The Last Lamp of the Border

Act I: The Exile's Path (20%) Sophie was cast out of her home in a small European border town during the Great Fever, a time when fear was more contagious than the disease itself. Her stepmother, the town's self-appointed moral guardian, accused her of carrying the contagion to justify seizing her father's estate. Sophie was driven into the wilderness with nothing but a cloak and a small lantern. The townspeople watched her go, their faces masked in fear and a hidden, shameful relief that the "impurity" had been excised from their midst.

Act II: The Valley of the Fallen (30%) In the depths of the forest, Sophie found a hidden settlement of the "unclean"—those who had survived the fever but were shunned by society. They lived in a state of perpetual mourning, their bodies scarred and their spirits broken. Sophie didn't fear them; she cared for them. She used her knowledge of herbs to soothe their pain and her voice to remind them of their humanity. For a year, the valley became a sanctuary of the broken, and Sophie became its heart, the only light in a place of absolute darkness. She taught them to read, to sing, and to believe that they were still human.

Act III: The Great Surge (35%) The tragedy returned when a second, more virulent wave of the fever swept through the valley. The settlement became a triage center for the dying, a place of screams and silence. Sophie worked without sleep, moving from bed to bed, giving her own rations to the children. As the infection reached her, she realized she was the only one left who could organize the evacuation of the survivors to the coast. She spent her final strength guiding the last group through the mountain pass, her lantern flickering in the wind, her breath becoming a ragged whisper. She fought the darkness until the very end, refusing to let the flame go out.

Act IV: The Eternal Light (15%) Sophie died on the ridge, watching the survivors reach the safety of the sea. She fell into a deep sleep as the first light of dawn touched the peaks. Years later, the townspeople returned to the valley and found a small, weathered lantern resting on a grave with no name. They realized that the girl they had cast out as a plague had been the only one among them who was truly pure, and that her light had saved the only people who mattered.
