I.
The piano sounded like rain on a tin roof—staccato, restless, alive. Marcus Delaney's fingers moved across the keys without looking at them; he had been playing since he was six years old, and his hands knew the geography of this upright Yamaha better than they knew the faces of the people he lived with.
The club was half-full on a Tuesday. A Tuesday in 1925, in a basement on 135th Street, where the walls sweated and the air was thick with cigarette smoke and the smell of somebody's mother's collard greens. Marcus played for the people who stayed: the dockworkers with calloused hands that still moved instinctively to the rhythm, the girls with painted lips and tired eyes who swayed without dancing, the old men in cheap suits who closed their eyes and pretended they were somewhere else.
After the set, a man in a silk hat sat at the front table and tapped his glass. "That was beautiful, son. But you should be playing somewhere bigger."
Marcus smiled the way he had learned to smile—in 1920s Harlem, a Black man smiling at a white man in a silk hat was either a gesture of dignity or a prelude to trouble, and he had never quite figured out which. "This is pretty big for a Tuesday, Mr.—"
"O'Brien. Big Pat O'Brien. I run the printing press on 125th. Got a job for you, Mr. Delaney. Not a musical job."
Marcus waited. The piano keys felt warm under his fingertips.
"New thing," O'Brien said, leaning in. His voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper. "Electrical device. Like a radio, but—bigger. The man who built it, he calls it Elysium. You put on this brass helmet with the wires, and you see— God, how do I explain this? You see another world. A real one. Not a picture on a screen. A world you can walk through."
Marcus stared at him. "You're talking about a hallucination machine."
"I'm talking about a door."

The Elysium parlor was upstairs above O'Brien's printing press, behind a door marked PRIVATE. Inside, the room was cool and dark, lit only by the blue glow of three enormous electrical panels the size of wardrobe cabinets. Wires ran from the panels to a row of canvas-backed chairs, and each chair had a brass helmet resting on an articulated arm.
"Three seats," O'Brien said. "Three from the neighbourhood. I figured—since we're investing the money, they should come from people who understand what it means to start from nothing."
"How much?" Marcus asked.
"The patron who built it—he's anonymous. But the cost is fifty dollars per person. One-time. After that, sessions are free."
Fifty dollars. That was three months' wages at the printing press. Marcus looked at the helmet, at the wires, at the three canvas chairs, and thought: this is either the greatest thing that has ever happened to this city, or it is a very expensive con.

Palm trees swayed in a breeze that smelled of salt and something sweeter—like jasmine, or maybe just possibility. And around him, stretching to the horizon, was a city. Not the cramped, soot-stained city of 1925 Harlem, but a city of clean white stone and wide boulevards, with towers that rose like fingers reaching toward the sky.
"Welcome to Elysium," said the voice. "You may call yourself anything you wish."
Marcus looked down at his hands—still his hands, but smoother, stronger, without the ink stains or the callouses. He thought for a moment, then spoke aloud:
"Call me Uplifter."

Marcus had discovered that the Collective's street-honed skills translated directly into Elysium's combat system. Red's dock-worker strength made him a natural tank. Tiny's pickpocket reflexes made him the best scout in the valley. Sister Agnes's patience made her an extraordinary healer. Even Slick's criminal instincts found expression in Elysium as tactical brilliance—he could read enemy formations the way he used to read crowd patterns on Times Square.
They were not playing for money. They were playing for proof.

Marcus watched from the preparation room as the broadcast screens showed the crowd—hundreds of thousands of players, standing in tiered stands that rose like the Colosseum, their avatars shimmering in a rainbow of colours and armour.
Opposing them: The Golden Company. Wealth players. People who had bought the best equipment, hired the best coaches, spent hundreds of hours in premium sessions. Their avatar was a gleaming wall of gold-plated plate, led by a player called Goldfinger, who had been a minor British noble in his waking life and still carried himself with the casual entitlement of a man who had never been told no.
The match began.
For the first hour, it was beautiful. The Collective moved like a single organism—Tiny flanking, Red absorbing damage, Sister Agnes keeping everyone alive, Slick finding weaknesses Marcus had never seen in any formation, Professor Whitfield calling out strategies that left Marcus staring at him in wonder.
