The rain had been falling since I crossed the Mississippi, a steady southern rain that turns everything to mud and makes the cypress trees weep their brown needles into the ditches. "Everything is wrong." He finally turned. His face was narrow and dark—the Thorne family face, the face of men who spent too much time in dim rooms and too little time in the sun. Chapter Two: The Inheritance

"You shouldn't have come back, baby," she said. "This place don't bring nothing but trouble."

"I'm his nephew, Mae. I come back when he calls."

And your Uncle Henry—Elias's older brother—he went out to check the corn one evening and was gone by morning. We found his rifle leaning against a cypress tree. His boots were beside it. His footprints went to the tree and stopped."

"Mae, that's superstition."

She looked at me with eyes that had seen ninety-three years of southern weather and human folly, and she said, "Child, in this part of the world, superstition is just history that nobody wrote down."

Chapter Three: The Claim

Elias spent three weeks telling me what he had found. He did it at night, in the observatory, by the light of a kerosene lamp that smelled of sulfur and made the brass telescope glow amber.

He called it a dark star—a body so dense, he explained, using words I half understood from the library books, that it bent light around itself and pulled everything nearby into its gravity. It was invisible to the eye but visible through its effect on the stars around it, like seeing the wind by watching the trees.

"It's ours," he said. "The Thornes have claimed land from the Choctaw since eighteen thirty. We claimed the delta. We claimed the river. And now I'm going to claim this. I've filed a declaration with the space authority in Washington. Elias Thorne, claimant. Thorne's Dark Star, designation. Running facility: proposed."

"You filed a space claim."

"I filed a celestial property declaration. It's the same thing, just with better paperwork."

"Nobody's ever—"

"Then I'll be the first. Just like my ancestors were the first to clear this land, to plant cotton on it, to watch it turn to mud and watch the money drain out of it and watch the bank take it piece by piece."

Mr. Whitfield came five weeks later. He was a Memphis banker—tall, thin, wearing a suit that cost more than the Thorne estate was worth. He carried a stack of documents that were, in aggregate, a death certificate for everything the Thornes had left.

"Mr. Thorne," he said to Elias, standing in the barn doorway in dry shoes and a dry coat while rain poured around him. "I represent the First National Bank of Memphis. This property is in default. The mortgage is called. You have thirty days to vacate."

Elias looked at him the way a man looks at a storm—he acknowledges its existence but refuses to be afraid of it.

"You can have the barn," he said. "You can have the land. But you cannot have what I've found."

Whitfield blinked. "I'm not interested in what you've found, Mr. Thorne. I'm interested in the money you owe."

That night, Elias went to the谷仓. I followed. He was moving things—old airplane parts he had collected from a scrap yard in Memphis, a motorcycle engine, copper wire, a car battery. He was assembling something.

"Julian," he said without turning. "The storm is coming."

"What storm."

"The one that takes Thornes. I know what it is now. It's not a curse. It's a thing. A dark thing in the sky. And it's been calling our family for generations. Grandfather walked into the river. Father vanished from his bed. Uncle Henry's boots stopped in the swamp. They were all trying to get to it. And now I'm going to answer the call myself."

Chapter Four: The Night

The storm came on a Friday night in June. It was the kind of southern storm that sounds like an army—rain like rifle fire, thunder like cannon, wind that shakes the cypress trees until they groan like dying men.

I found Elias at the谷仓 door. He was wearing a raincoat that had been a man's in another lifetime and a bicycle helmet that was dented and scratched. Behind him, in the center of the barn floor, was his machine—a horrifying and magnificent thing: a motorcycle engine strapped to a frame of cypress planks, with a basket made from a grain bin and a propeller salvaged from a windmill.

It was not a rocket. It was not even a plane. It was a madman's vehicle, held together by barnacles of hope and rust.

"Answering the call." He started the engine. It coughed, sputtered, and then caught with a roar that I felt in my teeth.

"Stop, Elias. You'll kill yourself."

"Maybe," he said, and his voice was calm, almost happy. "But if I'm going to disappear, I want to disappear going toward something, not away from it."

He pushed the machine forward. It gathered speed across the barn floor, wheels spinning on the wet wood, and then it hit the ramp he had built—a loading ramp from the old grain days—and it lifted.

I ran to the door and watched it rise. It was a terrible and beautiful thing—this crooked, patched-together vehicle, lifting off the ground on a storm night in the Mississippi delta, heading north into the sky toward a star that nobody could see.

It disappeared into the rain and the lightning and I knew, with the certainty of a man who has watched a Thorne make a decision, that I would never see him again.

The storm passed in the morning. I walked to the barn alone. The ramp was broken. The ground where the machine had lifted was scorched and muddy. The sky was clear and blue and empty.

He was gone. Like his father. Like his grandfather. Like every Thorne man who lived past forty and looked too long at the sky.

The South swallows its sons. And the sky—the sky just watches.
