He'd walk the tracks and stand in the same spot and listen to the pulse, and he'd think about what it meant and what it didn't mean and whether the people who had built it—or the things that had built it—knew that nobody in Youngstown was listening.

    He wondered, sometimes, if the signal was meant for someone else. If it was a message in a bottle thrown into a sea that had no shores, pulsing steadily toward a receiver that might not exist. He wondered if that was better or worse than being ignored.

    The hardware store closed in 2019, when the big-box store on the outskirts of town opened and put all the local businesses out of business. Tommy took his severance and bought a small truck and started driving deliveries for a company that shipped auto parts to towns that were even smaller than Youngstown, in states that Tommy had never visited and probably never would.

    On the nights when he was home, he still walks the tracks. The signal hasn't stopped. It hasn't changed. It just pulses, steady and patient, above the flat weight of a town that nobody remembers and a sky that nobody looks at.

    And Tommy listens, because it's something to do, and doing something is all any of them have ever really had.
