangsters wearing lapel pins that cost more than my father's annual rent, white tourists in straw boater hats and masks of cultural appreciation so thick they were practically costumes themselves.
And me, standing in the center of it all with a microphone that was held together by tape and hope, singing a song my mother taught me about a woman who walks on water because the bus fare is too damn high.
The contest was illegal. Prohibition had made everything illegal — alcohol, jazz, dancing after midnight, and apparently singing about water-walking women in basements that doubled as speakeasies. But illegality was the point. That's what made the basement on 125th feel like the center of the universe.
I won. Not because I was the best singer in the room — there were voices in that basement that could make a stone weep — but because I was the only one who sang like the song had happened to her. The woman walking on water wasn't a metaphor to me. It was my mother, wading through the Mississippi flood of '32 because the bus didn't run through cotton fields, and my grandmother, walking from Harlem to the Bronx every day to clean houses because the rent in a one-room apartment on 135th Street didn't pay itself.
The audience didn't cheer. They went silent. Then they roared.
That's how you know you've done something right — when silence comes first, then the roar follows like thunder after lightning.
Rufus Richardson saw me win. He was sent by his uncle to scout potential "legit" talent — that's what he called it, legit, like the people who came to these contests were inherently illegitimate. Rufus was a former bootlegging distributor who had gone legit after a raid on his warehouse, and he carried himself like a man who had learned to wear a suit without learning how to breathe in it.
"That girl," he told his uncle, pointing at me with a cigarette that was mostly ash. "That girl is going to make us more money than three warehouses of Canadian whiskey."
I didn't hear him say that. I was too busy being carried out of the basement by Freddie, my older brother, who was grinning like a man who had just won the lottery and was wondering if he should tell me or keep it secret.
"Did you see that?" he yelled over the roar. "You was incredible, Lottie! Absolutely incredible!"
I was not incredible. I was nervous. My hands were shaking so bad I could barely hold the microphone. But Freddie had a way of making everything sound like a celebration, even the things that were really just survival wearing a party hat.
Seabury Vanderbilt III — that's who I learned to call him later, though in the moment I just thought of him as the rich white guy in the straw hat who was standing on the sidewalk outside the basement listening through an open window — he stood on the sidewalk for the entire set. I found out about this from a girl named Hattie who had seen him through the crack in the door.
"He looked like a man being pulled by a magnet," Hattie told me at the rent party that weekend, where we were singing and drinking corn whiskey and Freddie was trying to flirt with a pianist named Ruby who was having none of it. "Like he was being dragged toward something he didn't understand but needed to understand."
I didn't think much about it at the time. Rich people came to basements all the time. They always wanted to hear what we sounded like before we "sold out," as Rufus put it. He had a theory about that: "You can sell your soul, Lottie, but you should sell it at a profit. That's just basic economics."
The packaging started the next week. Rufus had a plan — which was his specialty, having plans. He said: "We're going to take your beautiful gift and bring it to people who will properly value it." I asked him what "properly value" meant. He said it meant "you won't have to sing in basements for free anymore." I said: "I liked singing in basements for free." He looked at me like I had just delivered a punchline he hadn't anticipated.
New clothes — too fancy, stiff collars and hemlines that made me self-conscious. A new name — Lottie Moore instead of Lottie Baptiste, because Rufus said "Baptiste sounds like a church, and we're putting you in clubs now." A manager who spoke in euphemisms and a record producer who told me to "sing softer, like you're telling a secret to one person."
I sang like I was telling the truth to a thousand people. He said that wasn't the direction. I said direction was something you used when you were lost, and I wasn't lost. I knew exactly where I was — in a recording studio on 52nd Street, wearing a dress that cost more than my mother's annual rent, singing a song that was mine.
Seabury attended the session. He sat in the back, no entourage, no valet, just a man in a suit trying to look like he belonged in a room where the walls were covered in acoustic foam and the air conditioning was set to "clinical."
He didn't say anything during the session. He just watched me through the glass like I was a specimen he was studying. Afterward, Rufus told me: "He's important. Don't fuck this up."
I didn't know then that Seabury was an heir to a railroad fortune, spending his summers in Harlem "to find what's real." I didn't know that he lived with three older brothers who controlled the family empire and viewed him as the wild youngest son — the one who had gone to Yale and come back with opinions about class and privilege that made his father stop speaking to him at dinner.
I didn't know any of that because knowing things about rich people was useless. What I knew was that he showed up to my first recording session with a diamond cufflink and a playlist of field recordings — actual recordings of people singing in fields, made by some government folklorist in the 1920s — and he said: "I want your voice to sound like these voices. But with modern production."
I listened to the field recordings. They sounded like my mother. I said: "You want me to sound like my mother, but on a record?"
He said: "I want you to sound like yourself."
That was the first time a rich person had told me that and actually meant it. The others — and there had been a few, because Rufus was good at his job — had meant: "I want you to sound like yourself, but curated. Like yourself with the edges sanded off."
The album was released in the spring of '24. It was a hit — but not the kind anyone expected. White audiences in Manhattan were buying it as "exotic," not as art. Black audiences in Harlem were confused — was Lottie Moore one of them, or was she becoming something else?
Rufus booked me for a series of upscale clubs in Manhattan. The first one had no stools — patrons sat. I had to stand for three hours, singing to people who sipped cocktails and nodded politely. After the third set, a man in a tuxedo came up to me and said: "You sing like someone who has suffered beautifully."
I didn't know whether to be insulted or flattered, so I said: "I sing because if I don't, I'll scream. Suffering is just a side effect."
He laughed. I didn't.
Seabury took me to a private party in the Hudson Valley. I sang for two hundred wealthy strangers who wore pearls and spoke in voices like silk being poured over glass. Afterward, I found Seabury on the terrace, looking out over the water. He was holding a glass of whiskey he hadn't drunk.
"My father owns the building where the basement contest was held," I said. I didn't know why I was telling him this. It just came out. "They evicted Mrs. Gable last month because she stopped paying rent after her husband died. She was sixty-eight years old and made the best cornbread in Harlem."
Seabury set down his glass. "I know."
"You know?"
"My father signed the eviction order."
"Did you stop him?"
"No."
"Then you're just as complicit as he is."
He didn't argue. He just looked out at the water and said: "I came down here looking for something real. I found you. And then I did nothing while my family destroyed the people who made you real."
His voice was flat. Not defensive. Not apologetic. Just flat. Like he had said the sentence out loud for the first time and was hearing it for the first time too.
I went back to Harlem the next day. I sang at the basement on 125th Street for free, because that's where the people who understood me lived. Freddie was there, grinning. Hattie was there, dancing. Ruby was there, playing piano. And when I sang my mother's song — the one about the woman who walks on water — the audience didn't go silent this time. They sang with me.
Not all of them. Not even most of them. But enough. Enough to make me understand that real wasn't something you found. It was something you built. Brick by brick. Note by note. Person by person.
And I was done letting other people build it for me.
