Mei was seventeen when she first saw the celestial messenger. A boy from the stars, fallen into the river that ran behind her village.

His skin glowed faintly in the moonlight, and his eyes held colors she had no names for. When he spoke, his voice sounded like wind through bamboo.

"I am Zhou," he said, "and I cannot return home."

Mei hid him in her family's storehouse, bringing him food and teaching him their ways. Days became weeks, and weeks became seasons. Zhou learned to eat rice, to speak their dialect, to bow correctly. But his gaze always turned upward, toward the sky he could no longer touch.

One night, Mei found him on the roof, staring at constellations. "Do you miss it?" she asked.

"Every moment," he admitted. "But I have found something else here. Something I did not know I was seeking."

She took his hand—a bold gesture for a village girl. "Then stay. Build a new home."

Zhou turned to her, and for the first time since falling, he smiled. It was a small thing, but it transformed his strange face into something beautiful.

The stars wheeled overhead, indifferent and eternal. But in the storehouse below, two people began weaving a new story, one that belonged to neither sky nor earth, but to the space between.
