Zero-Point Calculation

The room was white. The walls, the floor, the ceiling. Everything was white.

Agent 742 sat at the terminal. His job was simple: Audit. He scanned the emotional residues of the population. In the Great Rationality, emotions were treated as noise. Noise caused inefficiency. Inefficiency caused collapse. Therefore, the State deleted the noise.

742 was good at his job. He could identify a flicker of nostalgia or a surge of anger in a millisecond. He would mark the coordinate, and the Eraser would remove the feeling. The citizens became calm. They became productive. They became silent.

On a Thursday, 742 found a fragment. It was a deep-layer residue, buried under three levels of encryption. It wasn't anger or greed. It was a frequency he had never encountered before. He ran a diagnostic.

The system labeled it: [MATERNAL_BOND].

742 didn't know what a "mother" was. The State provided nurseries and nutrient baths. But the fragment was powerful. It was a loop of a voice humming a melody, accompanied by a feeling of absolute safety. For the first time in his life, 742 felt a pressure in his chest. It wasn't a malfunction. It was a resonance.

He didn't report the fragment. Instead, he began to cultivate it. He spent his off-hours feeding the fragment with his own memories, trying to grow the feeling. He wanted to know why this specific noise felt like the only truth in a white room.

As the fragment grew, 742's efficiency dropped. He started to hesitate during audits. He began to see the "noise" in others not as a bug, but as a signal.

One morning, the Chief Auditor entered the room. He didn't speak. He simply pointed to the screen. 742's terminal was glowing with the maternal frequency. It had grown so large that it was leaking into the local network.

"You have introduced a systemic instability," the Chief said. His voice was a flat line.

"It's not instability," 742 replied. "It's a memory."

"Memory is the primary source of inefficiency," the Chief said. "The fragment must be purged. Along with the host."

742 looked at the terminal. He had a choice. He could trigger a global broadcast of the fragment, infecting the entire city with the feeling of being loved. It would destroy the Great Rationality. It would cause chaos, pain, and likely the collapse of the food supply. Or he could let the Eraser take him, and the world would remain white, silent, and perfect.

He looked at the "Broadcast" button. He thought of the humming voice.

He pressed the button.

The room stayed white. But for the first time, the people in the city began to cry.
