He looked out at the crowd—Italian, Puerto Rican, Caribbean, Chinese, African American, a hundred different faces under a hundred different skies—and he thought about Tony, who had spent his life building ladders for the people behind him, never looking back to see if anyone was climbing.

Marcus was looking back now. He was seeing them all.
