The Butler's Ledger

Entry 412: October 14th. The Master’s son, Sebastian, has once again been seen in the company of the girl, Isabella. It is a tedious affair. Sebastian possesses the romanticism of a wounded deer, while Isabella possesses the ambition of a starving wolf. They believe their affection is a secret. They forget that in this house, the walls have ears, and I am the one who cleans the walls.

Entry 445: November 2nd. The Master has noticed. He did not express anger—anger is for the middle class. Instead, he expressed "concern." He spent the afternoon in his study with a telephone and a series of balance sheets. By evening, he had acquired a controlling interest in Isabella’s father’s shipping firm.

Entry 458: November 10th. The execution was flawless. The Master did not forbid the relationship; he simply made Isabella’s existence in New York an impossibility. He triggered a series of clauses in the shipping contracts that effectively bankrupted Isabella’s family overnight. He then offered her father a "generous" settlement on the condition that Isabella leave the city immediately and never contact Sebastian again.

Entry 462: November 12th. Sebastian is in the library. He is weeping. It is a very loud, very unrefined sort of weeping. I have offered him a brandy, which he ignored. He believes he is experiencing a tragedy. I find it more of a mathematical correction. The Master has already begun arranging a dinner with the Vanderbilt heirs.

Entry 501: January 5th. Sebastian has stopped weeping. He has begun to mimic his father. He speaks now in the same clipped tones, views the staff with the same distant curiosity, and has developed a taste for the same expensive, bitter liqueurs.

Entry 589: June 20th. Sebastian visited the archives today. He asked if I had kept any records of the "incident" with Isabella. I told him that my ledgers are absolute and immutable. He looked at me, and for a moment, I saw a flicker of the old, wounded deer. Then, he smiled—a cold, empty expression that mirrored the Master’s perfectly.

"Burn the entries, Jenkins," he said. "They are no longer relevant to the current asset allocation."

I complied, of course. As I watched the pages curl and blacken in the fireplace, I noted that the cycle was complete. The boy had been successfully pruned. The garden of the Sterling estate remained perfectly manicured, devoid of any unsightly emotions. I closed my ledger and went to prepare the evening tea.
