"I am evaluating whether humanity is worth saving," I said. The words felt strange in my mouth, like a line from a play I had not fully understood.

"The Source," I said.
"The Source," she repeated, as if testing the word. "Does the Source have a heart, Mr. Gray? Does it feel anything when it watches us live and die and love and lose?"
I did not answer. Because the truth was, I did not know anymore.
## Part IV
The final report was due on a Monday. I sat at my desk in the boarding house, the typewriter waiting, and stared at the blank page. The Source expected a verdict: preserve or eliminate. A simple binary choice, clean and mathematical.
But I had spent nine months in Los Angeles, and the city had done to me what it does to everyone who stays long enough: it had made me human. I had watched Rose Martinez work cases that would break a lesser woman and found that she broke beautifully. I had watched people love and lose and love again in the dimly lit bars and sun-drenched streets. I closed the typewriter. I walked to the window. The city stretched before me, infinite in its complexity, infinite in its contradictions. Somewhere out there, Rose Martinez was solving a case that would make her famous. Somewhere out there, someone was falling in love, or losing it, or finding it again.
I picked up the blank page, folded it carefully, and placed it in a drawer. The verdict would have to wait. The city was not finished with me yet, and neither was I with the city.
