The Nameless Benefactor
The speech came through the radio in a crackle of static, like a voice from the bottom of a well. Alistair Van Derlyn sat at his writing desk in the apartment on Central Park South, a glass of sherry in his left hand, and listened to a boy he had never met become a man the entire city was listening to.
"My name is Marcus Webb," the voice said, and it was deeper now than Alistair remembered -- or perhaps he was remembering wrong, because what he remembered was a child's voice, thin and uncertain, speaking into a telephone receiver at the other end of a long wire. "I stand before you today as a lawyer, not because I was born to privilege, but because someone decided that privilege should not be a birthright but a bridge. I do not know who built that bridge. I do not know his name. But I know this: wherever you are, wherever you are right now, reading this in a newspaper or hearing it on the wireless -- you should be proud of what you have done, and you should pass it on. Because the world does not change because of one person. It changes because one person makes it possible for another person to change it."
The room applauded. Alistair did not applaud. He set down his glass and picked up a pen and began to write.
Marcus Theodore Webb was born on March 14, 1897, in a room above a laundromat on 125th Street. His mother, Sarah Webb, was twenty-one years old and had been born with the name Sarah Thomas, because the woman who delivered her in a Memphis hospital had told her that was her name, and Sarah had not corrected her. She had not known her own mother. She had known a man named Alistair -- Alistair Van Derlyn II, who was visiting Mississippi on a hunting trip and had stayed three days at the hotel and had found, in the laundromat on 125th Street, a girl who looked at him the way she looked at everything in the world: with a kind of desperate gratitude, as if his attention might be the thing that kept her alive.
It was not. Alistair II went back to New York. He went back to his father's shipping business and his mother's drawing-room society and his own slow suffocation in the life that had been chosen for him before he was born. He did not think about Sarah. He did not think about the fact that she was pregnant. He did not think about any of it for twenty-eight years.
Twenty-eight years is a long time to not think about something. It will, eventually, rot.
In 1925, Alistair was forty-eight years old and had achieved everything his family had expected and everything he had despised. He attended the right parties. He sat at the right table. He nodded at the right moments and smiled the right number of teeth and said nothing that could be quoted and everything that could be forgotten. His father had died two years earlier. His mother was alive and bored and filling her days with philanthropy that consisted primarily of signing checks for causes she could not name. Alistair loved his mother. He also thought, on quiet mornings when the apartment was empty and the sunlight fell across the parquet floor in long golden bars, that his entire life had been a performance in which he had forgotten his lines but continued to smile anyway.
The discovery happened on a Tuesday. Alistair was at a charity dinner at the Metropolitan Club -- not for Marcus, not yet, but for the NAACP, because his friend Charles had said, "You should come, Ali. You look like you need something that isn't champagne." The guest speaker was a young lawyer from Howard University. He was black. He was twenty-eight years old. His name was Marcus Webb.
Alistair did not know why the name struck him like a physical blow. He sat in the back of the hall, in a tuxedo that felt like a costume, and watched this boy -- this man -- speak about segregation and housing and the simple, terrifying fact that in America, the color of your skin was still, after one hundred years, the first thing anyone looked at.
After the speech, Alistair stood in the corridor outside the hall, pretending to examine a painting he was not reading, and said to Charles: "Where did you find this man?"
"NAACP recommended him," Charles said. "He's brilliant, isn't he? Young for a speaker, but --"
"His name," Alistair said. "What is it?"
"Marcus Webb. Why?"
Alistair did not answer. He went home, sat in his apartment, and for the first time in twenty-eight years, he thought about Sarah.
He found her through a series of phone calls that felt, to him, like climbing down a rope ladder into water he had spent his entire life avoiding. She was dead. Tuberculosis, 1920. She had one son. The son had been placed in the Harlem Children's Aid Society when she was hospitalized. The son had been raised in an orphanage on 110th Street. The son's name was Marcus Theodore Webb.
Alistair hung up the telephone. He stood in the hallway of his apartment building for ten minutes, holding the receiver, while the dial tone droned on and on and on, like a machine that had been left running in an empty room.
He did not go to the orphanage. He did not knock on a door and say: I am your father. He went home and wrote a check for four thousand dollars -- almost a year's income, almost everything he owned that was liquid -- and made it payable to the Harlem Children's Aid Society, with the memo line blank.
The check was the first brick in a bridge. He would spend the next fifteen years laying more.
Howard University tuition: covered, paid to the bursar under the name "A Friend." Summer internships at civil rights organizations: arranged, under pseudonyms, through friends Alistair had accumulated over forty-eight years of pretending to care about the world. Law school applications: submitted by a private investigator Alistair hired, who never knew the applicant's identity and only knew that the boy's name was Marcus and he needed, more than anything in the world, a chance.
Alistair told no one. Not Charles. Not his mother. Not the priest he visited every Christmas because ritual was the only language he still spoke fluently. He did this alone, in the quiet hours between midnight and three in the morning, when the apartment was silent and the only light came from the desk lamp and the reflection of his own face in the dark window across the room.
He was building a bridge. He did not know where it would lead. He only knew that the boy on the other side deserved to cross.
Thirty years later, Alistair Van Derlyn lay in a hospital bed on Park Avenue, with a breathing apparatus and a view of the skyline that he had paid for but would never look at again. He had a pen in his hand. He had a letter in front of him. The letter was addressed to Marcus Webb, at the NAACP headquarters on 135th Street. It contained one paragraph:
"My name is Alistair Van Derlyn. Your mother was Sarah Thomas. I was twenty years old and foolish and cruel in the way that well-bred young men are cruel: not with malice, but with absence. I did not know you existed until I was forty-eight and heard you speak in a room full of people who wanted to change the world. I have spent every day since then trying to make your voice louder than mine. I do not expect you to forgive me. I do not expect you to know my name. But I needed, before I die, to say it: I am your father. And I am sorry."
He sealed the letter. He gave it to the nurse. "Send this tomorrow," he said. "I may not be alive tomorrow. If I am not alive tomorrow, send it anyway."
The nurse nodded. She did not ask questions. She had learned, in eleven years of nursing on Park Avenue, that some people's questions are the only things keeping them alive, and you do not disturb them.
The next morning, Alistair Van Derlyn died in his sleep. The nurse gave him the privacy of silence. Then she took the letter to the mailbox in the lobby and dropped it through the slot.
Marcus Webb received the letter three weeks later, when he was in Chicago arguing a housing discrimination case before a federal judge. He read it in a taxi, on the way to the courthouse, and sat in the back seat with the letter open on his lap and did not move for five minutes while the taxi driver waited, nervously, in a line of cars that stretched three blocks down State Street.
When Marcus finally spoke, he said: "Keep going."
He never wrote back. He never told anyone. He took the letter into the courthouse, placed it in his briefcase beside his legal pad and his fountain pen, and walked into court and argued the case with a ferocity that the judge described later as "the kind of passion that comes from knowing exactly what is at stake."
The case was won. Marcus Webb went on to argue before the Supreme Court seven years later. He never mentioned his father. He never mentioned the bridge.
But every year, on March 14 -- his birthday -- he wrote a check. The memo line was always blank. The recipient changed: sometimes a scholarship fund at Howard, sometimes a legal defense fund in Birmingham, sometimes a community center in Detroit. The amount was always four thousand dollars.
He did this for forty years. He never told anyone why four thousand. He never told anyone that four thousand was the price of a bridge built by a man who loved a boy he had never met, who wanted the boy to cross it and never look back.
