The Glass Ceiling

Alan lived in a world of transparency. In the heart of New York, the "Apex Tower" was a marvel of architectural honesty—every wall was glass, every conversation was recorded, and every thought was indexed by the company's neural-net.

Alan was a Senior Analyst at Zenith Global. He was the golden boy, the man who could predict market crashes before they happened. He believed in the system. He believed that transparency was the only way to achieve true efficiency.

Then came the "Purge."

It started with a memo. Alan was asked to attend a meeting on the 100th floor. When he arrived, he found the room empty, except for a single tablet on the table. The tablet displayed a list of "Inefficiencies." His name was at the top.

The evidence was damning. A series of trades he had made three years ago—trades that had saved the company millions—were now being reframed as "unauthorized market manipulation." The data had been subtly altered, the timestamps shifted, the intent rewritten.

Alan tried to fight back. He went to the CEO, but the CEO looked at him through a glass wall with a look of profound pity.

"Alan, the data is the truth," the CEO said. "And the data says you are a liability."

Within an hour, Alan's access codes were revoked. His bank accounts were frozen. His digital identity was erased. He walked out of the building and found that his keycard didn't work for his own apartment. He was a ghost in a city of glass.

He spent the next three days wandering the streets, watching the people he had worked with look through him as if he were invisible. He realized that the transparency he had worshipped was not a window, but a mirror. The system didn't want the truth; it wanted a narrative that it could control.

He returned to the Apex Tower one last time. He didn't try to break in. He simply stood across the street and looked up at the 100th floor. He saw the new analyst sitting in his chair, looking at the same screens, believing in the same lies.

Alan laughed. It was a cold, hollow sound. He realized that he hadn't been purged from the system; he had been liberated from it. He turned his back on the glass tower and walked into the crowd, finally invisible, finally free.

The basement settlement house on Taylor Street smelled of boiled cabbage and wet wool, and on this particular evening of October 1926, it smelled of something else too: the desperate hope of people who had run out of everything else to hope for.
