Sample V-10: The Simulation Error

Mark was a man of profound insignificance. He worked as a junior accountant in a town in Ohio where the most exciting event of the year was the annual corn festival. His life was a grey blur of spreadsheets and microwave dinners.

Then came the Tuesday of the Third Knock.

While staring at a flickering fluorescent light in his office, Mark noticed a pattern. If he knocked on his desk three times in a specific, syncopated rhythm, the world would "hiccup." For a fraction of a second, the walls of his office would turn into green lines of code, and he could see the underlying structure of his reality.

Mark began to experiment. He discovered that by varying the rhythm, he could trigger different "bugs." A double-knock allowed him to walk through walls. A triple-tap let him read the thoughts of his boss. A complex sequence allowed him to manifest a thousand dollars in his bank account.

He felt like a god in a world of NPCs. He spent months optimizing his life, turning his boring existence into a playground of glitches. He bought a mansion, seduced the woman of his dreams, and erased every mistake he had ever made.

But the simulation began to notice the errors.

First, it was the "Shadow-Men"—featureless, grey entities that appeared in the corners of his vision, staring at him with void-like eyes. Then, the environment began to degrade. The taste of food vanished. The colors of the sunset became pixelated. People started repeating the same three sentences in a loop.

Mark tried to "bug" his way out of the degradation, but every fix created a larger crash. He realized that he wasn't a player in the game; he was a corrupted file.

One morning, Mark woke up to find that his bedroom had disappeared. He was floating in a white, infinite void. A voice, devoid of gender or emotion, echoed through the space.

"Sample 402-B has exhibited critical instability," the voice said. "The anomaly is no longer providing useful data. Initiate system purge."

Mark screamed, but he had no mouth. He tried to knock on the void, but there was no desk. He felt himself being compressed, his memories being archived, his consciousness being deleted line by line.

As the last bit of his data vanished, Mark had one final, lucid thought: the corn festival had actually been quite nice.
