The Harlem Sun
The light hit the library window at exactly four o'clock, the way Marcus had calculated it would. Three mirrors, angled precisely, catching the late afternoon sun over 125th Street and throwing it through the tall arched windows of the Harlem Community Library like a golden finger pointing inward.
Inside, children sat on the floor with their backs to the wall, their faces turned upward toward the light as though it were something alive. Which, Marcus thought, smiling to himself, it sort of was.
"Mr. Johnson," said a small voice. "Is the sun going to stay in here forever now?"
Marcus knelt beside the speaker—a girl of about seven, dark-skinned and bright-eyed, wearing a dress that had been someone's Sunday best. He knew her name: Lila. She lived three blocks south, in a building where the landlord refused to fix the boiler and the children played in hallways because the apartments were too cold to sit in.
"No, Lila," Marcus said. "The sun's going to leave soon. But tomorrow, I'll make sure it comes back."
"Even on cloudy days?"
Marcus paused. He had not solved that problem yet. "Even on cloudy days," he said, though they both knew it was a lie.
The library door opened and Zora Delaney stepped inside, shaking snow from a fur coat that had seen better days. Zora was thirty-two, famous in certain circles for her collection of Black folklore and her unapologetic insistence that Black art should be beautiful, not apologetic. She was also the reason Marcus had electricity in his apartment, and the reason his solar collector design had been built at all.
"Marcus," she said, her voice carrying that particular blend of warmth and authority that made people turn and listen. "You've got visitors."
Marcus stood, brushing dust from his trousers. Two men in dark suits stood in the doorway, their faces carefully neutral. Marcus knew that face—the face of men who worked for people who owned things.
"Mr. Johnson," the taller one said. "I'm Mr. Hendricks, with Metropolitan Utilities. We understand you've been making some... innovations with solar energy."
"I've been making some innovations with mirrors and angles, yes."
Mr. Hendricks smiled in a way that didn't reach his eyes. "We'd like to see them. And we'd like to discuss the possibility of Metropolitan acquiring the patent."
Marcus felt something cold settle in his stomach. He had expected this. Not today, perhaps, or next week, but eventually, the people who owned things would notice what he was doing and try to own it too.
"The patent is in my name," Marcus said carefully.
"Of course it is," Hendricks said. "But names like yours don't appear on lucrative contracts very often, do they? Where would you even file the paperwork? How would you defend it in court? Metropolitan Utilities would handle all of that. We'd provide you with a consulting position—generous salary, office in a real building, air conditioning in the summer."
The offer hung in the air like the sunlight through the window. Marcus knew what a real office meant. Knew what air conditioning meant. Knew what it felt like to sleep in an apartment where the walls were thin as paper and the heating was a luxury he could not afford.
"And in return?" Marcus asked.
"In return, the patent becomes Metropolitan's property. You receive your salary and a modest royalty. The technology reaches its full potential—imagine, Mr. Johnson, solar collectors on every building in Harlem. On every building in America."
"Who decides which buildings?"
Hendricks' smile didn't waver. "That's a question for engineers and businessmen, Mr. Johnson. Not for... well, not for someone who builds his prototypes in a basement."
Zora stepped forward. "What he means," she said, her voice suddenly very quiet and very dangerous, "is that you want to take something that belongs to Harlem and turn it into something that belongs to you."
Hendricks' expression tightened almost imperceptibly. "Ms. Delaney. I assure you, Metropolitan Utilities has the best interests of all our communities at heart."
"Then start by telling us how much you're offering."
The negotiation lasted twenty minutes. Marcus sat through it in silence, watching the sunlight shift across the floor as the mirrors outside adjusted their angle. He was not good at this—the language of money and ownership felt like a second language he had never quite mastered. But he understood one thing, clearly: if he signed with Metropolitan, the solar collectors would still be built. The libraries and theaters and community centers would still have heat and light. But they would not be his. They would not belong to the people who had asked for them.
When Hendricks finally left—promising to send a contract, saying that time was of the essence—Zora poured two glasses of cheap whiskey and handed one to Marcus.
"You don't have to decide anything today," she said.
"I know."
"But you will have to decide something. And when you do, remember that the people who are asking you to sell are the same people who told your grandfather that he should be grateful for the scraps they threw over the fence."
Marcus drank his whiskey and looked at the children, still sitting in the sunlight. Lila was drawing on the floor with a piece of chalk—something that looked like a house with a sun above it, and stick figures standing in front of it, holding hands.
"I'm not going to sell," he said.
Zora nodded. "I know."
"You do?"
"Marcus, you've been calculating angles your whole life. Let me calculate people for a change." She smiled. "Besides, I've already told the Foundation that your project is too important to be sold to Metropolitan. They've agreed to fund the next phase."
Marcus stared at her. "How much?"
"Enough to build five more collector arrays. Enough to power the library, the theater, the community center, the night school, and the clinic." She paused. "It won't be everything. But it will be something that belongs to us."
Outside, the sun continued its slow descent. The mirrors adjusted, catching the light and throwing it inward, into the hearts of the buildings that Harlem had built with its own hands. Marcus stood at the window and watched the light move across the street, illuminating storefronts and fire escapes, the faces of people walking home from work, the children playing in the snow.
He thought about the physics of it—the way light traveled in straight lines until it hit a surface, then bounced off at an equal and opposite angle. You couldn't create light, not really. You could only redirect it. Take what was already there, already shining, and aim it where it was needed most.
It was, he decided, a good metaphor. Whether for physics or for life.
"Mr. Johnson!" Lila called from the floor. "Will you read us a poem tonight? The one about the stars?"
Marcus smiled. "The one about the stars, yes."
He sat down beside her on the floor, the whiskey warm in his stomach, the sunlight warm on his face, and began to read. Outside, the mirrors continued their slow, precise dance, catching the sun and throwing it back into the heart of Harlem, where it belonged.
