The Last Tea Master

The kettle whistled. The sound was lonely.

Master Takeshi poured the water. It fell into the bowl in a thin, steady stream. Steam rose. The guest waited.

"You are leaving," the guest said.

"Yes," Takeshi said. "The tea garden will close. There is no one to inherit it."

The guest looked at the bowl. The tea was a pale, translucent green. Perfect. "Make me the tea," he said. "One more time."

Takeshi nodded. He picked up the bamboo whisk. He moved it in a circle, slow and precise. The tea frothed. White foam on green water. It looked like waves on a quiet sea.

He placed the bowl before the guest. The guest lifted it with both hands. Bowed. Drank.

The tea was bitter. It was supposed to be. Life is bitter. The guest understood this.

"Thank you," the guest said.

Takeshi said nothing. He packed his tools. The whisk. The bowl. The kettle. All of it, into a wooden box.

Outside, it began to rain. Small, quiet drops. The garden breathed.

The guest left. Takeshi locked the door. He stood on the porch for a long time, watching the rain. Then he turned and walked away.

The garden remained. Empty. Beautiful. Waiting for no one.
