The Absurd Collapse

Arthur Pringle was a man of profound insignificance. He worked for the Department of Urban Zoning in a cubicle that smelled faintly of old cabbage and desperation. His greatest achievement in life was a filing system that reduced the retrieval time of zoning permits by four seconds. He liked his coffee lukewarm, his ties beige, and his life predictable.

The end of the world began on a Tuesday, during the 10:15 AM coffee rush at 'The Roasted Bean'.

Arthur was standing in line, contemplating whether to add a cinnamon sprinkle to his latte, when the woman in front of him simply... flattened. There was no scream, no blood, no dramatic flash of light. She just became a two-dimensional image of herself, a human pancake lying perfectly flat on the linoleum floor.

The barista didn't even stop steaming the milk. "Excuse me, ma'am, you're blocking the queue," he said, his voice devoid of emotion.

Arthur blinked. He looked around. The man behind him was now a thin strip of cardboard. The espresso machine had become a flat drawing of a machine.

"This is highly irregular," Arthur noted, checking his watch. "I have a meeting at 11."

He stepped over the flattened woman and ordered his latte. As he waited, he noticed that his own left hand was starting to lose its depth. He held it up to the light. It looked like a piece of tracing paper.

"Oh dear," Arthur sighed. "I suppose this means the zoning permits for the new library are now moot."

For the next hour, Arthur wandered through Manhattan, observing the collapse with the detached curiosity of a man who had spent twenty years reading municipal codes. He saw a taxi cab fold into a square. He saw a hot dog vendor become a small, colorful rectangle. He saw the Empire State Building lean over and flatten itself like a discarded cigarette pack.

The most absurd part was the reaction of the people. Instead of panicking, they began to argue about the aesthetics of the collapse.

"I find the two-dimensional look far more avant-garde," a woman in a Chanel suit remarked, while her legs were slowly merging into the sidewalk. "It's so minimalist. So... *now*."

Arthur finally reached his office. His boss, Mr. Henderson, was already a flat sheet of paper pinned to the wall.

"Pringle!" the paper shouted, the voice sounding thin and tinny. "Why aren't you at your desk? The universe is ending, and you're still not filling out your time-sheets!"

Arthur looked at his boss, then at his own now-flat torso. He felt a sudden, overwhelming sense of relief. For the first time in his life, he didn't have to worry about the zoning laws. He didn't have to worry about the cabbage smell. He didn't even have to worry about the cinnamon sprinkle.

He lay down on the office carpet, aligning himself perfectly with the grid of the tiles.

"Finally," Arthur whispered, "some peace and quiet."
