The car made a noise when it was cold. Not all the time. Only when the temperature dropped below fifty degrees and the engine had not been running for at least four hours. It was a sound like a cat being stepped on—a brief, high-pitched yelp that lasted approximately two seconds and then stopped, leaving you wondering if you had imagined it.

Tammy had been wondering about the noise for three years. She had taken it to a mechanic once. The mechanic was a man named Earl who operated out of a garage that also sold used tires and lottery tickets. Earl listened to the noise, nodded in the way that mechanics nod when they have decided the answer but are still considering the price, and told Tammy: "It is nothing. It will be nothing until it is something. Then it will be three hundred dollars."

"Three hundred?" Tammy had said. She worked the register at Walmart from six in the morning until two in the afternoon. Three hundred dollars was almost a week's groceries.

"It might be less," Earl said. He was a generous man.

So Tammy lived with the noise. She turned up the radio when it was cold. The radio did not help. The radio played country music and news about the opioid crisis, neither of which masked the noise.
