The Long Snow

The snow didn't fall so much as it accumulated, like a slow verdict being read word by word. By the third week of January, Chicago had six feet of packed white on the streets and the temperature had stayed below zero long enough for the river to develop a skin of ice that cracked with sounds like gunshots.

Jack Morrison sat in a booth at the end of O'Malley's bar on South State Street and watched the snow fall through the frosted window. His reflection in the glass was a ghost overlaid on a ghost—himself overlaid on the street, the street overlaid on the snow. He looked tired. He had looked tired for three years.

Three years since the ice on West Madison Avenue. Three years since Mary's car slid into the intersection and the truck came through the red light and the world ended not with a bang but with the sound of metal folding like paper.

Three years since he stopped being a cop and started being a ghost.

The whiskey in his glass was cheap and the bar was empty except for a drunk in the corner and the bartender who had learned not to ask questions. Jack poured another finger and stared at the ice forming on the outside of the glass.

The door opened and cold air rushed in and his sister Carol walked in shaking snow from her coat. She was thirty, sharp-eyed and sharper-tongued, a reporter for the Daily News who wrote about city hall corruption and occasionally about things that kept her up at night.

"You're going to freeze to death in here," she said, sliding into the booth opposite him.

"I'm comfortable," Jack said.

Carol ordered a beer and pushed the menu toward him. "Eat something."

"I'm not hungry."

"You're always not hungry." She took a sip of beer and looked at him properly for the first time. "I got something for you."

Jack didn't respond. He had learned long ago that ignoring Carol usually made her go away. It wasn't working lately.

She slid a photograph across the table. It was a woman, maybe thirty, with dark hair and a snowflake-shaped brooch pinned to her coat collar. The brooch was silver, delicate, shaped like a perfect six-pointed star.

"Who is she?" Jack asked, though he already knew the answer was nothing. He was a detective once, even a broken one. The question was automatic.

"Vanessa Price. Twenty-eight. She disappeared three weeks ago. Last seen leaving her office on State Street after work. Her boyfriend hired a private investigator, the PI came up empty, and the police said she probably ran off."

"The police are usually right."

"Not always." Carol leaned forward. "The boyfriend doesn't believe she ran off. He says she was afraid of something. He says she mentioned someone watching her."

Jack looked at the photograph again. The snowflake brooch caught the light. He felt something in his chest tighten—a muscle he thought had gone dormant was suddenly awake.

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because," Carol said quietly, "I noticed something about the brooch."

Jack looked up.

"I looked it up. It's a custom piece. Handmade. There's only one jeweler in Chicago who makes them, and he only makes one per year. Each one is signed with a tiny number underneath."

Jack's eyes narrowed. "And?"

"And the woman in this photo—Vanessa—her brooch is numbered seven."

The bar was quiet. The drunk in the corner was snoring. The bartender was wiping a glass. Outside, the snow kept falling.

"Seven," Jack said.

Carol nodded. "I looked into it. Over the past three years, seven women have disappeared in Chicago during the winter months. All of them between November and March. All of them between twenty-five and thirty-five. And all of them"—she tapped the photograph—"wore a snowflake brooch."

Jack felt the whiskey hit his stomach like a stone. "Three years," he said. "That's the winter Mary died."

Carol's face went very still. "You think they're connected?"

"I think nothing is connected. But I'm going to look anyway."

He stood up, left a five-dollar bill on the table, and walked out into the snow.

The jeweler was a small shop on North Michigan Avenue called Whitmore & Son, though there was no son visible and the Whitmore who ran it was a thin, nervous man with shaking hands. He recognized the photograph immediately.

"Vanessa Price," he said. "Yes. She came in last October. Commissioned a brooch. Custom order. Said it was a gift for someone special."

"Who was she?" Jack asked. "Did she mention anyone? Any name?"

Whitmore wrung his hands. "She was very private. Said it was a surprise. Paid in cash. I don't know anything else."

"What's the number on the bottom?"

"Seven. I remember because it was the last one I made that year. I stopped making them after that."

"Why?"

Whitmore looked toward the door, as if checking whether someone was listening. "Because the woman who commissioned them—she wasn't commissioning them for friends. She was commissioning them for victims."

Jack felt the cold inside him, the kind that had nothing to do with the weather. "Explain."

Whitmore lowered his voice. "About two years ago, a woman came into my shop. She was elegant, cold-looking, with pale skin and dark eyes. She showed me a brooch—exactly like the one in your photograph—and she told me to make twelve of them. She said they were for a collection. She paid me double."

"Twelve?"

"She took seven. Said the rest would come later. But they never did. And then—about six months later—she came back. She wanted to know if I'd sold any more snowflake brooches. I told her no, I'd only made seven. She looked at me for a long time and then she said, 'Good. Seven is a complete set.'"

"Then she left?"

"She left. And I never saw her again. Until Vanessa came. Vanessa didn't know about the other woman. She just wanted a pretty brooch for a pretty price. She had no idea what she was wearing."

Jack walked out of the shop into the snow and stood on the sidewalk for a long time, thinking. Seven women. Seven brooches. Seven winters. Three years.

He went back to O'Malley's and dug through his old police files, the ones he kept in a cardboard box under his bed because he couldn't throw them away and couldn't look at them. He found the report from the winter of 1943—the winter Mary died.

A blizzard. December 14th. A car accident on West Madison. A young couple, Mary and Jack Morrison—no, wait. Mary and Robert Morrison. Robert had survived. Mary had not.

He had always thought it was an accident. Ice on the road. A truck running a red light. That was the official story.

But now he was looking at it differently. Through the lens of seven missing women. Through the lens of snowflake brooches.

He pulled out a map of Chicago and pinned it to his wall. He marked the seven disappearances with red pins. They formed a pattern—not a circle, not a line, but a spiral, converging on a single point in the old South Side, near the abandoned railroad yards.

The eighth pin was empty. The eighth pin was where Vanessa had last been seen.

Jack put on his coat and his hat and walked out into the snow. He didn't know what he was looking for. He knew he would find it eventually. The snow was falling and the city was white and silent and he was moving through it like a man walking through his own autopsy.

The abandoned railroad yards were a maze of rusted tracks and collapsed warehouses and snowdrifts that reached waist-high. Jack moved through them with a flashlight and a .38 revolver he hadn't fired in three years. His hands were steady. His breathing was controlled. He was a detective again, even if nobody else knew it.

The spiral pattern led him to a small brick building half-buried in snow—a signal station, probably from the 1920s, with a flat roof and narrow windows. The door was locked, but the lock was old and the wood around it was rotting, and Jack kicked it once and the door gave.

Inside, the air was cold and still. The flashlight beam cut through dust and darkness and revealed a narrow corridor leading down into the earth. Jack descended.

The basement was a single large room, lit by a single bare bulb that flickered on as he entered—wired to a motion sensor, someone had thought of that. The room was filled with filing cabinets, old and rusted, and a long table with seven chairs.

On the table was a ledger. Jack opened it and read the entries:

December 1943: Robert and Mary Morrison. Accident.
March 1944: Helen Park. Accident.
November 1944: Margaret Sullivan. Accident.
June 1945: Dorothy Chen. Accident.
January 1946: Patricia O'Brien. Accident.
September 1946: Rosa Martinez. Accident.
April 1947: Vanessa Price. Missing.

Seven names. Seven accidents. Seven snowflakes.

Jack's hands were shaking now. He turned the page and found a handwritten note:

"The snow covers everything. The snow forgets nothing. The snow is the only truth."

Footsteps behind him. Jack spun around, raising the .38.

A man stood in the doorway. Tall, grey-haired, wearing a long coat. Jack recognized him immediately—Captain Harold Voss, his former commanding officer. The man who had signed Jack's retirement papers. The man who had patted him on the shoulder and told him to "find something else to do with his life."

"Jack," Voss said calmly. "I wondered when you'd figure it out."

Jack's finger rested on the trigger. "You're the one. The snowflake brooches. The accidents. All of it."

Voss nodded. "Seven winters. Seven winters and seven lives. It's a lot to carry, Jack. But someone has to carry it."

"Why?" Jack's voice was low and flat, like a blade on stone.

"Because the world is unfair," Voss said simply. "People die for no reason. Cars skid on ice. Trucks run red lights. And the people who survive—they carry it. They carry it until it eats them alive. I decided to even the score."

Jack felt something cold and hard form in his chest. Not anger. Not grief. Something older than both.

"You killed seven people."

"I balanced the scales. Seven good people who died for no reason. Seven bad people who deserved it. I didn't keep track of which was which. I just kept track of the snow."

Jack raised the revolver. Voss didn't move.

The gunshot was loud in the small room. Voss fell against the filing cabinet and slid to the floor. Jack stood over him for a long time, listening to the sound of snow falling above them, muffled and distant.

He found Vanessa in a locked room at the back of the basement. She was alive but unconscious, bound and gagged. He cut her free and carried her up the stairs and into the snow.

She woke up three hours later in Carol's apartment, wrapped in blankets and drinking hot coffee. She didn't remember much—only walking home from work, only a hand on her shoulder, only the smell of cold air and old paper.

"The brooch," she said. "The snowflake brooch."

Jack looked at her collar. The brooch was gone.

"I took it," he said. "It's not safe."

He went back to the basement once more, after Vanessa was safe, after Carol was asleep, after the city had gone quiet. He opened the ledger and took out the page with the seven names and seven dates and one note about snow. He held it over the kitchen sink and lit it with a match.

The paper curled and blackened and turned to ash. The snow kept falling outside. The river kept cracking. The city kept turning, indifferent and white and full of secrets.

Jack Morrison never became a detective again. He never became anything else, really. He still drank too much and talked to photographs and remembered Mary every single day.

But he also remembered the eight women. The seven who were gone and the one who came back. He remembered that the snow covers everything, but the snow also remembers.

And some winters, when the temperature drops below zero and the lake turns to ice and the city goes quiet beneath a blanket of white, Jack walks to the cemetery and stands at Mary's grave and tells her about the snow.

He tells her it's still falling. He tells her it always will be.
