The Clockwork Routine (Minimalist Realism)

The factory whistle blew at 6:00 AM. Hans owned the factory, the town, and the air the workers breathed. He was a man of few words and fewer emotions. He operated his life like a machine, and he expected his employees to do the same.

Marta worked in the textile wing. She was efficient, quiet, and invisible. Hans noticed her not because of her skill, but because of her stillness. He liked things that didn't make noise.

The arrangement began on a Tuesday. Hans told Marta that her housing allowance had been revoked. He offered her a new deal: a private room in his own residence, a higher wage, and the requirement that she be available to him at all hours.

Marta agreed. She had no other options.

Their life together was a series of repetitions. 6:00 AM: Whistle. 8:00 AM: Factory floor. 6:00 PM: Return to the residence. 8:00 PM: Dinner in silence. 10:00 PM: The bedroom.

There were no arguments. There were no passionate pleas. There was only the routine. Hans did not hit her, nor did he shout. He simply existed in her space, his presence a constant, low-frequency hum of ownership.

Marta spent her days watching the looms. The rhythmic clack-clack-clack of the machinery became the soundtrack of her life. She began to feel like a part of the machine herself—a gear, a lever, a thread.

One afternoon, Marta found a small, wild flower growing in a crack in the concrete floor of the factory. She stared at it for ten minutes. It was a vivid, unnecessary yellow. She reached down to touch it, but Hans's voice sounded behind her.

"Get back to work, Marta."

She didn't look at him. She simply stepped on the flower, crushing it into the grey concrete, and returned to her loom.

The story ends as it began. The whistle blew at 6:00 AM. Marta woke up, dressed in the clothes Hans had bought her, and walked to the factory. She looked at the spot where the flower had been. There was nothing there but a smudge of yellow stain on the grey floor.

She began to weave. Clack-clack-clack. The routine continued. The machine was functioning perfectly.
